My Childhood Food Memories
My Food Memory

When I was young, I stay together with my fraternal grandfather, grandmother, family and aunties. Often my mother and grandmother will be the homemaker, taking care of me and doing the chores at home.

Being a traditional Asian family and not very well to do then. Most dinner we had it at home and prepared by my grandmother and mother. Then my favorite past time was to catch variety show and dramas on television. As the dining table have limited amount of seats, not everyone ate at the dining table. A few of us will get our share of dinner and sit in the living room to catch our favorite television programs.

For myself then being the youngest and favored by my grandmother and other aunties, often do not go into the kitchen to get my share of dinner. I will rather stay in the living room continue watching my favorite television programs and wait for my dinner. As such my grandmother will get my portion of dinner and add in the different dishes that she had cooked into the plate of rice. When she was doing that, she will routinely add in any accompanied sauces of the dish into my plate of rice. And the end of state of my dinner will be a plate of rice in a mixture of sauce with the different dishes. She will often mixed up the plate of mixture before passing it to me for my dinner. Even though all the different dishes were cook brilliantly and tasty, after the “mixing” done by my grandmother, the dinner became disastrous. Because of this, I dislike having dinner that was serve by my grandmother as it feel like having a plate of “pig feeds”. That when I started getting my own dinner from the kitchen.

From then on, whenever I had my meal, I will never mix different sauces in my meal. I always organize my meal so that I will never mix different favors of dish together when eating. I will taste and savor each dish by its own to appreciate the taste and not tarnish it by mixing it together with other dishes. Due to this habit I become less

Unlike Gary Soto in “Looking for work.” I didn’t look to the television to imitate what my idea of a family was. My family included my mother, my brother and my sister and that was enough for me. I never really focused on not having a dad around; it wasn’t as important as having our mom, who was always there for us. Many people believe that to be a productive family there needs to be two parents in the household. However, I know different. My mother was both parents and did just fine as a single mother raising and supporting three kids all by herself. Mom was the nurse that made me feel better whenever I got sick. She was teacher, because she taught me to read and to write. She cared and loved me but also punished…

These units will often live in a single home with the younger adults caring for the elderly and the small children. It is not uncommon to find a household consisting of three or four generations of grandparents, parent’s aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, children and grandchildren all living together under one…

What makes a family whole? Is it the people in it, tradition, or love? When I think back, one of my most memorable childhood experiences would definitely be learning to ride a bike. Almost every child will encounter this event in some period of their lifetime, and will actually discover a great deal from it. I consider this a classic event in my life that will always be revered, because it has influenced and marked my life in so many different ways. Many people consider learning to ride a bike a new experience, but they do not consider the possibility of it also having an internal meaning that will last forever. This event not only represents freedom for me, but it also helped me establish the foundation on which I base my existence. Learning to ride a two-wheeler demonstrated a new way to have fun, and also illustrates how will-power and perseverance help overcome challenges throughout my life.…

It has been many moons since in kindergarten, and while as a child I did not have a father at home, due to his lost battle due with cancer, I sensed that when my classmate Jonathan wanted to play house, there may have been trouble at home. He informed me, during our creative playtime, that I could be his wife, and at night, he would go out with his girlfriend. I didn’t like the way he played pretend and excused myself from his make-believe land. Even at four years old, my pretend husband wasn’t going to go off with his girlfriend at night, if I had any say so. Typically, when we think of families we think of a married husband and wife with their children -with the family system traditionally occurring through adoption, birth or marriage.…

Why I believe that food tends to bring back family memories would be how as American’s we tend to revolve food around the holidays. For instance what do we all tend to think of when we reminisce about Thanksgiving? Well for starters we all consider Thanksgiving as a day of feasting. Family from near and far come together to spend one day together cooking and eating; sharing memories and laughter as we celebrate a special holiday. As we prepare for this day many American’s spend days shopping and preparing food for the glorious day of reunion with family members. One of my fondest memories of Thanksgiving was last year (2011). On Thanksgiving morning we were woken up by a knock at our front door and were completely startled to see my brother standing on the porch. For most who do not know was that my brother is in the United States Marine Corps and that we have not seen him for over a year because he had been on deployment. That Thanksgiving we actually cooked our own turkey and made most of the food by scratch. Why you ask if this is important? Well we never as a family prepare things homemade and for this Thanksgiving we were all in the kitchen helping each other prepare the food; from making the biscuits to cooking the turkey we all spent quality time and laughs together. That Thanksgiving was one of the best holidays I ever have and the food was such a big part of why that memory is so special to me.…

When we study Filipino history and learn about the great heroes who helped lead the country to its freedom, we tend to forget that each of these heroes, no matter how great, were people too. Even though they fought, whether outright or silently, almost all their lives for the release of the Philippines from the clutches of its “mother” Spain, they still had the things that made them normal people, like their favorite food.…
