My Hero Narrative
Who’s your hero? Is it police officers, firefighters, or even a family member? Growing up, there was absolutely no one I admired more than my dad, he was my hero, my best friend, the ultimate supporter, and my whole world. Everyday it was my dad and I, taking care of the farm, riding horse, and just have always been with him. For a long time, my dad would have spells that he would be on the floor, in so much pain it took all his willpower not to show us how bad he was hurting, after a few years of this, and 3 times of us moving houses, my mom gave him no option but to go to the doctor. After careful examination, we got terrible news, because his tumor was noticed.
Many tests, and many a hospital stay later, came the surgery.... we were told to wait in a large room, smelling way too strongly of disinfectant and the smell of stale air that has been circling in the same, multi-level building, way too long. We wordlessly sat there, and waited, then waited some more, reading books, playing with my mom's phone, and trying to sleep, for what seemed like forever. Our whole family was there, back then, My innocent self thought it was fun because it wasn’t very often my whole family was

On good days, we would get out for a walk, on average days, I would pull up the ATV and we would just take a drive, as he was not allowed to drive with his medications, and on bad, I had to play nurse, bringing his medications, holding his hand, and dealing with all the side effects of the medications, and slowly watch my dad, start to wither away. As the summer rolled on, the bad days became average, and the okay days became good, they just continued to grow

I remember that October day so perfectly. I got out of class, called my Aunt Gwen for directions to the hospital he was at, and went on my way. I arrived at the hospital just as my grandpa was slowly making his way down the hallway with his oxygen and with my aunt right by his side. I look at her face and I can tell she is trying to hold back tears. My Uncle Jacky was there too which is my grandpas oldest son. After the doctors we went to Ryan’s restaurant and ate lunch, its where he always ate with my grandma when she had to go to the doctors. Now my grandpa is a big guy and watching him barely eat that day was terribly hard. I could barely look at him for I was trying to hold back all my tears with everything I had. From that day on I knew my grandpa’s life wouldn’t be the same. The doctors said they would be able to cure him, the cancer had spread to his fluids. My grandpa has been doing chemo therapy to just slow the cancer down and sadly he has to come to his last treatment.…

Every story needs a hero, right? For centuries authors and poets have included this essential character into their work. Without knowing literature has been seldom following the same archetype, The Hero’s Journey. Joseph Campbell discovered that most stories follow this pattern which is why he dubbed it the monomyth. Through years of studying he found that this popular motif is made up of ten basic steps that a hero follows through a story. Well known film writer and director George Lucas molded the film Star Wars around Campbell’s monomyth not only with intent but quite distinctively. Lucas is not the only one doing this in Hollywood either, many screenwriters and directors have caught on to this including Andrew Stanton as he depicted his version of the monomyth in Finding Nemo. This animated film follows the archetype laid out in Joseph Campbell’s, The Hero With a Thousand Faces.…

Western and nonwestern heroes come from different regions of the world; therefore, have different cultural backgrounds. More specifically, western heroes come from the Greco-Roman or Judeo-Christian traditions. Nonwestern heroes come from other parts of the world that would not associate with these traditions. While these heroes might seem to have little in common when it comes to origin, “The Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell demonstrates that all heroes have “similar patterns” (Campbell). However by examining the non-western hero, Mulan, in “The Ballad of Mulan” demonstrates how this figure is different than the hero outlined in Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey” in the following ways, Mulan does not have any kind of “supernatural aid”, “tests that lead to the final showdown”, or a “life-changing experience for her or many others” (Campbell).…

Tom wondered for what seemed to be the millionth time why Dectives were required to dress like wall-street bankers or stock analysts. At least that was the expectation in public, however the moment he had the office to himself, he unknotted his tie, slipped off the linen suit jacket, and undid the top button of his shirt, then sat back in his chair, raised his eyes to the ceiling, and tapped the tip of a ballpoint pen against his teeth. That was Tom's usual mode of concentration and contemplation, and so intent was the man's focus on the new case that all else slipped from his mind, even the recollection that he'd texted his wife. Therefore, the sudden familiar sound of her voice, accompanied by the enticing aroma of barbecue, startled him, and he immediately shot upright. The sight of Lila elicited a smile that only widened with the greeting and kiss. "Sorry baby."…

Everyone has a different definition of a hero. Mine is a person who has impacted my life, or lives in general. They are selfless and genuine people who care about others more than themselves. A hero has no gender, size, or age. Anyone is capable of being a hero, but it’s very rare to find someone who possesses all of the qualities. People like a war veteran, a public figure, or an everyday person are all people who fit my definition of a hero. Irena Sendler, Tyler Joseph, and my mom are prime examples of what I think a hero is and should…

We chatted with the nurses and checked up on his seemingly slow recovery. I just wanted my grandpa back. I started thinking about how many kids around the world don't even have parents and would be considered very lucky to have a grandma or a grandpa. I realized that my family was not going to be here forever and I should not take them for granted. My brain raced with thoughts of regret. I silently wished that I could redo my past, and be more thankful for everything everybody has done for me. I blinked away tears, thinking about how selfish I was and how selfless I needed to be.…
