My Ambition
"Every one of you should have an ambition in life. Once you have got one, build a strong base and work your way to that ambition," lectured Mrs. Johnson as she walked back and forth in the front of the room. I could hear a faint snore in the back of the room. Everyone was watching the clock tick towards the end of the period. She just went on and on about setting goals. I t was boring beyond reason. I have already heard all this junk in my past years of school. Even watching a fly sounded much more appealing.

Finally after what felt like a century, the bell rang. I stampeded through the door way along with many other students. Weaving through students and teachers I thought to myself, "Maybe there is a point in having goals. Hmmmm. Well my ambition is to make the school's basketball team. I will be a great inside player since a lot of people consider me as a Sears Tower on legs. Now how can I build a strong base? I can play outside almost everyday to work on my shooting and my ball handling skills. Wait. What am I talking about? I cannot make the team just because I want to. In the past I didn't make the team because I broke my wrist. Well I guess it doesn't hurt to try. I can play some games to improve my teamwork abilities and my defense. Maybe I can sign up for a couple of camps to improve my techniques and get some tips."

I sprinted home so I could spill my ideas to my parents. They totally agreed with me. So I sat down with them and decided which camps I can sign up for. I wanted the Power Moves Camp at the Bulls Trading Academy. It would definitely improve my ball handling and help me go up strong to the basket. Then we signed me up for a camp at my new high school, Naperville North High School, so I could get to know the coach and know what he is looking for. He will also get to know me. I arranged to have a basketball game every other day with my friend to develop my defensive skills. The other days when I don't play with him I will play by myself. All these ideas and plans will help me reach my ambition of playing for my school's basketball team.

Henry David Thoreau once wrote, "If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." What he is saying is that if you have a dream or an ambition, you should pursue it. Now build a strong foundation under them so that the dreams do not collapse. Building a strong foundation represents creating a roadmap to follow in order to achieve your ambition or goal.

I was always decent but never quite lived to expectations. When I turned 12 years old, I was diagnosed with Type 3 scoliosis, which limited not only my quickness but my ability to twist and run normally. The basketball dynasty was coming to an end as I had lost a lot of athleticism. I was always on the middle team, not very good, not very bad, but I always tried new moves; which made me hard to guard. I finally quit all sports because my back couldn’t handle the stress, and I wasn’t prepared to go into surgery. One day as I was watching…

I was always interested in basketball, but I never knew the proper rules for it. That didn’t stop me though. I practiced everyday and I would learn the rules for basketball. Eventually I came to a conclusion that I was going to try out for AAU basketball. I was having doubts in my mind about trying out though, because I was scared I wasn’t talented enough. So I had to practice a lot before the tryout till I was satisfied with my skills and what not. The tryout wasn’t extremely hard but it was tiring. The only way I knew I could make the team is if I keep up with the players. It wasn’t too hard and I just had to prove individually that I was capable of playing with this team. At the end of the…

We waited in the gym for about 4 hours, then I got hungry. I walked through the dark hallway to use the vending machine. After I got my honey bun, I walked around to the field house to see if they posted the team. They did, 14 id numbers on one sheet of paper. I looked up and down the list multiple times looking for my id number and unfortunately it wasn’t on there. My heart was broken and I was so confused. I walked home teary-eyed and when I arrived home I cried my eyes out. After that I didn’t play basketball for a whole week, which I had never done. After that week I got back in the gym, and kept playing every day as usual. I went to all of their games because I loved the sport and I wanted to support my friends. After the season ended everything went back to normal, we kept going to the YMCA every day. Now school has ended and summer league starts. Coach put me on Jr. Varsity just too test my skills and the first game, it was the best game of my life. I dunked the ball on a fast break and I couldn’t miss. I was the star player and that showed coach I was better so he put me on varsity. All in all I am just saying never give up and work as hard as you can, it will pay…

I decided to advocate to the coach about my involvement in the practices as a player. As I walked into the hot and humid office of the coach, I waited until he was not as busy with his work. As the fan turned, he finally stopped what he was doing, “What’s up, Ariana?” the coach voiced. I explained my aspirations to play basketball. As I spoke, I watched his face, trying to get a sense of what he was thinking. After I stopped talking, I waited for his answer. He moved around as if it would help him figure out what to say when he knew his answer was…

I was exhausted and every muscle in my body ached. I watched others play but could never figure out what I was doing wrong. The worst part was that I knew others were watching me and couldn’t believe I was even trying to play basketball. The whispers I had heard earlier encouraging me to try something new soon became inner voices of doubt telling me that I was the slowest and most uncoordinated player to ever set foot on the court. I began to think of excuses I could give my coach to withdraw from the tryout list. That is when my friend Tommy approached me. He is an elite athlete and could do almost anything with a basketball. He volunteered to teach me anything I needed to know about basketball. At first, I was hesitant because I did not want his pity or want to waste his time. But then I thought about the kind of friend Tommy was for even offering and my attitude changed. He was not the kind of person to judge me, and I knew his intentions were always sincere. For the next two months, he patiently taught me how to handle the ball and to move my feet. We worked on my shot every day and dribbled the ball until I couldn’t feel my arms. I was nowhere near the peak as far as basketball skills go, but I had at least started the climb with Tommy’s help. The day of tryouts finally arrived; I was so nervous that I started dripping sweat before I even arrived at the gym. Tommy gave me a fist bump and wished me…

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

“It’s not about being the best, it’s about being better than you were.” In 6th grade, my dad took me to a new basketball team tryouts. I was sitting in my room one day. When suddenly, I heard my dad call my name. “Mckenzie, do you want to tryout for an AAU basketball team, The Truth Basketball?” Obviously, I had agreed, then he told me that the tryouts were that night. Suddenly, right after he told me, I started to practice until we had to leave. Now, we had arrived at the gym, I was freaking out. I could hear all the basketball’s pounding and the sound it makes when the net swooshes. Overall, I was so nervous.…

Ever since I could walk, basketball was my life. I played it all year round and enjoyed every second. I played on an elite, national AAU basketball team and received a couple collegiate offers. So finally when it came time for varsity basketball, I was ready to play at that next level. When tryouts rolled around, it was all I could think of. Basketball consumed my thoughts. On the last day of tryouts, when I got called into a little white room for a one-on-one talk with my new head coach, all I could think about is what position I will be playing throughout the season. But when my basketball coach said, “You didn’t make this year’s girls basketball team,” I was in disbelief. He later stung me with the statement, “I thought you would be crying more,” which is when my emotions and thoughts changed. At first, my friends and family supported me as I faced a setback in my life. But then, as time went on, society went back to their daily routine, unaware of the thoughts going through my head. This experience changed me and how I look at every situation. It inspired me to think differently when adversity hits. Eventually, I tried new things like indoor lacrosse, skiing, became an officer in DECA, and continued to play AAU and intramural basketball. I trusted my Christian faith and realized He does have a plan and purpose for every individual. From November 19, 2012, I had two choices: to move on or dwell on the situation. I choose to change my thoughts and my perspective and plan for the future.…

After 3 strenuous days of basketball tryouts at West middle school, tensions rose dramatically as the group of middle school student athletes I was a part of competed belligerently for the disproportionate amount of 13 available spots. With over 150 kids participating, it was inevitable there would be an ample amount of heartbreak in the gym. As Coach Fonseca called the group over to center court, you could not help but feel the tension in the entire gym, every kid’s eyes filled with anxiety as each drop of sweat slowly trickled down from their bodies. As coach read down the list, I realized my chances were diminishing. Soon the list was complete and I, along with many other students headed out the gym, heads down.…

The summer of my junior year I decided to go to these things called shootouts, they are like show cases for prospective college athletes. After one shoot out , my dad and I got home and had a number of emails from colleges telling me about what they saw in me and if I would like to play for them. Going into my senior year I knew it was going to be rough with my dad now having a head coaching job at my school. Again, same as my junior year, I didn’t play much at all, but when I did I made a difference on the court to try and prove a point to my coach, teammates, and all the parents who thought I was just on the team because of my dad. By the end of my senior year, I had gotten 10 letters varying from D2 and D3 colleges asking me to come play for them, this gave me the biggest boost in my life, the only thing I wanted to do was shove them in the faces of my coaches, teammates, and the other parents. My parents told me that wouldn’t be a good idea, and the funny thing is I am the only one of my senior class on that team that is playing basketball in college. If it wasn’t for my parents always being there and being honest with me, I probably wouldn’t be where I’m at…

As ninth grade approached, I had gained a lot of confidence from a summer of constant training. Despite this newfound confidence, my ninth grade Junior Varsity season was very difficult for me. Though I felt I was working hard in practice, I was only playing one to two minutes at the end of every game. In addition, my coach would only allow me to take one or two shots per game, which, coupled with the enormous pressure I put on myself to succeed, I missed every single time. During this season, I frequently contemplated giving up basketball because I felt all the hours I had practiced amounted to nothing, and I felt more like a detriment to the team than a benefit. However, I soon realized that I loved the sport too much to allow myself to give up, and took it as a personal mission to become a better player so that I could help the team.…

My life was over. As my mother tried to console me she said I should look at other teams, but there were no other teams for me. I did not play any basketball at all in the summer going into my freshman year of high school. However I did decide to tryout for my school’s basketball team. I went into tryouts pretty confident, but after the first three days, when I had not been called to play on the varsity court, my confidence was at an all time low. I made the team, but not varsity and there were those same words echoing,”try again”. After those events, I had finally come to terms with the fact that college basketball was not an option for me. How could I play college basketball if that was my attitude when I failed? Is that how I would react if I were benched by a coach? I thought about these questions for a long time and came to my final decision about playing in college. When I got that email from Oshkosh Elite I should have been enraged and steam should have been blowing out from my nose and ears, and I should have got on a team and started working on my game like they said. Instead, I took the summer off and sat on the couch, moping about how I did not make the…
