What music means to me, and the type of music I enjoy listening to
There are many kinds of music I listen to, and to each kind it fits a mood. A heavy rock ballad suits my mood when am either angry or needing an energetic boost. A fast paced punk rock track makes my day anytime. It is something I need like oxygen, and food. The songs that have memories, and the songs that have the most meaning, are the tunes I don't mind listening to when the mood suites. I enjoy a variety of music in my life to listen to, and each song affects me a different way.

Heavy rock is a type of music I enjoy listening to when I feel angry, or when I need a boost of energy. When I am angry or upset I like to listen to the song "In This River" by Black Label Society. It is a great mellow song to listen to when I am troubled, and helps me think. It was also dedicated to Dimebag Darrel after his death. When I need a boost of energy I play the tune "Before I Forget" by Slipknot. The song to me means that you should be true to self, and remember your roots of where you came from, and the only one that matters is yourself.

Punk rock is a type of music I breathe. It is a type of music that I cannot live without. Many punk rock songs reveal things of every day life. When I wake up in the morning and take my shower I have punk rock music in my CD player. To me it makes my day way better. The tune preformed by Yellowcard, "Ocean Avenue" has always been one of my favorites. To me the song is about a relationship that ended because someone moved far away to pursue his or her career. I like it because it is a great jam to liven up my morning. Another tune that has a catchy riff is "Nth Degree" by Morningwood. They are a new band that many people haven't heard about. The only reason I like this song is because it has a great beat, and a catchy tune.

There are a few songs that when I hear memories come back to me. Everybody has tunes that remind him or her of something. For me there are songs that bring back bad memories, and there are songs that bring back great memories that I wish I could relive. The song "Only One" by Yellowcard brings back sad memories of having problems in a relationship, and the guy wanting to fix things because he really loves me, but I left. I was too occupied with other things to care, and he just gave up and ended things with me. A popular tune that is by Nickleback, it is called "How You Remind Me." This song has meaning for me because when a bunch of my friends and I were hanging out, I called the radio station and had it dedicated to us. So from this day on every time I hear this song it will remind of the good times.

I have explained my favorite type of music, and tunes that remind me of good and bad memories. I am sure you have songs that have meaning to you and when you hear it, it induces a mood. I enjoy a variety of music in my life, and each song I hear, even if I have never heard it before, each song affects me a different way.

Figured bass is a musical notation using numbers to indicate chords, intervals, and other aspects in relation to the bass note of the music and basso continuo is the harmony of the music itself. Rock for me has stronger messages than the traditional Rock and Roll format; you see a lot of repetitive messages in the early 50’s and 60’s when it came to rock and roll music. Rock and Roll was basically telling stories about past experiences about sex or drugs or music that you couldn’t forget because the chorus was catchy. Rock, as stated before is a subculture of rock but for me with Dylan being an example had a lot of raw emotions infused into it. When I think about Rock and Roll I image sex, or to procreate without intention of reproducing, partying without consequences. Rock music is sort of like a political party, encouraging rebellion, power or to have strength within one’s self. Bob Dylan, is an example of all of these things, while listening to his music I got a sense of urgency and emotion. He made you feel that you belonged to a community larger than yourself; he himself encouraged diversity with the world and even with himself. He crystallized the notion of social protest as a cultural pursuit for a…

“Lost your Head Blues” was written and performed by Bessie smith, known as the “Empress of the Blues.” She lived from 1894-1937. The songs Smith sang along with her performances allowed her the opportunity to become popular in the 1920’s. While the songs she sang were revolved around her life, and not that of the community, many folks said that the stories were relatable to them. “Lost Your Head Blues” in particular was a sad love song that became a popular hit in the 1920’s, specifically 1926. Due to how the man was treating her with such disrespect, Smith sings about leaving the man she loves. Her music was considered to be classical blues based on the African American blues genre. Long before Smith’s time, this type of music with its sad and negative tone was already being played. For instance, “Flow My Tears” was written around the 1600’s which was during the Renaissance period. This was considered popular during Shakespeare’s time. It was produced by John Downland, who was a well-known English composer in Europe. He lived from 1563-1626. It was derived from a poem perhaps previously written by Downland. Downland is well-known for his pieces which represent sadness. In that, it portrays one’s happiness coming to an end—similarly to that of “Lost Your Head Blues.”…

Punk rock was a message to society that all was not well and all were not equal. And this appealed to people as they could connect and relate to the music. Thus turning to the music as an outlet for their anger. Punk subculture then became a new way of life. The people in it worshipped nihilism as the protest that it was easier to swallow nihilism than face the truth.…

A few weeks ago I attended a recital/concert in the UMHB auditorium performed by the Waco orchestra (I think that’s who it was). At first when I got there, I wasn’t paying attention because I was bored and knew I was only there to get my fine arts experience credit. After about two songs, I remembered that I was in Music Appreciation and some of the songs they were playing, I heard in class before. I began to tune into to certain instruments and listen to their unique sound and what significant part they played in the song. I also began to realize that I was catching on to some of the patterns in the melody, for example ABBABBA. If I had never been in the music appreciation class I wouldn’t have done any of those things, but it’s just ironic that when you take a class like this, you find yourself paying attention to certain things in music that you never would have found yourself doing prior to the fact. One thing that really interested me was that in one song, a woman who was playing the trumpet had her own solo part. For one, I honestly didn’t expect her to be playing a trumpet, as bad as that sounds. Secondly, I didn’t expect her to be as good as she was. I was in shock at some of the notes she was hitting, and I admit that I was pretty impressed. I played the trombone in middle school so of course I had to watch the trombone players while reminiscing that I used to be the one up there doing that, I was pretty good. After not playing for so long, I forgot the notes and the certain places you slide the horn to make a certain note. Sometimes I wish that I could still play because I believe that being able to play an instrument is a beautiful talent. I would definitely go to another musical now because it’s fun when you’re there to listen and admire, instead of just being there because you have to. When you’re actually involved with the concert, it makes being there a lot more fun and makes you appreciate the work and practice that was done to…

I listen to music every day of my life. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep. My current mood determines what type of music I listen to. For example, in the morning, I like to start my day off with something slow and calm. This usually jazz music with its soft and mellow tones. Then later in the day, I prefer to listen to rap music. It really helps me get excited. This helps me when I am in the gym, especially the sound of the loud bass and tones. I tend to calm down after a long day of activities. I sooth my mood with slow, mellow, and calm music. This really helps my body and mind relax after a long day of work. In conclusion, Jazz, Rap, and R&B are very powerful different types of music, each having its own different style and background.…

There are some variations or adaptation of Rock and Roll and teenagers as well of adults enjoy this genre of music. I started to listen to Rock and Roll when I was in Junior High School. Rock and Roll makes feel happier, more active and full of energy. When I listen to this music, my mood becomes livelier and happier. Rock and Roll is the music I listen too when I have any spare time. I tune the radio to 94.5FM when I listen to music. FM94.5 plays a variety of Rock and Roll all day long for seven days a week. I also like to use YouTube to listen to Rock and Roll. The videos on YouTube are inspiring. I find it very interesting to watch the instruments they use to play the music and the dance moves. I noticed that African Americans dance very nice and the Rock and Roll artists borrowed some of their dance moves. I am a conservative person and do not feel drawn to the cloth and shoe fashion that this artists and actors use. I like how I dress and how I style my own hair. I do like how the Rock and Roll fashion looks on other people, but I just do not feel comfortable changing my dress…

The piece of music that really attracts my attention these days is the song named We Own It. I first heard this piece of music when I was sitting in the cinema and watching Fast and Furious 6 on Monday night. It is one of the official soundtracks of the film, owned by Wiz Khalifa. What really captured my attention, at the very beginning, was its rhythm. I felt really excited and I was kind of obsessed with it. Therefore, I did some research about this piece of soundtrack after I finished the movie. I found it on YouTube and literally played it for a whole afternoon. This song is awesome.…

I like the band Rise Against because they play a variation of music. Some songs are fast and upbeat, others slow and depressing. One of my favorite songs of theirs is "State of the Union". The song is very political and almost leans toward heavy metal. "State of the union address, reads war torn country still a mess, the words: power, death and distorted truth, are read between the lines of red whit and blue." I like a fact that a band can make a statement, no matter how…
