“Be the Manager” Essay 1

As the new manager of a major clothing store that is currently facing a crisis, it is my job to answer, resolve, and communicate with my fellow managers and employees. I have analyzed what has happened to the task environment of this store; low sales and poor customer service. With sales dropping to a mere 30% due to competition and supply, I have devised a program that will help the managers, employees, and most importantly the store. Surveyed customers said that our store wasn’t keeping up with changing fashion as well as new trends. To better construe this issue I have set training sessions for our purchasing managers giving them an insight on what to look for when contacting suppliers and to be less risk averse. These sessions and classes will help our PM’s get familiar with current fashion trends and how to keep up with this fast pace economy. We have been in contact with the same suppliers for quite a while which has probably become why this store’s inventory is being viewed by customers as not in style. To help resolve this problem, I have split the purchasing managers into two categories. Half of the PM’s will focus mainly on keeping all clothing, accessories, etc up to date. The other half will be set to find and be more progressive when selecting new suppliers. By doing so, I wish to see improvement in sales and positive customer feedback. Furthermore, there has been an issue with the stores customer service and many customers have responded saying that there should be a new form and changes should occur. To assist this matter, I have set up biweekly meetings discussing current issues and ways on how to respond to any questions, problems, and complaints when in contact with a customer.     “Lost your Head Blues” was written and performed by Bessie smith, known as the “Empress of the Blues.” She lived from 1894-1937. The songs Smith sang along with her performances allowed her the opportunity to become popular in the 1920’s. While the songs she sang were revolved around her life, and not that of the community, many folks said that the stories were relatable to them. “Lost Your Head Blues” in particular was a sad love song that became a popular hit in the 1920’s, specifically 1926. It was produced by John Downland, who was a well-known English composer in Europe. He lived from 1563-1626. It was derived from a poem perhaps previously written by Downland.     A few weeks ago I attended a recital/concert in the UMHB auditorium performed by the Waco orchestra (I think that’s who it was). At first when I got there, I wasn’t paying attention because I was bored and knew I was only there to get my fine arts experience credit. After about two songs, I remembered that I was in Music Appreciation and some of the songs they were playing, I heard in class before. I began to tune into to certain instruments and listen to their unique sound and what significant part they played in the song. I also began to realize that I was catching on to some of the patterns in the melody, for example ABBABBA. If I had never been in the music appreciation class I wouldn’t have done any of those things, but it’s just ironic that when you take a class like this, you find yourself paying attention to certain things in music that you never would have found yourself doing prior to the fact. One thing that really interested me was that in one song, a woman who was playing the trumpet had her own solo part. For one, I honestly didn’t expect her to be playing a trumpet, as bad as that sounds. Secondly, I didn’t expect her to be as good as she was. I was in shock at some of the notes she was hitting, and I admit that I was pretty impressed. I played the trombone in middle school so of course I had to watch the trombone players while reminiscing that I used to be the one up there doing that, I was pretty good. After not playing for so long, I forgot the notes and the certain places you slide the horn to make a certain note. Sometimes I wish that I could still play because I believe that being able to play an instrument is a beautiful talent. I would definitely go to another musical now because it’s fun when you’re there to listen and admire, instead of just being there because you have to. When you’re actually involved with the concert, it makes being there a lot more fun and makes you appreciate the work and practice that was done to…

Marcello Bottoli had mixed feelings about the whole issue. On the one hand, close to perfect quality was critical in a business where customers might be paying up to €1000 for a pair of shoes and €3000 for a handbag, and he felt very reluctant to disrupt Louis Vuitton’s traditional and proven manufacturing process.
