My Nursing Philosophy
Elaborate on your beliefs of the philosophy of nursing including your vision for yourself as a nurse and how has this philosophy changed (or not changed) during your career. How does your philosophy affect how you care for your patients and how you interact with your fellow health care professionals? Describe ways that you use Nightingale’s philosophy and contributions to nursing in your current nursing practice.

Although most patients seen in this setting are not sickly, the environment of the delivery room including family and support partners can be a cause of unnecessary distress for the patient. As a labor and delivery nurse I have on many occasions surveyed the environment of my patient and asked myself what can I do to improve this situation for my patient. At times it may be the suggestion for visitors to go and get themselves something to eat, or encouraging the over zealous family member to head off to the waiting room for some much needed rest before the big event. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the conscientious and judicious use of current best evidence in conjunction with clinical expertise and patient values to guide health care decisions. (Hughes 2008) Nurses are involved in incorporating evidence into their nursing practice in their day-to-day nursing care. Simply avoiding infection through evidence-based practice of hand hygiene is seen within my unit, hand sanitizers are strategically placed outside patient care areas and individual rooms. This practice of ensuring hand hygiene among staff nurses and encouragement through educating both patients and health professionals has seen a decrease in infection rates within the hospital setting
