Software engineering applies the fundamental concepts and principles of both computer science and engineering in order to create, operate, and maintain software systems. The University of Waterloo offers a software engineering program in which one can earn a Bachelor of Software Engineering degree (BSE). This program is offered jointly by the school’s Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Mathematics, and is recognized as both an engineering and computer science undergraduate program. This specific program offered at Waterloo is a co-op program where attending students alternate between four-month study terms at school and four-month work terms at various businesses, industries, or the government. While on work terms, one can experience the practical concepts which are applied in the real world, and also earn a salary at the same time, helping to finance one’s education. Due to the work terms, the overall time it takes to complete this program is about four years and eight months, and while this may seem longer than other programs offered at other schools, a person graduating this program would have an edge in the software industry as they would be graduating with two full years of work experience and pay. The cost of attending this program for the four years is around $94,480, which includes all expenses. In order to be accepted into the university, one must have taken fundamental courses for software engineering such as: Advance Functions, Calculus and Vectors, Chemistry, Physics, and English. Courses such as Computer Science is recommended, as it is necessary to have a background in programming in order to be admitted, as well as having an average starting in the low nineties and obtaining a minimum grade of seventy percent in all mandatory courses.…

My first day in high school was so overwhelming. My heart was racing and my legs were shaking. I was excited and nervous at the same time. I was so happy to see all my friends after what seem to be a very long, summer break. Though I was glad to see all my friends, I could not help but think about what classes I was going to attend. Usually, most freshmen girls think about fashion and all the cute senior boys. On one hand, I was thinking about all the fun, exciting, and new activities that would take place as a freshman. On the other hand, I was more concerned about passing high school at the top of my class because this is where the real world begins. As I reached the classroom doors, my heart raced faster and butterflies began to flutter in my stomach. Before I entered the red door with the tall, black letters reading “Welcome Freshmen”, I took a deep breath as though I was getting prepared to perform on a stage in front of millions of people. Shaking inside my skin, I twisted the bronze doorknob and opened the door. I thought that the class would be quiet, but it was filled with at least twenty-five freshmen that were socializing with one another. I sat at the first empty desk in my sight. The teacher was not there yet, so I began to socialize with everyone else. Minutes later, the door swung open and our teacher entered. She was short in height and weighed about one hundred and forty-five pounds. She had black, silky, well-trimmed hair and wore plenty of makeup. Her eyes were brown and they were the size of an owl’s. She had a round face and a cute button nose. She walked over to her desk and neatly placed her books upon it. The frown on her face gave me an impression that she was mean but after her short, well-spoken introduction, my assumptions changed. She had the voice of a soprano and was a very nice and inviting woman. Her name was Mrs. Hutchinson. When she finished introducing herself, she handed the class our first…
