My Childhood

Have you ever thought about a stage of life that you would like to do again? When I was 9 years old, I always told my mom that I wanted to be 15 years old. Every day, I yearned for being a teenager. Now that I am 16 years old, I wish I were the little girl who did not have any worries or reponsabilities. During our lives, we have to pass through many stages since we are born until we die that define our characteristics and personalities. Each one is special and unforgetable. However, I kept lasting beautiful memories about two of them. My childhood and adolescence have taught me that reading is an unknown paradise and dreams have no boundaries.

Firstly, when I was in primary school, the act of reading helped me to discover a fascinated world. I had a teacher who believed that reading was a waste of time. In the same way, she always told us that math is more important than literature. Therefore, I did not feel interested in reading anything for almost one month. Some time later, my teacher was changed and we were intrigated about the new one. Before she told us her name, she gave us a book. Inmediately, Ms. Amy started reading the literary work called "Mi Planta de Naranja Lima". I could not avoid crying with the first two chapters. Since that moment, I realized reading was not a duty or something bad; otherwise, it was part of my life every afternoon where I learned to be

In Richard Rodriguez’s essay, “The Lonely, Good Company of Books”, his purpose seems to be a mixture of an analytical, persuasive, and entertaining view on reading books. This is achieved by the author sharing bits of his life which were intertwined with reading. For example, his first opinions on reading where formed by watching his parents read. Because of this, Mr. Rodriguez considered the context of reading to be more about educating people on a subject, rather than being entertaining. The author grew from a child struggling with reading to a college student accomplishing quite an endeavor by reading a book written by Plato.…

Rodriguez found reading more of a central activity than leisure. It took one on one sessions, personally with the teacher so he can develop a better understanding. For six months he gradually processed communication between the reader and the writer through the books. Therefore, when he read, it started to respond to him on a more personal level. It got to the point that if he read a book and understood it, it was like a friend. If he read a book and did not understand it, he would avoid it.…

Although there is much I can’t recall from my early days of reading, there are some momentous flashbacks. When I was beginning elementary school my parents were very eager to introduce me to doing a great deal of reading, they wanted me to enjoy reading for a while and they succeeded. We lived within walking distance of the public library which allowed us to frequently visit the library to read and check out books. I always remembered the vast shelves of books that seemed like they never had an end. In addition to reading at the library we checked books out to bring home to read, this allowed me to read as much as I wanted to. Correspondent to the amount of reading I did, the more I enjoyed it and improved at reading.…

The first time that I read a book that I truly enjoyed was given to me by my 6th grade reading and writing teacher Mrs. Forristall. Before I had Mrs. Forristall as a teacher, I dreaded going to an english class because I never understood what the point of it all was. My question was always “What is the point of reading if I don’t comprehend it and I don’t like it? My 6th grade teacher changed my perspective on it all. I now love reading books, I love the way that I connect to characters or the author, and I love the way I get into the storyline as a reader, all thanks to Mrs. Forristall.…

We all can't wait to grow up when we're young. The world is filled with all this possibility and wonder. The newness of reading had worn off by junior high. My leisure reading had decreased significantly due to sports and increase in textbook reading assignments made by our teachers. The textbook reading assignments changed how I felt about reading. When in elementary school, reading was learning, but what we were reading were nothing more than stories made up by a publishing company. There was usually a lesson learned at the end of the story. Textbooks didn’t have that same story like nature. They were full of facts and what seemed like complex analogies and theories. Reading was not fun anymore.…

“Why are you even bothering? You’re too stupid to read that, let alone understand it.” This phrase, and many like it, was all I heard from my biological father as I was growing up. I was one of the many unlucky children that grew up with an abusive parent. My biological father hit me, belittled me and much, much more. Yes, I am angry at him, but in a cruel round-a-bout way, my father helped me become the intelligent woman I am today.…

I can not remember when it was exactly that I learned to read, but I can say for sure that reading has always been a passion of mine. Unfortunately, at my house reading was not something praised, for there were even instances where books got thrown away. This due to the fact, that according to my father, “they were useless”. Yet, seeing his disapproval in books did not stop me from reading, but pushed me to try harder in math, what he referred to as “the only relevant subject”, yet my best did not satisfy him. I did not allow this lack of support to bring me down, but instead let it remind me that I was my own motivation. My academics were never something that was monitored or enforced by my…

Growing up, Sedaris had a good life. He had a loving family that supported him and made sure he was well taking care of. Sedaris’ friend, Hugh had a very difficult lifestyle. When Hugh was growing up as a child, he saw things that children should not be forced to witness. Hugh’s class took a field trip to a slaughterhouse one day, where they were treated to a pig’s execution. “…One of the brothers drew a pistol from his back pocket, held it against the animal’s temple, and shot the piglet, execution-style.” (Paragraph 6, page 109) At another occasion, Hugh witnesses a dead man on a telephone pole. “Unlike me, he left the theater two hours later, to find a dead man hanging from a telephone pole at the far end of the unpaved parking lot.” (Paragraph 10, page 110) Hugh was often neglected by this family and spent majority of his adolescence with surrogate parents. Hugh’s life wasn’t the not good at all but Sedaris wanted Hugh’s life.…

I can’t say I fully learned how to read and write when I was younger, it is a process of learning that never ends. There will always be a book that challenges you, a word you don't understand, or a method of writing you haven't tried. The more you read the smaller the world seems, and the larger your head becomes. I came to realise my love and passion for literature. Still to this day I rarely leave the house without my copy of “To Build a Fire” by Jack London. Many of my friends, and the people I grew up with hated reading. I distinctly remember receiving perturbed looks from fellow classmates after stating that I prefered reading “Where the Red Fern Grows” in class then watching the film afterwards. I want for every person I meet, and know to have that same yearning for literature that I have, and I believe that everyone can if they only take the time to practice learning to read and…
