Must Women Adopt Male Characteristics T
Must women adopt male characteristics to succeed?
Introduction
Looking back at the historical development of corporations and firms, one can find that these organizations are once created by men (Rao et. Al, 1999). Nowadays, more and more women become very successful in the organizations and they work hard to act at the high management levels in the corporations. In spite of it, the proportion of women leaders in the organizations is relatively low than men leaders. Then it has emerged a statement that “women must adopt male characteristics to succeed. The purpose of his report is to analyze “must women adopt male characteristics to succeed?”

Discussion on Women Reality
Before talking about women success in the organizations, it is necessary to define the current reality for women in the corporations and society. In 1970s, feminist movement has largely improved the social positions of women both outside and within the working environment (Turner, 2003). In spite of it, women also keep the disadvantaged sex in the corporations or firms because sometimes it is difficult for women to balance work-life issues (Acker,, 1990). Today, more and more women can work in the organizations and they are given more opportunities to participate in many managerial occupations. Related evidence also shows that women have recently been advanced to senior positions in large organizations (Kawakami; White and Langer, 2000). Nevertheless, the number of female top-rank directors remains unproportionately low. In addition, related institutions have made surveyed that 96% of executives in the world corporations are male (Powell and Graves, 2003). Therefore, women reality for success is that the proportion for women leaders is low.

Argument about For or Against the adoption of Male Characteristics for Women
Although small proportion for women to success in the organizations, it is also worth considering why they can succeed. In my opinion, women must not adopt male characteristics to

In her article “Women are better bosses than men”, according to a survey conducted showing that the majority of men do not mind having women as their bosses, Mary Schnack discusses the reasons behind the idea of women managers becoming more acceptable according to their male counterparts. Referring to Natasha Josefwitz’s opinion on the previous topic, Schnack quotes Josefwitz’s reasons behind the latter’s assertion, and then supports them with further information. Schnack then presents a counter-argument which is the criticism of women’s “open door” policy and refutes it by stating the advantages of following such a method.…

The role of women in the United States has changed dramatically in the last 50 years. The proportion of women attending college, matriculating from graduate schools, and obtaining doctorate degrees has increased dramatically. No longer are women associated with low expectations both in education and the workforce. Women now seek and receive the highest leadership roles in education, professions, and business. For example, according to Laff (2006), in the banking industry women holds several management positions and in human resource management. Given these significant increases in women-owned business and upper-level management position in and organization setting, one might conclude that this migration of women towards leadership roles has been successful in management positions.…

Although many women have overcome sexist stereotypes in the workforce and have been able to move up the job ladder. According to a Washington Post article, Why there are so many female managers but so few CEOs it stated that “women hold 50 percent of middle management positions. But that is as far as equality extends, as less than 5 percent of chief executives of publicly listed companies in OECD countries are women and just 2.8 percent in the European Union.” Even though many women have accomplished great success within their career. Statistical evidence show that only a few of them have been able to bust through the glass ceiling phenomenon. There are many plausible explanation for the lack of gender diversity in higher level positions.Overall, most of the explanations correlates with our society having a gender preference.Which results in men not only being the “breadwinners” for the household ,but the dominant figures in the workforce. In society men have a hard time taking orders from women and hearing their opinions because we still live in an androcentric society ,which focuses on the interest of men than women. Therefore, our cultural norms reflect from us living in a patriarchal society. For example, men are depicted as strong and authoritative leaders, which make them a great asset to their…

Scholars of management, politics, history and psychology have attempted all best to identify the essential part of leadership since classical times In last decade, the female leadership has attracted increasing attention in academic circles since in business practice there has emerged a new era for female leaders (Sharpe, R., 2000; Eagly, A. H. &Carli, L.L., 2003). Women has much potential to play more important role in firms in particular the leading position (Alvesson, M., & Billing, Y. D., 1992; Hefferman, 2002). A key question for this issue is the reason why one firm hire a woman is that she is a woman or she really has the competitive advantage. Now as a comparatively new endeavor this essay focuses on the study of the relationship between women and leadership. More Specifically, the essay is to examine the arguments to explain why female leadership received so little attention is the past, to show the difference between male and female power, therefore to demonstrate the female leadership advantage and disadvantage of which the aim is to use the knowledge derived from the study of female leadership to improve our understanding of leadership and our management behavior.…

    Leadership Stereotypes

Another strategy we can use is reverse the negative connotations of the stereotype where women are found to think about others than themselves, such as thinking and taking care of the kids, the husband, and the parents much more than men. They can be a great asset to a company where they are focused more on improving the companies, employees, and customers satisfied. The environment and culture of the organization definitely seem to play a role in the stereotype in which men or women leaders were more effective. For example, in a male dominated organization like the military or the government, men excelled more, as masculine traits are needed. In contrast, women excelled in areas such as education and social services where it has more of a ‘feminine’ setting. We can also deconstruct the meaning of the stereotype and explode the myths, which keep women stuck in a particular place or level by constantly challenging them through the media plus with research studies and updating with facts. Another great strategy is to push gender balance where there needs to be a close even amount of men and women in a work area. Creating policies such as for every male a company hires, a woman also needs to be hired next balancing the ratio of the company representing close to a fifty-fifty of men and…

Having low representation of women is concerning due to the fact that women are as equally qualified as their male colleagues in both education and experience. This can be seen through the overall performance of the companies that have a strong female presence amongst their board members. In 2009, the Cranfield School of Management found that only “12.2% of directors of the FTSE 100 companies were women” (Sealy, Vinnicombe, Doldor 15). However, studies show that when women are represented on boards they yield “42% higher returns in sales, 66% higher return on invested capital, and 53% higher return on equity” than their rival companies (“Women on Boards” 7). This increase in performance is directly proportional to the fact that women have similar skill sets to that of men. In the field of education, women account “for approximately six out of every ten university graduates” graduating from universities in Europe and America (“Women on Boards” 9). Women are consistently proving their ability to succeed in all career paths. Not allowing such women to participate side by side with their male colleagues on boards is a disservice to the company as a whole.…

Today women fulfil 2/3 of all the work in the world, but only earn 10% of the salaries. Women stand for half the food production, but only own 1% of the cultivable land. Half of the student graduates are women. They get good grades and they constitute for almost half of the qualified people in the labor market. Even though, the unemployment rate for women is a lot higher than for men.i In many countries it is the culture of the people or the firm culture that makes it difficult for educated, skilled women to obtain work that corresponds with their resources. During the economic crisis more women than men in the UK lost their jobs. This is because mostly women are working in the sectors that had a lot of cut back, such as the public sector which obtain 65% woman.ii There is a big distinction between women obtaining positions in the upmost layers of an organization than men. So is it possible to change an organizational culture to value and promote gender equity? In all, can a culture which is male dominant change? Some cultures are more gender equal, and others less. Even though in general when people shall define what a good leader is, almost all the attributes will be of male characteristics.…

You get a somewhat different picture if you ask followers and leaders about male and female leaders. They notice differences that are in line with stereotypes about men and women, reporting that female leaders are more nurturing, empathic, and responsive than male leaders, but they will also report the negative side (e.g., moody). Male leaders, on the other hand, are perceived to be more action-oriented and more focused on tasks. As a Catalyst study concludes that according to leaders and followers in the workplace, "women leaders take care, men leaders take charge." Realize, however, that this involves people's perceptions of leaders, colored by stereotypes and expectations.…
