Does being alone need to feel lonely? The song My blue Bucket of gold describes the desperation of the speaker to love and be loved back. The need to love comes from the feeling of loneliness.
The title “My blue bucket of gold” represents his joy and love hidden behind a wall of sadness and self hatred. Although the speaker has a melancholic heart or “blue bucket” he has affection and worthiness whitin for his heart is made “of gold”. A golden heart shows his ability to make someone feel special and a strong fiber. In addition, he has love to give but no one to give it to. When Sufjan sings “Friend the fables delight me” he is describing the cliche love stories he desires for his life. On the other hand he also states “Once the myth has been told has been told the lens deformes it as lighting” which represents loss of hope. The lens he sings about is a portrayal of time and people who tell mythical fairy tale stories. The lighting mentioned characterises the unachievable in his eyes, after all his suffering he does not believe in real love.
