My first day in the United States
Hundreds of various thoughts and dreams crossed my mind, awakened frightened because of wind shears. Still feeling sleepy, the captain started talking about the weather in Houston and how much time left till landing. We would approach Houston in a short time and my first day in the United States was about to begin. My first day in the United States disturbed me too much although it ended well.

At this time one of the stewardesses came to me and gave me special form for US arrival security. I have a thing about filling out the forms and I felt happy. But after a while, I felt annoyed because of the many forms that I received. At last the airplane came to a bumpy landing. The airplane went over a long way and at the end parked near one of the floating aisles. German passengers talked with sleepy and deadpan faces which made me feel tired, unwilling to get up from my seat. The cabin's cold and timeworn air disturbed me during the nine hours flight. I thought that at least I could smell freedom after that, but still I could not smell anything in the air. Leaving the plane, I wobbled and I felt cramped.

Although I thought we would directly go inside the terminal, the captain said because of some technical problems we have to use the portable stairs and buses to reach the terminal entrance. Warm winds relaxed me after all. The airport looked amazing to me, huge and completely equipped. I felt curious to go around and take a look. But I relented soon; heavy sweat did not let me to continue in the hot and humid weather. When I entered the terminal, the cold air welcomed me again. One of the

airport's agents guided the foreign passengers including me to the entrance No.2. The situation could be better than that; passengers of four or five flights were all smashed in the same terminal waiting on long lines for their paperwork. "I will never get outa here" I thought.

"C'mon you can do it! It will take an hour or two, not more" I mentioned to myself again.

My heart sank to my stomach, as I hated to fly on planes. I couldn’t even fathom the thought that I was stuck on this plane forever. I rubbed my hand along the smooth armrest and gripped the end as tightly as I could, hoping this was all a dream. Unfortunately, it was not.…

I woke up tired on a beautiful, sunny, Tuesday morning. It was the day I had to fly to San Francisco for my job on a cruise ship. I had been in between cruises, so I had taken the chance to come see my parents in Newark, New Jersey. Later I realized that it could have cost me dearly. I changed into my pressed, white, long sleeved shirt with khaki pants and my sailors hat that I had to wear for my job as a deckhand. I arrive at Newark Liberty International Airport a hour before my flight, where I hug my parents goodbye. I walk in and go through security easily and go to my gate and wait for thirty minutes until we would be able to board.…

As we were herded into the building—which had no air conditioning—hundreds of people lunged toward the counter at the rear of the structure. With body crushed against body, we waited as the uniformed officials behind the windows leisurely examined each passport. At times like this, I wondered what I was doing in Africa.…

I stood on the edge of the plane's door and looked down, but all I saw was the endless blue sky. The buildings and streets were not visible so high above the ground. I extended my arms out, put an immense grin on my face and jumped. I could no longer depend on the floor being below my feet. I had to trust both the wind and my parachute would carry me down to the ground safely. I eagerly stretched out my body in order to captivate every second of freefalling. Those sixty seconds seemed like hours. The pressure of the wind hit my face with power and dominance.…

The air hostess smiled: ‘Welcome aboard, sir. Would you like a newspaper? ‘Yes, please.’ Carl took the newspaper and looked at the ticket. ‘I’m in seat 5F.Where’s that? ‘It’s near the front of the plane, sir. On the left, there. By the window. ‘I see, thank you very much.’ Carl smiled back, she was young and pretty just like my daughter, he thought. He put his bag under his seat and sat down. His friend Harald sat beside him. They watch the older passengers coming onto the plane. Harald looked at his watch.‘9.30 p.m.,’ he said. ‘Good. We’re on time. You’ll be pleased to see your family, won’t you, Harald?’Harald smiled. ‘Yes, I will. Have you seen this, sir?’ he opened his bag and took out two small planes. ‘These are for my sons. ‘How old are your sons?’ Carl asked. ‘Five and almost seven. The older one has a birthday tomorrow. ‘He’ll be very excited tonight then. The plane took off, Carl watched the lights of the airport grow smaller below them. Then the plane flew above the clouds and he could see the moon and the stars in the night sky. He lay back in this seat and closed his eyes.…

The airport buzzed with activity. People scurried about like mice, a middle aged woman consoled her crying baby, a tall man in a business suit yakked into his cell phone. I narrowed my eyes and squinted slightly, scanning the crowds for familiar faces. My shoulders slumped a little. None.…

Like the old days, I just looked outside the window, enjoying the night of Beijing, however, that night was totally opposite. It all seemed right until the bus stopped and some arguing voice flew into my ears. I took off my earphones, watching the mess in this narrow bus. “The rearview mirror was broken by the previous Audi car, but it fled. For the safety sake, I daren’t drive it anymore.” Driver persisted in his opinion no matter how eagerly passengers tried to persuade him. One of them yelled rudely as if he lost 500,000,000 dollars rather than just an accident while another woman asked the compensation for the delay of her business. It is not wise to dispute these boring, troublesome problems in this broken useless bus, so I got off without any hesitance. But I lost hope when there just cold aggressive wind, shut subway station and taxis without empty seats drove me crazy. Just when I was in such a helpless situation, something amazing happened: another bus from the airport was coming! It was like a life-saving straw when I was about to sliding from the cliff. God didn’t abandon me. I ran on the bus as quickly as I can as if it would disappear in a second.…

    My First Day

As of today, August 30th, I, Blah blah blah, took the initiative to explore the entire campus. Today, the temperature could have possibly been right at about 93 degrees, and I decided to walk around this gigantic campus to waste time before my next class. During orientation week, I missed the campus tours because I was too busy sleeping my day away. So, what other way to compensate for lost time than to take my very own campus tour? Initially, I intended to look for the art buildings, but the best thing I discovered after my journey today happened to be the fact that the art buildings were being reconstructed. Just my luck. However, I did find the Knight Physics building which happens to be absolutely gorgeous. I also happened to stumble across the school’s arbortorium. I felt like I was walking through a jungle with my combat boots on and the leaves hovering above my head. I walked around in a circle and found my way to the school of law. The school of law is literally like its own kingdom within the campus. The students had their own law shirts, and the windows of the classroom even had curtains to block the sun out. I know curtains are a pretty simplistic observation, but I could not help but to find that fascinating! I have failed to sit in any classroom that had panels to block the sun. Only in the law school at the University of .... As I walked away from the law school, I made my way towards the UC area and back around towards the Rat. Passing the vivacious students lounging with their friends, I hiked around the lake under the scorching sun wishing that I had a bottle of water, a hat, and maybe even some sun glasses. The heat was pretty unbearable. Passing between the Hecht and Stanford towers, I ventured towards the school of architecture. That is one white building. I expected it to be more lavish in its exterior design seeing that it is the school of architecture. I walked past the school of architecture and head…
