My First Surgery
My First Surgery
It was December 2012 when I had my first surgery. It started on the night when my head felt very heavy. It was very worrying, I checked my body’s temperature and the result said that I was having a fever. It was fine at first, but the fever was getting worse and still going until I fell asleep.

The next day, me and my parents decided to go to the hospital. We went to an internist and then he suggested us to do a radiology examination. When all data were gathered, the doctor concluded that I have a chronic appendicitis and they have to take it out quickly before it gets worse. After hearing that, my parents then booked a room in the 3rd floor of the hospital.

I stayed in the room for few days, we have done all of the preparation. It all went well until the day before the surgery. An obstetrician came to my room to perform an ultrasonography because he said there were other strange things beside the appendicitis that I had. Unexpectedly, the result told us that I also have two ovarian cysts, each sized 6 and 8 centimeter. At the end, it was all set that the doctors are going to perform two surgeries at the same time, which was laparoscopic appendectomy and laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy.

Long story short, days have gone, the surgery have been performed. Me and my family were very relieved. Roughly, the surgery took 3 hours and requires 4 doctors to do it. The result was very satisfying, the scars are only 0,5cm each and also there was no pain at all.

Now, I’m still recovering. I’m still seeing the doctor for check ups and I still can’t do activities that requires more hard work than the usual. Maybe it wasn’t a very nice experience at all, but I’m glad that now it’s over before it got even worse.

The doctors put tubes all around me and I couldn’t move for a while. I had many x-rays done to find out what was the cause of it. Luckily for me they didn’t find anything that showed signs of danger. But either way it was hard for me. I learned to live with it and to not think of it as a bad thing because yes, having lupus is bad, but at least it’s not another disease that can really do harm to me. I look at how my life is now and I see that it isn’t as bad as what I put it to be when was I younger. I learned to live with it and to continue with my life, not letting anything stop me from doing the things that I want to do in my life. Early that morning my parents took us to the bus station. The bus was leaving at 6 a.m. in the morning to get to Austin, TX at midnight. My daughter and I felt it was the longest drive ever as the bus was very full and kept stopping. Finally, we arrived to Austin at midnight. I had to walk around for some time until I found a cab to take us to the hotel. I was scared and nervous. I was all alone with my daughter in a city we didn't know. We arrived to the hotel and finally felt safe and some peace. As soon as we walked in the room, I called my family and let them know we were good.…

"When they took me into the O.R., I took a deep breath and went to sleep. When I woke up, I was in the recovery. I just felt so empty inside - one minute I had a life living inside me and 20 minutes later there's nothing. I just started crying hysterically. The nurse came up to me and said "Why are you crying? You got what you wanted, now be quiet; you're going to worry the other girls." I got myself under control and walked out into the waiting room. As soon as I got out of there I just started screaming and crying, "What did I do?" I had to be carried into the car. I cried all the way home - in my life I have never felt so much pain like that day. It's been 4 months now, and it still hurts like it was yesterday," said eighteen year old Shantel Garcia, months after a surgical procedure that changed her life.…
