My Cheerleading Journey
I recall being the youngest girl, cheering with others several years older than me, when I began Area Youth Football cheerleading way back at the age of five. I had tried other sports such as soccer and basketball, however they didn't electrify me as cheerleading did. I instantly fell in love with the sport of cheerleading. To this day, I would not even consider changing my commitment to cheerleading, for it has positively influenced my life and taught me countless lessons that will stick with me forever. Throughout my cheerleading journey, I have sparked numerous lifelong friendships. People I would have never expected to become friends with, continue to be a handful of the people who have had the biggest impact on my life in high school.

For the past four years, I’ve been captain of my all-star cheerleading team. My teammates are a diverse group of girls, ranging from ten to seventeen years old. Working with a large age group has made me a more patient person. It takes more time and effort to answer a ten-year-old’s question, than a question from a fifteen or sixteen-year-old. I also must be willing to take my time when explaining parts of routines, because everyone learns and understands at different speeds and levels. Along with this patience, I have developed an ability to comfort people. Younger team members often become frustrated by challenging tumbling passes and stunts, when this happens I intervene. I comfort them by providing much needed aid, not solving the problem…

My partner of eleven years is my greatest cheerleader. When I feel overwhelmed and depressed she gives me encouragement to conquer every challenge I’m faced with. In addition to my partner, another influential person in my life is a co-worker and friend. She fills the maternal role that is absent in my life, by giving me advice, different perspectives, and confidence. My career plays a vital role in my resilience, it gives me cause to wake up and achieve greatness each day. The children I work with inspire me to be a better educator, nurturer, and caregiver. When I am feeling depressed nothing lifts my spirits speedier, than my students. I believe it is a gift to have the availability to focus on constructing children’s strengths, rather than…

In my opinion I think that Cheerleading should be a competitive sport because cheerleaders work as hard as all other sport players do. For example cheerleaders show muscle, athleticism and agility when practicing and cheering at games. Cheerleaders show muscle because they lift other people they throw and stack people on top of other people to make a pyramid. They show Agility because when doing cheers they have to make sharp and quick movements with their hands and their feet. I don’t think that it’s fair that cheerleading isn’t a competitive sport because it doesn’t involve a ball. That is why I think that cheerleading is just as much as a sport than any other…

It teaches the importance of certain life qualities and some lessons to take away. The cheerleaders compete at compititions against other teams. Knowing this information still makes people indecisive in their decision of if cheer qualifies as a sport. According to Eileen Lofrese (Macedo, 2010, para. 10-11), most people can’t decide whether cheer is a sport or not because of its inconsistency. Some schools may only have a cheer team that cheers at games, but other schools have a competitive varsity team. Coach Stevens (personal communication, January 20, 2016) says that she believes cheer is a sport that isn’t fully developed yet. She…

Freshman year my best friend and I made an impulse decision to go to the high school cheer clinic. As a way to make friends and to make both are moms happy, since they were both cheerleaders . After the first day of clinic we were both hooked. Cheerleading to most is full of popular girls that are selfish, snobby, and don't have a sense of morality. But to me and my team we are nothing like that. My team is a mismatched group of girls that found a love in cheering on other sport teams. Spending upwards of 8 hours with the same twenty six girls a week makes anybody to become incredibly close and that is what I have gotten to. We may fight but, with these groups of girls my life would of never been the same. We are all there for eachother no…

In recent history, cheerleading has been primarily female but when cheerleading first began it was primarily male(SooHoo). In the 1950s, female cheerleading became more popular, as did the short skirts and pom-poms.(SooHoo). Cheer has been used to promote positivity and support during sports games through chants and cheers. An experience that has significantly transformed me into the person I am today are the beginning years of my cheer “career.” The first three years were the most difficult that i have faced throughout the nine years I have cheered in total. I was not the most athletic, skinniest, or skillful cheerleader there can be. Also since i was new to the cheer world, as all cheerleaders call it, I didn't have as many friends. As time went on I slowly started to get the hang of things and what went on with this new sport. My coaches always punished me in everything I did. I had to prove myself to everyone that I can be just like them and nothing less.…

At a normal summer camp, a few dozen fifteen-year-old girls wouldn’t be told to spend a night alone in the woods. Camp Cheerio isn’t a normal summer camp. I’ve been going to Camp Cheerio every summer since I was eight years old, and I’ve loved every second of being there. The summer before sophomore year of high school was the last year that I could be a camper. Part of being in your last year as a camper is doing CREW. The acronym “CREW” stands for Courage, Responsibility, Enthusiasm, and Worth. In CREW all of the last year campers do things such as team building, being a counselor for a day, hiking eleven miles to and from Stone Mountain, and more. However, the most significant part of CREW was doing Solo Night. During Solo Night, each…
