My Improvement In English 101
English Improvement I walked into English 101 head high, and confident in my abilities to write a very well structured and put-together essay. Scoring was very high on my English portion on the ACT left me with confidence and an enthusiasm for my soon to be English class’s. Boy was I never so stuck; this class was difficult, very difficult I was given the ol’e one two, I was out. You’re everywhere, you have no clear topic, and you ramble on too much. Those are a few of the very common problems I’m told I have. I believed I had finally corrected myself of the errors of my way, but to my disregard I had not. I still had a long ways to go. The hardest part about my English 101 was not the contexts but the time. I had decided to take the class at 8am, this and the fact that I screwed around my first two months of college really set me up for failure. I did not show up for class on a regular schedule and even when I did show up I slacked off, once again setting myself up to fail. Two months in I changed roommates, along with changing roommates I changed my priorities: school, work, study, and then my own pleasures. That was the turning point one I was hoping I would be able to get myself out of. I’m not saying it was easy or that I no longer had any late night 3am assignments that I turned in, what I am saying was …show more content…
I have written this essay to show my improvement in English, but not only English but also in life. While writing essays and doing assignment are something you may not do everyday in your life, the life lessons of discipline and achieving a goal you set no matter what it takes is. English may not always have the hardest work or quickest, something you can always count on it to make you calm down and think about what you are writing, why you are writing it, and provide a good background on the subject so it can be fully

The following are three essays that I worked on during the semester. Most of it remains the same, while some of my ideas have developed. The only major changes made were redirecting the ideas in the Where is Waldo Now essay. In English 1102 I struggled with a lot, Professor Grant really challenged what I thought I knew about writing. Being that English is my second language, language barriers normally do not reflect in my speech or writing. I felt that this semester really showed me that I still had work to do. Passive voice, comma slices, forming arguments, and grammar are some of the many skills that I worked on during this semester. I attended the Writing Center as often as I could; I also asked questions during office hours. I worked on perfecting these skills in my other classes as well by reading out loud. By exploring these different options my essay grades improved 15 points. Hopefully my portfolio and future papers reflects the time and practice I’ve put into my writing.…

My first semester here at UIC I was obligated to take English 160. I can honestly say I thought I would be easily passing this course. I was used to the 5 paragraph essay in high school and assumed that things would be the same in college. After writing my first project for English 160 I felt invincible until I received my graded paper. I had no idea what I had done wrong because I had done so well in high school English. Finally I realized that I had to pick one theme for an entire paper and elaborate on it completely. Even though it took some time I felt…

This story starts with the narrator telling us how he is not mad, merely nervous, but not crazy. In this story he explains that he loves and takes care of this old man. He devises a plan to be free of the eye, the narrator goes to the old man's room every night at 12am, for seven days. On the eighth night, he went into the bedroom, then quickly drags the old man, off the bed, and then pulls the bed on top of the man. The narrator then waits till he hears the old man’s heart stop. English 101 has been an amazing class and I feel like I have grown more than I expected. I was apprehensive about taking an English class because I have been away from school for almost seventeen years. I have not written an essay since 1996 and I knew many things have changed. I was especially concerned with citations. However, I found myself being able to work though citations with little effort.…

I have attended Argosy University Online since March 21, 2013 to Present. I was a Fulltime student. I'm currently taking my last course with them which is ENG 102. I enjoy taking my classes online. I feel as it is just like sitting in the classroom. When I logon to my class portal everything is there. Currently at Argosy the terms are 5 weeks long. So when I log on I have 5 modules that are one week a piece and have 3 assignments on each module. I participate in a discussion that the instructor puts out and I have to respond to the discussion post and also having to reply to two classmates on their discussion post every week. When assignments are due requiring the use of a text book I navigate under the module that the assignment is due and click on the require text that pertains to the assignment and the text is there from the book. When a writing assignment is due, I normally type the paper in Microsoft word and attach the document into the drop box on Argosy University's student portal and click the drop down box and click which assignment I’m submitting and submit it for grading. If I’m not too much in a hurry I will wait about ten minutes to see what my Turnitin score is. If I have any questions for the professor at any time I go to the left hand side where the modules are and click “Questions for the Professor” and ask my question. If it’s something personal in nature I will send the professor an email.…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…

My former English professor would always say “find a way 101”, whenever a student found themselves struggling in her class. At first I did not understand why she was so rude to her students, this was until after I graduated high school when I realized I was wrong. She was not rude, she was not mean, she was preparing her students for college level English classes. Reflecting on my past encounter with the toughest teacher at my former high school, I can say I feel prepared for a college level class. Although I may have taken the most rigorous class in high school, that does not mean I am expected to pass without falling short. However, I am certain that I am ready for the challenges that my professor will assign me in the fall.…
