My Extended Family
My Extended Family
By Amy Markle
Composition I

It seems like yesterday all the kids where little and needed me all the time. Now Francesca is married, with children, Kaitlin is living on her own with her daughter, and JJ and April live with them. I feel like it was only the other day we were all crowding around the dinner table having a nice family meal, while John their father was off who knows where, drunk, high, spending money he didn’t really have to even spend. I stop and think how these kids ever made it all these years before without us. Us being myself and their uncle Scott, we had been together five years by then and I knew this was the beginning of something wonderful. If only I had known how much it would affect and change my life and theirs. I guess it happened gradually, the kids coming over for dinner, needing winter clothes, taking showers at my house and I always wondered where their father was. Then I found out, John was an alcoholic, drug addict who somehow had custody of these wonderful kids. I guess, I should have known how bad it was by how the kids acted but I didn’t. I hadn’t known abuse like that, I was from a place where we had parents and had dinner together, not 14 year old Frankie (Francesca) going into the bar and dragging her father out, which ended up being the event that finally caused me to go and file for full custody of these kids. It was the best choice I could have ever made. I remember filing the papers and thinking , I am either going to get an irate phone call from John acting like he cares, telling me I will never win, or he will say nothing and I will end up with these wonderful kids as my own. As I sat there in the court building filing the papers it occurred to me just how much help and love and parenting these kids where going to need and how happy I was to do it. But I should of known that the happiness was not going to last. It appeared to be a normal day August 18, 2009, the kids had just

The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine the various barriers faced by grandparent caregivers. Recent studies indicate that the percentage of grandparent caregiver has increased substantially in 2005, the U.S. Census Bureau (Simmons & Dye, 2003) reported that 3.6% (5.8 million) of adults 30 years and older were living with a grandchild younger than 18years old (2.4 million) of whom were responsible for raising their grandchildren. The factors contributing to this increase are as varied and complex as the barriers facing grandparents today. This study will evaluate the age, race, financial, medical and mental…

In the essay "The Color of Family Ties" by Naomi Gerstel and Natalia Sarksian, the authors assert that traditional nuclear families are not the only ones capable of supportive relationships and strong family connections. In the other hand, minority families also discover that their families illustrate the most supportive relationships and strongest family ties. According to Gerstel and Sarksian, they states "Black and Latino/a, especially Puerto Rican families are more disorganized than White families, and that their families ties are weaker" (47). People usually believe Black and Latino/a are weaker and more disorganized than Whites. But the authors also point out "Minority individuals are more likely to live in extended family homes than Whites and in many ways more likely to help out their aging parents, grandparents, adult children, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, and other skin" (48). In my opinion, I agree with this statement and I believe untraditional families are more likely to live with extended family than Whites. In "An Indian Story" by Roger Jack, it talks about nontraditional families with supportive relationships and strong family ties, which is a good example to describe of minority.…

By the time the first semester of fifth grade ended, my parents were well split up. I guess it was some way to put an end to the constant bickering and daily arguments. During this time period, me and my sister had bonded greatly over many hours of being locked up in the basement or shut up in our bedroom. Being the oldest child hadn’t felt as satisfying to me anymore as I had watched my sister struggle to understand the revisions our family was making, nor did I have as much clarity of the situation at the time. After what seemed like an eternity of battles, my sister and I came home from a visit at our aunt’s house to find my dad sitting on the couch with a suitcase awaiting our arrival. The suddenness set up the moment to be a blur. Even though neither of us knew what was actually happening, we had sensed all the hurt emotions rushing from my mom in the form of tears. Soon, Mandy and I added to the puddle being…

My background, the combination of being Jewish and Ecuadorian as well as the people whose influence have shaped who I am today, have instilled in me a sense of morality, compassion, and tolerance. My family has always been supportive, encouraging me to explore my surroundings and take on greater challenges so that I can go outside of my comfort zone and experience all that I can be. All my life I have celebrated the holidays and traditions associated with my religion and ethnicity, thus gaining a unique perspective on the differences and similarities between them. When I visit my Bubby for Chanukah, we eat potato latkes, light the menorahs, and play with dreidels. During Christmas at Grandma’s house, we decorate the tree, eat empanadas, and…

A significant challenge I have faced in the past years is the divorce of my parents. My parents divorced around four or five years ago, when I was nine or ten. This challenge has not affected me academically, because throughout the process of the divorce my parents always told me that I should not allow my problems at home to affect me as a person or academically, during this time I kept up a 4.0 GPA. Some of the positive things that have come out of this situation is growing my relationship with my immediate family, and also with my non-immediate family. Another positive outcome is me being able to see just how strong I am, the divorce was very hard for me and my sister but we stayed positive and were able to overcome this problem together,…

The day I left the father of my children I didn’t know where I would go or what I would do. All I knew is that I had to escape. I ran out the front door and jumped into my van with my ten month old baby still in my arms. I speedily drove to work and called my sister. Immediately she came to pick me up. I then explained to her that Fred had threatened to kill me. I had never told my sister that I was in an abusive relationship, but deep down she already knew. All the way talking about the situation, we went to pick up my oldest two children from school. For the first time in seven years I felt free.…
