Wicked
The Wicked is concern about growth story of Elphaba. She is the daughter of the governor; however, she was unfortunately born in green, and gets no support from her father. Her sister Nessarose has been disabled in a wheelchair under the full love of her father. They came to the school, met the popular white Galinda and many students, so many wonderful stories happened. This is the first experience of appreciating the musical, the feeling is different from on the screen. The decoration and layout are stereo, many scenes are beautiful and magical. Especially, the first scene that finally Elphaba flew into the heaven with the broom and dressed up like smoke was so shocked.
The Wicked is directed by an American famous actor and director Joe Mantello. He has won numerous awards, including two Tony for Best Director, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Drama Desk. The melody of general musical often contains a tune and many variations in each song. However, the tune in the theatre is more independent. Many songs are well known in the Wicked. No one mourns the wicked is the first song expressing strong feelings and causing curiosity of the audience. What’s this feeling and Popular are two funny songs which bring us happiness and sounds of laughter. I like the song I am not pretty girl most because I think it is the special one for young girls’ love and writes about the heart sound. And No good deed gravity defying reflects the personality of the green witches in big changes. This song is important because it influences the storyline of the whole play. For good is related to the blond and green hair witches to different paths before touching farewell. Both men and women would like this

The performing arts allow one to become another person and indulge in different parts of his personality. On stage, actors can explore key themes and issues within humanity. However, some populations, such as women, feel that their emotional struggles and triumphs are often secondary or, worse yet, absent from the plot entirely. In numerous shows, the female leading role serves solely as the beautiful love interest, while the plot centers around the leading male’s conflicts. Genevieve Flati, a seasoned performer and writer with over 23 years of experience, decided to create the musical revue “(Wo)men Rule Broadway” with the help of musical director Kelly Rogers to portray these human experiences from a woman’s perspective. Flati says, “Our…

The item I chose to do was my clarinet as my object and the Cittern as my object from The Met. I have chosen these two objects, because they have a lot in common as they are both musical instruments. The cittern was made roughly in 1685 made by German man, Joachim Tielke. The material used to make this was cypress, ivory, ebony, parchment, and brass. The cittern is 24 ⅞ in by 9 5/16 in. Also, this was made in Hamburg, Germany, so it is a german instrument. This was used to play music during church services and ceremonies such as weddings and funerals. But a lot of aristocrats played this, and then become more popular between the sixteenth and seventeenth century. It is mainly a folk instrument, which why it was then created into what we call…

Problems between composers and the general public have been mounting for over one hundred years. As advanced music rapidly changes, the public seemingly fails to posses the musical knowledge necessary to appreciate modern works of contemporary music. In 1958, Milton Babbitt examined this relationship in a piece entitled “Who Cares if You Listen?” In the article, Babbitt asses the public’s feelings on “advanced” music and concludes that it should not concern composers if their work doesn’t get an audience beyond a few colleagues. Musical masterpieces including Babbitt’s Semi Simple Variations and Stockhausen’s Gesang der Jünglinge exemplify why this is the case. Despite efforts to reach out to the public by composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki, the divide that separates these entities is even greater today.…

The song mentions that no one can stop him, and that is what Macbeth thinks. Also, the song is portraying confidence that no one will get in his way. A characteristic of Macbeth is confidence. The musical opened up like any other, with all the cast on stage dancing, and us getting an idea of who they are. We get an idea of the background from the musical piece the narrator sings, "Try to Remember" This sets the mood, and gives us a better understanding about who the characters are, and about the feud between the fathers. The second piece, "Much More", gives us an idea about the Luisa. This piece reveals her characteristics, and that inner crazy she has. The piece after that, "Metaphor", tells us not much about…

On March 5th 2017, I attended the production of Bonnie and Clyde the Musical at the Albert L. Jeffers Theatre at the Univerisity of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Having been already familiar with the basic premise of the story of some of the two most notorious criminals in the history of the United States, I was curious to see how the lives of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrel were reimagined by this musical. In this production of the show, I was pleased to find that the UTRGV theatre department gave a profound level depth to the musical by Ivan Menchell, as they guided me through the story of how the son of a farmer and a young waitress fell in love with each other, and out of favor with the law. UTRGV’s…

    Into The Woods

Before Grimm, before Supernatural, and even before Wicked, there was one “reimagining of classic fairy tales with interwoven plots and grey scale characters” and that was Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim uses four familiar stories to set the scene for his overarching plot allowing him to concentrate on jokes and creating new relationships between old characters. He also uses familiar characters in ways that blend categories. Through much of act one every character is stock through and through, yet by the end of the play our dashing prince charming has become an unapologetic adulterer, and the wicked old witch becomes an anti-hero. In addition to plot and character Sondheim pays special attention to his musical numbers; just from the first number we understand the characters relationships to one another, their motivations (having children, going to the festival, visiting grandma, and not starving), and we’re introduced to the play’s key metaphor: the woods. While these aspects were vital to the performances success I will be concentrating on the diction and acting.…
