My Journey To Guatemala
Culture has always been important part of my life. I am a first generation American; my father is a Greek immigrant and all of my mother’s family was born in Greece. Learning about my family’s history and visiting their homes in Greece has given me a worldly perspective. I want to travel to Guatemala to not only learn the language, but also fully immerse myself in the culture and create life long relationships. My friendships, family and connecting with new people are all special to me. I feel comfortable talking to anybody and value sharing my cultural experiences with those I meet. I have traveled to numerous foreign places such as Greece, Mexico, London, and the Bahamas. I am grateful to have had these opportunities to travel. My passion …show more content…
The opportunity to speak Spanish everyday with native speakers, live in their homes, and learn about their culture first hand will be more beneficial for me than a traditional classroom experience. Traditional Spanish courses are often structured for students to learn and then memorize. This has never been a skill of mine, especially with a restricted time frame. The opportunity to deeply engage myself in the culture of Guatemala is a more constructive learning environment for me.
One challenge I may face while in Guatemala is my minimal Spanish background. My lack of background will make it difficult for me to communicate in the beginning of my course. I am eager to learn and hope that this will no longer be a challenge for me when I am done with my course in Guatemala.
In the future, I plan to attend nursing school and work in a children’s hospital in Chicago, my hometown. While working in a large, diverse city the skills that I acquire in Guatemala will help me communicate and relate to the Spanish speaking community. Although I will not become fluent in Spanish, I will acquire the skills needed for basic communication with Spanish speakers in

On the way home, we stopped at a Cracker Barrel for breakfast. During our meal, we got a call from my aunt telling us that my uncle, my mother’s brother, was in the hospital. Only a few days before he had moved back to Guatemala without saying goodbye to me. Once we were back on the road, my mother continued to get phone calls updating us about what was happening down there, as each call came through we all became more and more anxious wait for the answer. Then it came it just wasn't the answer we were hoping for, my mother began pushing on the walls of the car as if they were…

Driving through Guatemala and talking to locals in Guatemala opened my eyes to the agriculture. Mostly everything that I saw was similar to the information that I found during the research in my presentation. But seeing what I learned about opened my eyes to the what the country of Guatemala was dealing with. Thought my time while driving through Guatemala I began to discover many interesting things about Guatemala. I noticed that all the farming fields seemed to take over the landscape. It seemed that there were just farming areas nestled in every which corner on the side of the mountains. I thought what happened to all the trees. It seemed that they had all been cut down. While in Guatemala I learned that many of the families that own the…

Learning another language has definitely expanded and enriched my view of the world. Recently, I have gotten the opportunity to see the differences between two cultures and get a real life experience. Therefore, I am able to compare foods, architecture, and the Spanish language between two interesting Latin American countries. Even though they both have the same Latin foods, the tastes are so uniquely different. I never knew how different rice and beans could taste until I visited Puerto Rico. The ingredients put into the dish gave it its own individuality. The architecture is different, yet amazing in both countries. Going to the Mayan ruins in Mexico and then to Caparra ruins in Puerto Rico is incredibly fascinating. In addition, they speak…

For my clinical experience today I shadowed an RN, at the Ashe County Health Department. The RN was participating in the flu clinic today. She administered many flu vaccinations. Most of the individuals that came in today for the clinic were over the age of 65 and were given the high dose flu vaccination. The RN also worked with a Spanish interpreter during several visits throughout the day. She would first assess a Spanish speaking individual’s ability to speak English, then if deemed necessary she would call for the interpreter. The nurse made sure to always direct her questions, and maintain eye contact with the patient. She wanted them to feel included, and really engage them through therapeutic communication, even though she did not speak…
