The Birthday Present...

I have always held a full time job, since I was 18. I worked in a group home as a direct care worker until I got my CNA certification, then I worked in various nursing homes. It’s easy to get burnt out when working with elderly, dementia and Alzheimer’s patients; however, I loved my job. Taking care of others is what I wanted to do. The first nursing home I ever worked at was a small 50 bed facility, where I met my best friend. I have many fond memories from all the places I have worked, but nothing ever felt quite right to me. In July of 2011 I got the opportunity of my life! I was job searching, due to recently being laid off from the nursing home I was employed at. I was putting in applications on the internet daily; I swear I must have sent out a million. I came across a job posting for a nursing assistant at The Veterans Affairs Medical Center, on the Psychiatry Unit in Ann Arbor. I read the description and I knew that was the job for me!
The VAMC is a hospital dedicated to serving the veterans of the United States wars. It is like a regular hospital except it only treats veterans. I am an active supporter of our military men and women. I knew this job was special and would make me feel like I was giving back to all those who fought for our freedoms. I sent in my resume and the requirement’s right away. I checked the status of the job daily. I kept hoping for a phone call! The week seemed to drag on and on. I started to give up hope, and then I received the phone call that would change my life.
It was July 19th, my 28th birthday. I hadn’t worked for two months so money was tight. I was at my parents’ house relaxing in the pool, trying not to be depressed. I had gotten out of the pool to order a pizza for my family when my phone rang. It was one of those calls that you look at the number and

think, “Should I answer this?” “It looks like a bill collector’s number.” I let it ring one more time and figured I better get it

Throughout the past year I have endured several life changing occurances. One of my family members troubled through the treturous stages of cancer and unfortunately has passed at this time. If I have taken anything away from this, it is that family is the most important resource in a persons life. Without those people who tell you that you can, regardless of the circumstances, becoming succesful could be very challenging. After clearing my head, I was able to start thinking of a career choice that would make me enjoy going to work. I encountered an opening at a local CVS/Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician and applied. After being hired, I immediately fell in love with the surroundings, the people, the patient interaction, and the knowledge…

My personal nursing mission statement is changing and developing as my career advances, however, one core piece will remain constant. I will strive to provide the best, safest, most ethical and compassionate nursing care that I can for all patients and family members with whom I come in contact. I began my post-high school academic career as an accounting major. I enjoyed the challenge of manipulating a report until I had balanced. I thought I had found my calling. As my first semester was nearing an end, I found myself contemplating the thought of sitting behind a desk all day. I wondered if I would find fulfillment in this work as a career? The more I pondered this thought, the more I realized that this was not the right career path for me. I saw images of the medical assistant program in the catalog at the school where I was attending. I could not shake the thought of the medical field for a profession. I attained my medical assistant degree and worked in the field for 10 years. The longer I worked, the more I realized that there was more that I wanted to do, but my current degree restricted me from going further. I researched nursing school programs and selected one with a night/weekend program that would allow me to continue working full-time during my studies. I have a family that I needed to continue to provide for and this seemed to be the best fit. My nursing school decision was fortified when I was selected for an award by the nursing faculty from all four semesters for excellence in the clinical setting. After graduation, I began my nursing career working as a case manager for orthopedic worker’s compensation patients. During this time I gained critical knowledge of the importance of clear documentation, the ever-changing requirements of insurance companies and an extra measure of compassion for…

It was a beautiful August day. The sun was extra bright, probly because I had been in a hospital room for the past three days, and there was a warm breeze that made the ride home great. When we pulled up in front of the house the street was lined with cars. I could hear music playing and the smell of BBQ. There were so many familiar faces. My aunts and uncles, cousins, friends. I could see a Welcome Home banner over the garage and I immediately began smiling. This was all for my baby! I was so shocked. As I stepped out of the car everyone began to run over. There were hugs and “congratulations” coming from every direction. This was the best day of my…

Children are the greatest dreamers who have ever been known by the universe. Their dreams are endless, because they are not limited by any conventions and knowledge about how the world works. In childhood fantasies everything is possible: and flying on a broomstick, and passing through the wall and turn someone and something into anything. Of course, this is only an incorporeal fantasy. But, how can you see that these fantasies are not foreseen reality? It is said that children's dreams are magnificent, clean and naive. Of course, it's fine to dream of how to learn to fly or of having a brother or a sister. Someone dreamt to become an actor or an ice cream seller or someone wanted to be a teacher. Many children wanted to be heroes or to be like their favorite characters from cartoons. I dreamt a lot as a child, and my dreams were sometimes very strange and funny, and I still keep dreaming of most of my childhood dreams.…
