“Lost your Head Blues” was written and performed by Bessie smith, known as the “Empress of the Blues.” She lived from 1894-1937. The songs Smith sang along with her performances allowed her the opportunity to become popular in the 1920’s. While the songs she sang were revolved around her life, and not that of the community, many folks said that the stories were relatable to them. “Lost Your Head Blues” in particular was a sad love song that became a popular hit in the 1920’s, specifically 1926. Due to how the man was treating her with such disrespect, Smith sings about leaving the man she loves. Her music was considered to be classical blues based on the African American blues genre. Long before Smith’s time, this type of music with its sad and negative tone was already being played. For instance, “Flow My Tears” was written around the 1600’s which was during the Renaissance period. This was considered popular during Shakespeare’s time. It was produced by John Downland, who was a well-known English composer in Europe. He lived from 1563-1626. It was derived from a poem perhaps previously written by Downland. Downland is well-known for his pieces which represent sadness. In that, it portrays one’s happiness coming to an end—similarly to that of “Lost Your Head Blues.”…

The connection between politics and music can sometimes be rather discreet, and a lot of songwriters today include many messages in their song lyrics which would appear subliminal until analysed. Political issues are expressed in music and I believe this is because music is one of the most effective ways to reach out to people, as not everyone watches the news or picks up a newspaper. Because popular musicians have such a large fan base and a strong influential impact on their fans, it would work effectively to openly promote and support political candidates as well as particular causes, or write their music in order to rebel against them. A great example of this is the song 'if I was president' by Wycliffe jean, this song was inspired by conspiracy theory, because it was believed that unnecessary amounts of money has been spent on the war and the president just sits back and looks at what is happening, Wycliffe believes that every time somebody comes along to try and present the truth, they'd be ‘assassinated’. He wrote this song and put himself in the president's position, believing that he himself would be assassinated the same as martin Luther King and John F Kennedy did. Wycliffe believes that the 'children' should be told the truth, and everyone should strive to be the president. In 2008, will I am produced two video's which were made in order to make America support the work of Barrack Obama. The song 'we are the ones' features people from different walks of life explaining what they would like to change about the earth. One example is 'I think it's time to change, I want a better future for my children' after each person gives an opinion. All of the people featured in the video recite Obama's name. This video and the video 'yes we can' became very popular with over 28 million views between them. ‘Will.i.am didn't set out to make history. In fact, says the Black Eyed Peas front man, he's not even…

The performance of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Ebenezer Baptist Church was amazing. The performance taught me that there is a difference between listening to an orchestra play on TV versus watching them life. the life experiencing will always stick to your memory because you were actually there to experience the feeling. I really enjoyed it. The show made me enjoy and appreciate classical music. It was en experiencing I will never forget. from the seating arrangements to knowing the appropriate time to clap. it was awesome. The four piece program was conducted by Thomas Wilkins. Violist Drew Forde and violinist Gareth Johnson were among the spotlights in the program. The venue was a great place to perform at because the sound was so mellow and you could clearly hear everything that was played. The timing of the event was at night which was great too because the types of music the band played were the kinds you would most likely hear or listen to at night time except for one.…

Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture was a very interesting song; there were many changes through out the piece. It started out sounding like a battle symphony where Tchaikovsky used the instruments to make a choppy sound, which reminded me of a march, as well as gun sounds. He has a great use of crescendo at the beginning. Along with increasing the sound level he also increases the tempo and brings the piece into a dramatic point as all of the instruments join. This includes many different types of instruments: orchestra, woodwind, and percussion. This composer also has a great use of repetition, in the first minute of the song he repeats small sections with the same instrument, but as the song develops he makes this more complicated and repeats longer sections and changes instruments each time. I really like this style because it allows the listener to hear each instrument individually, which is rarely done in a song. Drums are used to keep the beat in this section of the piece, which makes the battle feeling stronger and alludes to a heartbeat sound. But it is really the trumpets that stand out in the song and give the beginning of the battle presentation. After the repetition involving different instruments the song begins a decrescendo, this is a great transition into the next big change in the music. A dramatic shift happens and the music turns into a soft, smooth melodic tune that you would dance to at a ball. There is the use of a tiny bell sound that lightens the mood. The notes in this section are much longer and smoother than previously. Also, the woodwinds were taken out during this section and we only hear orchestra. I did not particularly enjoy this song until it transitioned in such a dramatic way; I have never heard such a transition in a piece where it goes from a battle theme to a ball dance theme. This…

Instead of attending a concert and writing a concert report, I decided to do the radio report. On April 24, 2007, I listened to the station WWOZ 90.7 FM from seven to eight p.m. It was hosted by Jivin Jean and Neal. The theme of that session was the 50's Rhythm and Blues. Because the Jazz Fest is approaching, they decided to feature some of the artists that would be performing. In which they varied from Percy Sledge to the Fister Sisters.…

“Mushaf” is an excellent and marvelous piece of work by “Nimra Ahmad”. The novel is beautifully woven itself. The opening of this novel is full of suspense which draws the reader towards giving full attention and consideration till the end of the novel. The strings of the novel are not intermingled even at a single point and all the things are clear and well-defined throughout. As far as public inspiration is concerned, one can get a lot from it. Beauty of relationship, strength of love, character and love for Allah Almighty are all these described at the same time. While reading the novel, one can feel the extent to which the writer has researched in order to create each scene in the plot of her novel. We can even say that no one scholar can describe our relationship with Quran and Allah Almighty as effectively as she has done and conveyed it to the reader in thoroughly impressive way which is the best ever point of this novel. Mushaf means “Quran” and commonly used it for the Quran in the arabic countries.…

I used to starve, cut, cry myself to sleep, hated every inch of my body, and wanted to die, but One Direction have taught me so many things in the past three years in their own way and made me realize that it was stupid for doing those things. Harry Styles, the curly haired boy, made me believe that you don’t need to be super skinny and gorgeous to get a guy. He also taught me age isn’t the biggest problem in a relationship. The only Irish member, Niall Horan, taught me it’s okay to be different. He made me believe that some guys really will wait for the girl of their dreams, not just the other way around. Louis Tomlinson, the oldest member, made me believe it’s okay to be immature no matter how old you are. He taught me people can change and dress how I like no matter what people say to me. The more matured band mate, Liam Payne, convinced me that if you want something bad enough and you keep trying, you can reach your goals, even if you fail the first time. He also inspired me to change it up every so often. The last member who is real inspiring is Zayn Malik. He is the most inspiring person to me because he taught me that being shy can be a good thing sometimes. Also, he taught me that it’s okay to be happy with your appearance, and to love yourself. If the haters don’t believe me now, then one last thing, they made girls feel beautiful and brought fans closer together. We are family.…
