My National History Day Project On Shinto
The first ESLR I have grown in is “Be Prepared for College”. For my AP Human Geography class this year, I did a lot of work for the National History Day Project. I am doing my National History Day Project on Shinto. First, I had to research on my topic, and make sure I understood all of my historical facts. I had certain requirements in writing my research paper. The paper had to be between 1500 and 2500 words, and had to be a collection of historical facts. In order to start and continue on with this project, I had to conduct extensive research, helping me grow in knowledge as well. This has helped me be prepared for college a lot. Not only am I getting experience writing an official paper, but I am practicing writing a paper with a long

Finally, the Shinto religion is quite concerned with the idea of balance. This usually results in a concern for the balance between humans and the natural world. In Miyazaki's films, there is also a lot of emphasis placed on balance. In fact, his protagonists often undertake a voyage of balance, either between humans and nature such as in Princess Mononoke, or within themselves like in Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. Princess Mononoke makes peace with the humans rather than yielding to them, as that would mean the humans gained dominance over nature. In Spirited Away, we see that she balances her own behavior. As she was very childish prior to entering the spirit realm, we see her mature as Sen and she no longer hangs on her…

Marian Anderson was born on February 27th, 1897. She was the oldest of three sisters. Marian Anderson revealed her vocal talent as a child, but her family could not afford to pay for formal training. So her parents decided it was best to let her join the choir at the Union Baptist Church at the age of six. Then at the age of 13, Marian joined the senior choir. Within that time period Marian was also focused on attending her local high school until she was then notified that she was rejected because she was an African American. So Marian decided that it was best for her to attend the music high school that was located in Pennsylvania .Members of her church congregation raised funds for her to attend the music school for a year. As Marian impressed everyone with her talented voice her father decided it was best to surprise her with a piano that then meant so much to her. Mainly because she knew her parents couldn’t afford to pay for professional lessons so she decided to learn on her own. Furthermore, Marian Anderson commitment to her music and her choice as a singer very well impressed the rest of her choir the Union Baptist Church. They then gathered together and raised enough money, about $500, to pay for Anderson to train under Giuseppe Boghetti, a respected voice teacher. During her two years of studying with Boghetti, Anderson won a chance to sing at the Lewiston Stadium in New York after entering a contest organized by the New York Philharmonic Society. Other opportunities soon followed. In 1928 she performed at Carnegie Hall for the first time, and eventually she was then on tour around the world performing. Much of Marian’s life would eventually see her breaking down obstacles for an African-American performer. For example, in 1955 she became the first African-American singer to perform as a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Although Marian Anderson was…

There was so much information to learn in Introduction to University Writing, it is hard for me to say what was the most important to me. Unit 1, Good Writers are Made Not Born refreshed me on the basics of writing with common misspelled words, punctuation basics , verb tenses and plurals (Chambers, 2015). I really needed this refresher on the basics of writing or the consequences might have been disastrous the farther I got into my college career. The next thing that helped me out immensely was when we worked with APA and how we learned to use the “cite” tool on EBSCO, along with using the website www. Bibme.org to make sure we use the right APA format to reference our sources. I also felt that it was very important that my facilitator recommended her students to look for an outside source, such as the Smarthinking lab or www.paperrater.com to review our writings before our final submission.…

At the beginning of the year it felt like I would have never been able to write any paper that was more than two pages long, it just seemed impossible, but for the research paper I actually had to stop myself from going off and writing a twelve page paper. I will admit and say that English is not my strong suit, in fact it is probably one of my more difficult classes. But just because it is difficult does not mean I don’t like it. I like looking for topics that interest me and still fit in with the guidelines, I like getting involved in the paper and researching the topic until it feels like my head is about to explode. I never saw any of that coming, I thought that I was going to have to go through English and just pray…

I am loving my time on the beautiful and mountainous island chain of Japan. The close proximity to China is very visible in the government and religion of this island. Peering into Zen Gardens, you can see people peacefully meditating attempting to achieve enlightenment in their calm meditation. If it was not for the Chinese, Zen Buddhism certainly would not be worshiping in this manner.Nonetheless, there are still some people practicing Shintoism. Tensions are slightly high with the increasing presence of Buddhism and there are battles beginning to brew between the peasants and the newly formed central…

I never thought I’d be able to experience a college level course in high school and pass it with an above average grade, more than a “C”. It wasn’t easy though, the journey I’ve made from semester to semester has been a slow one and required more than half my effort and time. I’ve definitely grown not only as a writer but as a student overall through completion of several term papers and activities. As I reflect on this school year, I am thankful for enrolling and for the experience SUPA History has given me. The materials and objectives of SUPA History has given me the confidence to feel capable of meeting college standards upon my arrival to a university.…

    My Senior Activism

But I made sure that I chose a topic that I am passionate about and so went with the Higher Education for Undocumented students, which mainly focused on the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM Act) I knew that I would write more about something that I deeply care about and wanted to make a difference and was an issue that I had been working on since my Sophomore year. I had volunteered with organizations that helped undocumented immigrants and students. When my writing process began I remember freezing. I went blank and did not know what to start with. I had all my research and activism with me. I even had quotes and experiences from undocumented students that I wanted to add to my paper, but somehow I did not know what to write. My civics teacher noticed that I had been putting off my writing and she called me up in class. When I sat with her we chatted about my research and she had seen all the work that I did on the issue and was surprised that I did not know how I start my paper. I told her that writing is not my strong suit and I was scared that I would not graduate. She said that I should not worry about my writing. Her advice was to just start writing about what I cared about and that there is a reason why I choose I chose my topic and should focus on that and not on the actual writing itself. Her advice helped me because I realized that worrying about my writing was dragging me down and that I was missing the point of the Activism project. I then started to write about my issue and I did not let my writing put me down. I focused more on my topic and what I did for my activism. By not obsessing about my writing I was able to finish my first draft n one week and for the rest of the year, I worked on getting feedback and editing. What I learned from this experience was that…

This year in college Studies I focused on the Critical Thinking subjects of Ethical Issues and Communication. Focusing on Ethical Issues and Social Responsibilities forced me to think of the issues at stake in the America and world, also what the consequences of my actions are on society. In order to reflect my learning of this subject I chose two papers which I used as my reflection essay for end of the semester. The first one is titled “Human Rights”. It forced me to look at the history of human rights and how they have been abused in the past or how they might be getting abused today. The second paper I chose to represent Ethical Issues and Social Responsibilities is titled “Power of Communication”. This semester forced me to do tons of research using books from Mesa College, UCSD and SDSU libraries, Journals, Magazines, and the internet. I learned a great deal from researching and writing.…
