My Experience With Tutor. Com
A good tutoring session can mean the difference in a whole letter grade for some students. Tutoring at any stage of writing can positively influence the outcome of a paper. I recently wrote a paper, and then completed a tutoring session with Tutor.com. Another student and I wrote a paper, and the tutor helped us fix some problems with our writing. Tutor.com or any tutoring could be helpful at any stage in the writing process, and I would encourage other students to use this wonderful resource.
Tutor.com has highly skilled tutors who look for more than just surface level items. When using the website, I had to choose between a live tutoring session and a 24-hour review with feedback. I chose the 24-hour review. Furthermore, since I was

My tutoring session came at the near the end of my writing process, but it could be helpful at any point. In particular, I was in the Editing stage, as presented by James D. Williams in Preparing to Teach Writing. The other stages are Invention, Planning, Drafting or scribing, Pausing, Reading and rereading, Revising, Editing, and lastly Publishing. Editing is the stage where grammar and punctuation matter the most. Until this stage, the focus of the author is to get their ideas on the page and to organize their thoughts. Nevertheless, no matter how important these stages are, the stages can be grouped together to form a more coherent idea, and sometimes authors do not go in this exact order, but rather jump or linger, in one or …show more content…
It was nearly complete and just needed a quick check. I would suggest to all writers have someone else read their paper at this stage. The editing stage is the time to strive for perfect grammar, spelling, and sentence level-errors, and authors need an educated person to look for these things. When I submitted my paper, the tutor commented mainly on comma use. This helped me polish my paper up before the final stage: submission or Publishing.
In conclusion, throughout the writing process, it can be beneficial to receive help from a tutor or friend. Sometimes the writers cannot judge their work well enough, because they are too attached to their papers, or are burnt out from working on it. In either case, it is a good idea to receive help. Therefore, because of my experience with Tutor.com, I would recommend it to other

Joseph Harris’ essay “Revising” (2006 pg.452-69); serves as a guide in how to correctly revise any writing you have ever completed. Harris designates four points that must be taken under consideration while revising. Before getting to the core of his argument, Harris notes that revising is not the same as editing. The essay points out that students are trained too just polish and make their writing sleeker rather than making a difference or significant change to the original. From there Harris brings up his first point stating that the author must decide what exactly it is that they are trying to convey. Harris believes the problem stems from that fact that many writers focus too much on correcting mistakes without thinking of what it is they…

When a person begins writing they have many obstacles that they must overcome. Some face issues with creating well-written sentences, writing thesis sentences and others face issues with expanding their vocabulary. It can be difficult to do and takes a great deal of practice and patience. A student, Amanda Grumke, faced these same obstacles as she began writing. At the beginning of her English Composition 1 class, her writing landed at a very low level. After a semester of practice, she has made improvements. Amanda has improved her sentence structures, transitional words, and improved points of view.…

Additionally, the tutor sets an agenda before the student starts to read the paper by stating, “I am going to mark down what to come back to as you read”. After the student finishes reading, before the tutor expresses her opinions about the essay, she asks the student what she thinks about the work she just read. The tutor listens to the student’s response and then explains what and why she marked certain sentences or phases on the paper. Furthermore, when the tutor is making note of her corrections, she phrases her corrects in a suggestive way—“This could be changed, does this sounds better, I wonder if, I think we can scratch this”. After going through her notes, the tutor asks the student if she understands her corrections and after she answers, the tutor goes back to the corrections and asks the student, “how could we re-write this sentence”. Advising the student to “step back for a minute and think about a totally new sentence that does the same thing”, the tutor listens to the student’s new sentence structure. After verbally talking through the sentence, the tutor hands the student the pen to write down the new sentence—continuing scaffolding technique. In…

With her experiment set, Sommers set out to discover the difference in interpretations of revision strategies between students and experienced adult writers. As Sommers explains, revising is the last step in the writing process, one that comes after both the first and second drafts. This means that revision comes only after having prewritten once, and written a paper twice. Because two drafts come before revision, revision can be interpreted as only small superficial mistakes, or more deep conceptual mistakes.…

Throughout the semester, the Year Eight class have studied figurative language, Shakespeare, persuasive and narrative writing, as well as reviewing the role punctuation plays in ensuring clarity in writing. Chloe is a very friendly and capable student who has consistently produced work of a solid Year Eight standard. She can sometime allow herself to be distracted in class, this means that she often runs out of time to effectively edit her work. As a result of this she sometimes misses punctuation and grammatical errors that could have easily been corrected. In order to improve, Chloe will need to re-evaluate her use of class time to ensure that she leaves herself enough time to carefully edit all tasks before she submits them. I wish her all the best for next year.…

    Online Tutoring Analysis

Tutoring has been around for hundreds of years. It has come from tutoring one-on-one to tutoring in groups, peer groups and now even online at a distance. One of the first forms of tutoring, which is still used today, was conceived by a well-known educator by the name of Andrew Bell. This form of tutoring was referred to as "peer tutoring" which is a system of instruction in which learners help each other and learn (themselves) by teaching. Andrew Bell 's initial reasoning behind using peer tutoring was to give under privileged children the opportunity to learn. This method of tutoring has been used and is still being used today in schools and learning centers. It was designed to have the more advanced students to help the students who were challenged in the same area, to understand content better. This allowed for more students to continue to learn a subject and not keep a teacher or instructor from being able to progress further because of…

    My Writing Journey

The Writing Journey Revision is the act of revising, it is to correct, edit and redraft. When I begin to revise a paper, first I reread what I wrote then afterwards, I read it aloud, the human mind won’t necessarily point out the mistakes because the brain will correct what you read and implement it to what needs to be there. Depending on the topic or the importance of the paper, I’ll ask around for help, or sometimes I would ask a friend to edit my paper to point out my mistakes and learn from them. Ever since 8th grade I pushed myself to convert to an improved writer through the art of literature.…

I think that now I write papers more structured and organized rather than throwing all of my ideas down on the paper. In the future, I think that I will seek feedback by asking a friend to proof read my work or by going to the ask center for help after I have read it aloud several times. If I need more feedback I could talk to my professor and see what his expectations are and what I can improve on. Overall, the experience that I had with all of my proof reading and feedback resources was positive. I think that I have learned more about my habits, which have helped me improve my writing skills in…

A major factor that has contributed to this shift in my writing abilities is the process by which I write my papers. Before taking this course, I never saw the importance of prewriting, and I truthfully thought of it as a waste of time. However, I now consider it to be absolutely essential to my writing process. Through brainstorming, list making, and outlining I have learned to organize my thoughts into a structure that makes sense for the topics I write about. Not only does it help me to focus my ideas around a central topic, it also helps me to have better time management when writing papers. Before I started prewriting, I would wait until the last minute to write my entire paper. Prewriting helps me to take it a little bit at a time,…

As I wrote my literacy narrative, I learned many new things about how to perfect my writing. I used to always begin my writing process with an outline, because this is what I was taught in high school, but this time I tried a new strategy. I learned this new strategy from the text, Shitty First Drafts. First I typed up a bunch of nonsense that I wanted in my paper. Then I went back and put it all in order and made sense of it. This definitely made writing a 1000-word narrative a whole lot easier. Although after I had done this I realized that I didn’t go back in and change my past and present tense verbs. This caused some confusion later when I had others peer edit my paper, but I made sure to fix those errors on my final draft. I learned a…

In this paper, I learned how the value of outlining, and listing as part of the writing process. I had to approach a mediocre story with a fresh new perspective.…
