My First Computer
Introduction
I began working with computers about 3 years ago. Needless to say it was a shocking experience sitting in front of a picture tube and not knowing how it worked or where to begin. I began by hitting buttons and asking question at the same time. The first computer that I bought was a new Packard Bell 486 with windows 3.1 and a Cannon bubble jet. It was more troublesome to use and I was not computer literate and I had no ideal what I had but I had a computer in my home. I was asked prior to buying the computer what I wanted put on it my answer was whatever it comes with and I had no idea what to use so the guy put some programs on it and I took it home and was in business. I would do little things at first just to try and get a feel for this thing but it would amaze me or frustrate me. I had this thing and did not know what to do with it at times I felt like throwing it out the window. The more I tried reading the book the more I got confused and I had no patience with this technology. I looked through several different computer books and that did not help. So I finally gave up on computers and left them alone for several years. After five years I found myself in the need of a computer because I had moved up in position and it required the use of a computer and everything was becoming electronic including the forms. I when out and brought a new up to date computer for that time. It came with all this fancy software and hardware. I was happy to have it but could only do so much work on it. I could do PowerPoint slides that was my biggie I would pull up a blank screen input what I wanted print it out and head for the next slide. But PowerPoint was not the only thing the bosses wanted they wanted Excel spreadsheet, graphs, memos, and all this other stuff that I had no ideal of doing. I sat down with a

I have always been fascinated with computers going back to when I was in elementary school. I was intrigued by the capabilities of technology, and after acquiring my own desktop computer I began to explore the vast combinations and possibilities of an operating system. Since I had yet to become connected to the internet, I spent my time teaching myself what each program and setting could produce. Much of my early knowledge of computers stemmed from my curiosity, and by fourth grade I was known as the “go to technician,” helping the teachers connect their laptop to the projector or other similar tasks. When our school added a new high-tech computer lab I was ecstatic, and in this lab I learned even more, adding to my existing knowledge. My reputation at school grew, and every year increasingly more teachers called on my assistance, even following me through middle school and high school. My interest continued, and for my eighth grade career fair project I built a fully running computer from spare parts, without a metal enclosure or hard drive, using a flash drive to boot and run a Linux based operating system. As a senior I work with my school’s IT Department as a student intern: solving problems, completing research, and maintaining the functionality of our equipment. I find helping others with my skills very rewarding and this further drives…

The first step in building a computer is deciding what type of machine you want to build. Do you want a really inexpensive computer for the kids to use? A small, quiet machine to use as a media computer in the living room? A high-end gaming computer? Or maybe you need a powerful machine with a lot of disk space for video editing. The possibilities are endless, and the type of machine you want to build will control many of the decisions you make down the line. Therefore, it's important to know exactly what you want the machine to accomplish from the start.…

Back in 1986, when I was in eighth grade; my first experience with computers was horrible. We would sit in class and enter line after line of code; which made as much sense to me as typing in a foreign language. I was typing in letters and numbers, but had no idea what they meant. Hours were spent this way; so at the end of the exercise I could hit ”enter” and see some lines flash across the screen over and over. By the time I was finished with eighth grade I never wanted to see another computer ever again. Unfortunately the following year in high school I had to take a computer course. It was more of the same; a bunch of codes and “mumbo-jumbo” that had no meaning to me what so ever. I struggled through…

The first time I gazed upon a computer- at a friend’s house, young and curious, and that exact moment, my adventure with technology started. I ran home and turned on my family’s ancient, bulky, computer and with my small clumsy hands, unfamiliar with the mechanics of this device. Although I had no clue how to use this foreign object, the bright flashy lights captivated me; my eyes were locked on this screen that I so desperately wanted to understand. My parents soon realized that our family needed access to the internet like everyone else, we were lagging behind. Having internet was a double edged sword- I could explore the free web to my heart’s content, but I didn’t realize that my PC was far too old to hold up any longer. Soon afterwards, my first computer met it’s end.…

The past few weeks in my life have really had an impact on me. In such a short period of time, I have become more aware of the different cultures that exist around the world today. We tend to think that our way of life is the only way there is, or at least the only right way. It is very ignorant to think that everyone believes and behaves the same way. People should stop being so self-centered and take notice and interest in cultural diversity. There are numerous different cultures in our country alone. One in particular is the Amish culture, which I would like to familiarize you with. The Amish culture consists of many unique beliefs that makes their ways unlike that of any other culture. They lead a life of simplicity and yet have very harsh ways of doing things. The Amish is perhaps the most diverse culture in the entire United States.…

    My First Car

First cars are really special. Like most teenagers, I had to settle for a used car, but at least some of my first car dreams seemed likely to come true since my first car was a 1966 Mustang and it was my favorite color blue. It was the deep blue color of the ocean. My first car had some major problems, like the tendency to flood its carburetor at the worst possible moments and a thirst for oil which, made owning it a bad experience. The carburetor would flood just about every time I would turn it off for more than ten minutes. So my dad finally got someone to work on the carburetor and they eventually got that problem fixed. Worst of all, my Mustang drank oil like a fraternity boy drinks beer. When I first noticed that the car was using oil and that it would be a problem, came about a month after I took possession of the car when the oil gauge arrow suddenly dipped into the red range. When my dad pulled the dipstick out, only the tip had any oil covering it. It was then that he discovered that my car was discharging oil out of its exhaust pipes and that I would have to check its oil every time I filled up with gas. Eventually, I found that I was adding a quart of oil every one hundred miles and discovered that the oil blowing out the car’s exhaust had permanently darkened the paint around the car’s exhaust…

    A Perfect Tech Nerd

From an early age, I've been deeply fascinated by computing. I was first introduced to this gadget, my 30 pounds Pentium 1, by my dad when I was just nine. I was immediately struck by this incredible machine that seemed to take a life of its own. This sparked the desire to learn more about computers, to learn about how they work; a desire that still drives me to this day. More than anything, I always imagined a computer as more than just any machine unlike the other electronics in our house; certainly given the amount of time I would spend on a computer, it was more human to me than most of my family members and friends These were still the days when most people in Pakistan did not have access to computers. However, I wanted to go beyond merely learning to play simple games. As soon as I got my first internet connection, a 28K dial up modem, I discovered an online community filled with wonders and information about all kinds of stuff. It was then that I set for myself the goal that I would teach myself everything and anything about computers and how they were configured Although I formally started studying computer sciences when I was in high school, I began my informal studies when I was merely 12 . However, I had always been fascinated by numbers and was naturally apt at performing computations in my head. As such, I found the laws and computations performed in science very logical and as such pursued physics and chemistry during these years. This further chiseled my analytical and evaluation skills. Although I have grown older, my interest in computers and computing has not faded I have never allowed it to be restricted to classrooms and school life. In the last 15 months, I have self-taught myself to create my own browser using Visual Basic. I have also been learning Java and Python and have managed to create automated testing frameworks while building a lot of other internal tools. Besides this, I sometimes collaborate with friends, both…

In the early 1970’s, personal computers were unheard of. Computer technology was reserved for the corporate environment. This reservation was based upon three reasoning’s. The first reasoning was cost; a computer was simply too expensive for the common household. Only a business had the financial means, outside of the extremely wealthy, to finance ownership of a computer. The second reason was usability. Early computers were not designed for an everyday user. A computer user during this time had to be educated with the knowledge of computer coding to be able to operate a computer. This in turn leads us to the third reason - purpose. A business had multiple uses for computers – reports, databases, payroll, office networking, financial tracking and so forth. The main stream household had no real use for computers in everyday life. Not only was the use of the computer limited to corporate like…
