"Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes." – Peter Druker

Two years ago, I had an experience with a leader that profoundly shaped the rest of my life. I decided to switch my career into marketing stream from sales & the invitation came to join Finlays Tea Estates. Just few weeks after my initial discussion, I met the Chairman of the organization and after a brief introduction to the organization he said. "I think you could head our marketing wing. If you decide to join us I want you to be in full control of the estate operations with regard to manufacture & you'll be telling them what to manufacture, the standards they should maintain, grade percentages...etc." I was shocked. Who was I to tell the superintendents who were in the planting industry for last two to three decades or may be even more? Sensing my doubt, he simply looked me in the eye and said, "I have great confidence in you. You can do this. I will give you the insights to the organization which will help you to do your job and built the understanding / trust among estate management."

His confidence, his ability to see more in me than I saw in myself, his willingness to entrust me with the responsibility that would stretch me to my potential unlocked something inside me. I accepted the assignment and gave my best. It trapped me physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. I grew within a very short span of time. I saw others grow too. I saw patterns in basic leadership principles. I found my "voice" And it was my leader that inspired me to find it & it was Mr. Naresh Ratwatte who is the Chairman/Managing Director of Finlays Tea Estates – Sri Lanka.

I realised in time that I wasn't the only one he treated this way. His affirmation, his ability to unite us in vision towards our work

In 1983 Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner began a research project on the study of leadership. They wanted to survey leaders throughout the world to find out what actions these leaders took that brought them success. They wanted to hear the very best leadership stories these leaders could remember when asked to tell about them.. These leaders surveyed were from all walks of life, some were first line supervisors, others were top level CEO's, and some were mid level management. Kouzes and Posner surveyed literally thousands of leaders over a number of years and they were able to identify that when leaders were doing their best work they all had several common factors working for them. When these leaders were doing their very best they were practicing what Kouzes and Posner came to call the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership (p.13). These practices can be used by anyone who wants to be a leader and if used properly these practices can help a leader be successful and foster great improvement within their organization.…

    Leadership Interview Paper

I interviewed Becky Hendrix, Executive Director for Professional Care Services. I recently had the honor of interviewing someone in our community who has had more than twenty years of leadership experience in our community. The interview ended up taking much longer than I expected because I was so influenced by what she had to say, I did not want to miss anything. Mrs. Becky Hendrix started her career as a CPA back in the 80 's for the World Color Press. Her leadership abilities were quickly realized, and she was promoted to head CPA. From there she moved on to the Professional Care Service where she remained for fifteen years serving as a CPA, and finally working her way up to the Executive Director. Becky was in charge of over 187 employees. My conversation with Becky took a direction that I did not expect. She attributes her success to the leadership traits that she has learned over the years, and quoted many of the very ideas and theories almost verbatim from our class lecture. That was an incredible experience to witness firsthand how these traits become behaviors and practices.…

    My Worst Leader

There are many factors that can make someone a poor leader. The worst leader I ever had was my boss at the insurance company I worked for last year. My boss played favorites, did not do her work, micromanaged, lacked human skills, and recorded everything wrong that someone had ever done. All of these factors are what made her the worst leader I have ever had in my life. The first reason my boss was the worst leader I ever had was because she played favorites.…
