My Narrative Analysis
There are things I do well and things I don’t. This year I wrote two different narratives, and I want to see if my writing has improved over time and look at the things I need to work on. My Narrative 2 was about being inducted into N.J.H.S. and what that experience was like. My Vocabu-Lit narrative was about my brother, my dad and I going to Miami for the weekend. There are a few things that I definitely need to improve, but some things I still do the same.
In my narrative from the beginning of the school year, I did use some figurative language throughout the paper. An example is the simile “My face lights up like a Christmas tree…” I was describing how happy I was about a particular event. I also used metaphors. In my Vocabu-Lit narrative,

In both papers, the ending didn’t clearly tie back to my hook. In the Vocabu-Lit essay, my hook was “I waited impatiently at the door…”, yet the ending talked about my how great my story would be when I got home. They don’t really connect. Neither does the hook and the ending in my Narrative 2. I think I should focus on this part of the essay next time I write. One more thing I noticed was verb tense in my writing. I tend to have varying verb tenses in my writing. Then I forget to fix them while proofreading. In the Narrative 2, I only had a few verb tense mistakes. And then in my Vocabu-Lit essay, I had many more verb tense errors. Throughout my whole paper, I used present tense and past tense. I realize that this a problem I need to work to improve. Everyone has different skills and weaknesses. I learned that I don’t have consistent verb tense and my hook and endings don’t tie together. My goals for the rest of this year are to go back through my paper after I’ve finished and look for any errors. Especially verb tense mistakes. I also want to tie my hooks back to my conclusions, which will really connect my whole essay together. There were some things I don’t do very well, but I really want to improve on

I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. Initially, I read the first paper I wrote for the Quarter 1 Writing Assessment and I noticed that I didn’t follow the directions completely. As I read on, there were many simple sentences and not many transitional words.…

Throughout the year, my writing has had significant improvements, compared to where I began. First, I began this semester fairly confident in my writing abilities. I thought that I had a strong grasp on writing concepts that include: transition words, literary devices, proper grammar techniques, correct paper writing format. In contrast, I felt that I began the year with a weak vocabulary, which has always been one of my weaker areas, If I were to rank myself on day one of class, without knowing all of the material we were going to cover, I would rank my writing skills an eight out of ten.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…
