My Experience in English Language

I am not a professional reader, nor am I a professional writer. As a matter of fact, I do not like writing at all especially in English, but then writing is a part of life. Since English is my second language, I always have a hard time writing and reading in English.

However, I have had to learn English to survive in this big country. I was born in Thailand. I wrote, read, and spoke in the Thai language almost all of my life. I had English class in Thailand class, but it was just three hours a week. English was not important to me back then until I moved to South Carolina, USA. I came here when I was seventeen. For me, it is very important to write and read the language of the place where one lives. However, my English was very bad. I could read, but I did not understand I read. Every book in English was closed book, no matter how I turned the pages. Also, I could not write at all. I moved to an environment that was totally different from the one I came from. I knew that this would be my biggest hurdle that I would ever have to overcome.

My first day in high school, I sat in the back of the classroom and felt shy about speaking with friends and teachers because I cannot frame a good sentence to express my problem. I did not even go to cafeteria to order my food; therefore, I always bought snacks from Walmart instead, and I took them to school with me. One time I forgot to bring my snacks, so I grabbed some fruit and milk from the shelf. After I paid money the old lady at the cashier said, "Thank you, sweet heart." I gave her a smiling face and I spoke to myself "sweet heart is not my name!" Also, I had difficulty understanding people with an unusual American accent. However, Mrs. Jester my English teacher helped me in each and every step of my problems that I faced. She taught me how to write easy poems. They are called "circle poem". That helped me improve my

Because when I came to the United States at a young age I faced a lot challenges and hardships but I decided to keep going and stay resilient. One of the challenges I faced was learning the English language. At the beginning when I arrived the U.S I did know any single word in English and that was upsetting and sad to me because everybody in my school knew how to speak it. English language has always been a difficult language to learn for me. But, I try to not give up and I am improving in it through my diligence. Nevertheless, I was dedicated to develop my English skills through learning and studying new vocabulary words and tried to use them in my daily life dialogues. My growth mindset was pushing me every single day to learn and face my obstacles. I also liked to read a lot of books which improved my reading skills and correspondingly gave me new words and notions. Despite, sometimes I do not understand the senses of the words while reading it I used a dictionary. I listened to music and read the lyrics of the songs because I have told that this is one of the effective methods to learn a language. On the other hand, I have taken plenty of workshops, programs on how to progress in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. I know learning a language is hard but what it is harder is to not give up and stay focused on my own work. I have failed a lot of times in the past but once I fail I…

English was my nightmare; it was really hard for me not only to speak the language but also to write. I couldn’t imagine myself writing a single paragraph in less than one hour. I used to get really nervous when I just hold my pen and start thinking. “I can’t” was the only world that I had in my mind while I was writing. For me, it was really frustrating to translate everything in my mind to ENGLISH. Moreover, following the grammar rules was also confusing for me since it is way different than my native language.…

I couldn’t communicate very well with people because I would doubt myself wondering if I said the right thing. I would stutter, and it made me scared of public speaking. I didn’t really knew how to write a properly, or how to use punctuations and grammar. so I asked my teachers to help me to write better and learn more vocabulary, I would get tested on vocabulary, and ask for help when I needed them…

When my sisters and I first came to the United States I had trouble understanding American English. Though we had been taught English in our school in the camp we were not prepared to learn in a completely English environment in a completely new culture. The transition was quite a challenge for us, not to mention starting well into the second half of the school year, but we pressed through and managed to get good grades.…

In my daily basis I can speak three languages and think it is great. In college I speak English, at home Russian/Ukrainian/English. My English was very bad and it was my first difficulty here. Overcome, but still a difficulty. For example, when it was necessary to call the bank or regarding any bill, at first I become covered with a cold sweat. Sometimes they hang up on me, which was understandable, but then I learn to write it down their names (practice in alphabetical), after that they were more patient with me. I didn’t live and didn’t work on Brighton Beach, where everybody speaks only Russian and it helped me to improve my speaking. Also, I was lucky to work in a medical office with all native speaking English employees. It helped me a lot. I don’t know how about in other states, but in New York is both good and bad, no one…

Since Spanish was the only language I knew since it was the only language spoken in my household. I entered Elementary School insufficient in the English language and due to my hesitance to speak in class ; I was put into the Speech program. A program designed to teach children to pronounce, articulate, and enunciate words in the English language. I hated the unwanted attention my language barrier brought towards me. One day as I was called on to read a page from a short story named "Frog and Toad Are Friends" as I read ; I recall blushing in embarrassment due to my peer's ongoing laughter on how funny I pronounced the words. My body became tense my face burned more as time passed. When I felt like I couldn't take the humiliation any longer I stood up and walked out the class. My teacher soon followed after me and offered her time to listen to me vociferate my anger. After listening to my rant she smiled, patted my head and said. "I know it's hard but if you work hard you will graduate from the program and perhaps be better than your peers." This statement motivated me to be the best student possible. I practiced daily my handwritten phonics flashcards, read various books to augment my vocabulary, and practiced on my own my presentation/ social skills. By the end of the year, I flourished demolishing my timidness. I began participating regularly in class, had one of if not…

I was born and raised as a child in Beijing, China and grew up around people that spoke mandarin Chinese all the time. Mandarin was my primary language growing up as a child, I learned how to read and write when I first started school and I have been speaking Mandarin for twenty years now. This was my first challenge I faced about learning because it takes so much memorization and practice to learn such a vast language and there were times when I thought I couldn’t do it but I got help from my parents and my teachers. At times I wanted to give up because my teachers would get mad at me for saying or writing the wrong thing. I remember a certain memory in third grade of being called to the board to spell the word “student”, but I spelled it incorrectly and I’ll never forget because the whole class laughed at me and the teacher was very disappointed. But I knew I couldn’t give up and with enough time and effort I began to get good at writing essays and reading books in Chinese. As I progressed in school they started teaching English along with Mandarin because it is such an important language to the world and widely used and this just added to the challenge of being a successful student. With more help from my parents and teachers I started to learn enough English to read my first book, which was Forest Gump, which I really liked and it also became one of my favorite movies. I…

Mark schemes are prepared by the Principal Examiner and considered, together with the relevant questions, by a panel of subject teachers. This mark scheme includes any amendments made at the standardisation meeting attended by all examiners and is the scheme which was used by them in this examination. The standardisation meeting ensures that the mark scheme covers the same, correct way. As preparation for the standardisation meeting each examiner analyses a discussed at the meeting and legislated for. If, after this meeting, examiners encounter unusual answers which have not been discussed at the meeting they are required to refer these to the Principal Examiner. It must be stressed that a mark scheme is a working document, in many cases further developed reactions to a particular paper. Assumptions about principles of assessment remain constant, details will change, depending on the content of a particular examination paper.…

I first learned the alphabet in kindergarten. I was also taught phonics and how to write the letters correctly. Although I never really had the best handwriting and still do not have the best handwriting to this very day. Then, as I began to progress learned my name, then I moved onto smaller words like it or as just as everyone else usually does. In the third grade I was taught how to write using cursive letters. I do not and never completely learned how to write in cursive. My teacher tried her best, but I never really cared to learn as I still did not print my letters in the best handwriting to begin with. Then in first grade I learned numbers in Spanish and had weekly spelling tests on the weekly set of words. I had weekly spelling tests all through elementary school. Although I never really had to study for the spelling tests as I was taught phonics really well. Spelling has always been one of my strongest areas of English since elementary school. In middle school, I began to prepare for college. Although I was great at spelling in the fifth grade I was in the spelling bee. I did not do well in it because I lost on the word solemn. In the eighth grade I applied to be in the International Baccalaureate and was accepted. That began my journey to high school with a challenge that I would do the best that I can whether or not I plan or did continue in the program. Although I kept my grades up in every subject, but I seemed to struggle with Spanish. Spanish did not really become one of my best subjects until the tenth grade when I had a great Spanish teacher. Although my freshman year Spanish teacher has been one of the best, she never really could have helped me learn Spanish. Although I will give her credit with trying to help me whether it be after school tutoring or help me on the assignment. My writing was better after my sophomore year because my teacher really broke…

English is not my native language, but it was always my dream to be fluent in it. I first started to learn it when I was in elementary school in Russia. At that time we never had to write essays, we only studied the letters, numbers and small vocabulary. Later in the high school I learned descriptive topics and was able to tell and write in English about myself, my family, my country and my hobby. The most of my knowledge came from my college, where English was my second foreign language I have chosen to study, the first one was German. I remember having hard time to rehearse around hundred words for each class, to read long classical texts and complicated newspaper articles. However, the hardest part was to translate from Russian to English complying with the syntax and observing lexical rules. Unfortunately I never had a chance to write an essay in English when I was in college and this, I think is one of my weaknesses. When it comes to writing I feel diffident.…

The problems with English during my kindergarten years started the cowardice of speech that plagues me constantly, yet it also gave me the opportunity to realize that my language barrier could also be something to take advantage of. For example, if there is ever a job that I need, the employer would be more attracted to the idea of a person that can speak two languages. The isolation that occurred in middle school caused me personality and social problems, yet it also gave me the chance to gain a bit of independence and knowledge of how society works. The difficulty that came along with high school and how easy it is to procrastinate in such an environment can easily make me feel overwhelmed, but all the wonderful knowledge that came with incredible teachers and the lesson of growth mindset will help me for future years to come. The smallest actions I take constantly cause numerous paths to unfold beneath my feet, but I will eventually walk on the right path that my identity as a student has led me to with special…

Writing for me always was a problem. When I was in fifth grade I was in Cuba, at that time is when teacher teach you how to write essay, and how to put a comma splice. I never learned the correct form of using grammar, verb, adverb, conjunction, because I came to the United State. When I started the school here I had to learn English first, so I really didn’t focus on how to write properly. Middle school for me was hard with the writing stuff. I didn’t know how to write properly so my English teacher always was sending notes to my parent “that I wasn’t doing well with my writing “. And it was not a problem of language, it just was a problem that I didn’t know how to write a perfect paragraph or the conjugation of words. I start high…

When I was seven years old, I came here from Mexico. Only being able to experience two years of school in Spanish rendered much of my Spanish writing skills virtually useless. Since the time I started reading and writing in English I have found it difficult to do well on the subject. Being that at home the only language spoken is Spanish, I have found it extremely difficult to grasp the English language and all of its rules. There are many rules to follow in the English language that at many times contradict themselves. Same goes to reading, there are many ways of reading that are confusing to me.…
