My First Day at School
It was Tuesday the first of September when I started secondary school at St. Patrick’s College. As the eldest in my family I had no one to answer any of my worries or fears before I walked through the large iron gates on such a huge day in my life.

I could hardly get to sleep the night before because I was so nervous and excited at the same time. My alarm clock sounded at seven am and I put on my brand new uniform despite a lot of difficulty with the top button of my shirt. I ate little breakfast as I was very tense about the day ahead.

When I arrived at St. Patrick’s on the school bus Mr Howard was there to welcome us. His friendly words made me feel less anxious. Once the bell rang all first years had to go to the boy’s gym for an assembly. When we arrived Mr Rafferty, Mrs Corey and Mr Howard spoke about proper uniform, the rules and being on time for class. After they had told us everything I felt a bit panicky encase I was late for class or maybe if I failed to remember to do my homework. Before we were sorted into class groupings all first years were handed their first book, a homework diary. I really liked the front cover because it was bright and colourful. Shortly afterwards we were put into our classes. I was excited about finding out what class I would be in. The name of my class was Eight Derg and I was thrilled to find out that I was in the top class. I was happy there were two people from my primary school in my class and their names were Shane and Darren.

Our Form teacher brought us to our Form class and presented us with our time tables. At first I was puzzled, but slowly I got familiar with it. I got to know some boys in my class from Ardboe, Rock and Kildress. Some were shy, others were funny and chatty. I knew I would get on well with them.

I started to get hungry and was delighted and relieved when we were taken to the school canteen for something to eat. A real treat, a hotdog and ice cream. I could hardly believe my first

I dreaded the alarm that woke me up at 6:30 in the morning. It was as loud as a screaming toddler that could be heard for miles. I groggily got out of bed and got ready for my first day of school. It was a weird feeling not putting on a uniform like I had been for the past nine years, but I also enjoyed that freedom. The nervousness became more and more intense as I could closer and closer to campus. When we arrived, I got out of the car, and watched my dad drive off to go take my younger sister to school. There was no going back now; I had no other choice than to walk through those doors. I felt like my throat was in my stomach. I noticed some familiar faces, and I walked towards them. While I was approaching my friends, a senior, facing toward me, walked passed. He must have been at least six feet tall, which was incredibly intimidating for me at just over five feet. I was not used to the fact that I’d potentially have classes with these giants. Additionally, the array of new teachers, and having to learn all of their teaching styles and things they did or did not tolerate was hard in…

I walked into the classroom to see all my new pupils, I was nervous at first but then Miss Maudie introduced me to the class and everything was fine. I wrote my name on the board and told them what it said and where I am from. The class just murmured back to me. I started the day by reading the children a story about cats, I think they liked it but then again some of them did seem immune to imaginative literature. After reading I went to the blackboard and printed the alphabet in large capitals. I wasn’t surprised that everyone knew what they were seeing as most of the first grade had failed last year and where now back again for me to teach them.…

By Friday of that week we were moved into a small apartment in Oak Grove and starting at Sacred Heart on Monday. I hadn’t eaten since Wednesday from all the stress and tears that I couldn’t make go away no matter what I tried. My first day was all a blur, I rarely ate anymore, attempting to fix what I thought was “wrong with me”. Sixth grade was over and I made some nice friends and thankfully the bullying and name calling stopped but the piercing thoughts stayed with me.…

It was the first day back at school for a new year. Many of us still longed to be on holiday, carefree and careless. It showed on our faces as we grumpily and wearily made our way along the corridors to our House Room. This year our form (11) had a new student. When we walked in we all just looked at him, scrutinizing, mentally noting anything unusual. There was something about him though, but I couldn't quite see it. Nobody interacted with him at first - the teachers were all around him, then he was set free, for us students to talk with him, I didn't talk to him myself, rather I just listened to the questions of others, which, he answered them faintly. They ask him questions to get him talking, to get him relaxed, but he simply answered the questions and nothing more. Soon the interest wore off and he was left all alone.…

I was fully optimistic that the day would go well, but it did not fall in the plan that I believed it would. It was the same routine in a new environment. My first day at Larned High School started like every first day before me. The principal, Mr. Langdon, gathered all the students and welcomed us into a new school year. The speech as long but informational. It was a familiar speech that I had heard every first day of school. Unfortunately, this familiarity would end, and now I was stuck roaming the halls in a new school looking for my first class.…

As my mom drove her car to school, she spoke encouraging words to me. As soon as we arrived at school, my hands felt clammy. My mind raced so much that I could not think about anything else but how school would be like. I slowly walked toward the two massive school doors squeezing my mother's hand. My body screamed inside as I entered the school premises with my mother and older brother. My mind raved with many thoughts as of how I was going to make friends, or if the teacher was going to be mean and cruel. I lacked confidence of how I was going to do on that day.…
