This is accomplished by combining service tasks with structured opportunities that link the task to self-reflection, self-discovery, and the acquisition and comprehension of values, skills, and knowledge content. For example, if school students collect trash out of an urban stream, they are providing a service to the community as volunteers; a service that is highly valued and important. When school students collect trash from an urban stream, then analyze what they found and possible sources so they can share the results with residents of the neighborhood along with suggestions for reducing pollution, they are engaging in service-learning. In the service-learning example, the students are providing an important service to the community and, at the same time, learning about water quality and laboratory analysis, developing an understanding of pollution issues, learning to interpret science issues to the public, and practicing communications skills by speaking to residents. They may also reflect on their personal and career interests in science, the environment, public policy or other related areas. Thus, we see that service-learning combines service with learning in intentional ways. There are many other illustrations of how the combination is transforming to both community and students. This is not to say…

I interviewed Daniel Nelson who is a senior psychology major in the research track. The psychology specific experiences he has so far in school was one over the summer which was with marriage works in Dayton, Ohio. He also worked with the domestic violence division which was a really cool experience for him because he was able to see both sides of the abuser and abuse and was able to give presentations to them on the topic of domestic violence and overall it was a good personal experience for him because he has family that has gone through domestic violence and he was able to come to grips with this reality through the internship. Ways he has changed as a student was in him becoming a lot more humble. Social psychology which is a field interesting to him, has been an eye opener experience for him because you’re so influenced by your behaviors and environment that most of his beliefs which include that he was so lucky in life and that he was in the perfect little environment that had all the answers and ended up realizing it wasn’t the case it became a huge thing to come across and in turn changed him to having a much more different perspective of himself. Things he has learned in being successful as a college student is doing everything you can and opening up as many doors as possible because most of a person’s best opportunities come unexpectedly. Two out of three of his internships came through connections and he never expected to get them, and he didn’t even have to apply to either of them and in general an aspect that he keeps in mind is that he doesn’t want to look back and say well I should have done this and that you as a student can never do too much. Daniels initial plans is to go to law school but down the road when he gets older he wants to pursue a PhD in social psychology or something related to that, or political psychology or political behavior. Overall he wants to pursue a particular field that involves examining…

The applied experience courses for my major in Psychology and minor in Sociology equipped me with the framework necessary to recognize and competently address societal issues, from both a psychological and sociological perspective. The applied experience courses and the theoretical perspectives learned provided me the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to members in my community by decreasing the frequency of the adverse effects people endured. These courses served as the conduit for me to attain volunteer employment with the Kern County Mental Health Crisis Hotline. I was able to integrate a broad range of theoretical perspectives and methodologies gained from my undergraduate course…
