I went to the Cantor Center for Visual Arts on Stanford Campus on 2/28/13. I saw a lot of sculptures and vases there. They are very beautiful and interested. The most interested one I think was Kleophon Painter, “Volute Krater”, ca. 430 BCE, Greece, red-figure terra cotta vase, size 26’ ¾” * 19’ *19’. Hazel D. Hansen Fund, 12, 1972 Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University. This vase is located in the Iris & B Gerald Cantor Center from the classical period between 479-323 BCE in Greece. The Kleophon Painter is an anonymous Athenian vase painter in red figure style. The name he is named because of a youth named “Kleophon”. He is also good at Achilles Painter; a number of “black figure” works in the mid-to-late 5th century BCE. The themes of his vases are mostly stick to specific genres. People found “104 domestic style vases, 43 vases about mythology, and 24 paintings about warriors”. (“Kleophon Painter”, from Wikipedia, background, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kleophon_Painter) And now people can find his vases all over the world. Most of his vases are bigger vases, only a few ones in smaller size. And most of his vases are Kraters. Those Kraters are classified as “manner of Kleophon P” or “compares to Kleophon P”. The one that is similar to Kleophon Painter is Dinos Painter. Most of his vases were discovered in or around the city-state of Athens. There are “22 Kleophon Painter’s vases are still in Athens at Agora Museum or the Athens National Museum”. (From Wikapedia, Kleophon Painter, background, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kleophon_Painter) The characteristic of Kleophon Painter’s vase is using a rounded off triangle shape for the eyes and the chin is rounded off, too. The characters he shows are always people in the home. The painter use mythology as a subject to show the emotions and actions. The themes of Dionysus and Hephaistos are very common in the Kleophon Painter’s works. The painting of this vase is black from the top of the neck

When I visited the Brooklyn Museum, I got to see many different works of art. While looking around on the 3rd floor, there was one specific piece that caught my attention, “King Senwosret III”. King Senwosret III was a 12th Dynasty King that ruled from c. 1836-1818 BCE. King Senwosret III was considered to be one of the most powerful rulers during the middle kingdom. This small, black granite sculpture that caught my eye is of him. It was created during the time of the middle kingdom. It is not known for sure, but this artwork is believed to be from Hierakonpolis, Egypt. During this time period, sculptures of kings depicted a more real look. The Middle Kingdom lasted from c. 1975-1640 BCE. Art was very important to the Egyptian culture. The sculpture of King Senwosret III has certain characteristics that make it obvious to see that it is an Egyptian work.…

As an art student, I find the art that we learn about in class very interesting because it is art that I would never be interested in, but yet after learning the details I enjoy them. Although I don’t mind learning art through power points, I find physically looking at art more enjoyable. Getting the whole experience of physical artwork is a more exciting way to learn and catches my interest more, which is why I was so excited to visit a new museum and look at some art. For this assignment I decided to go to the LACMA museum. I have been to many museums before, but I have not visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art yet so I was very excited. I find a lot of art very fascinating, but I am more interested in the more contemporary and modern arts. I am a design major so I was drawn to the sculptural art pieces that were displayed outside the building. One piece in particular that I found very beautiful and fascinating was an outside display entitled “Urban Light”.…

Martin Robertson and Mary Beard’s manuscript, Adopting an Approach, focuses on the study of Athenian pottery. The manuscript begins, by describing Sir John Beazley and his revolutionary method of studying Greek vases. The Beazley Method focuses on the technical conventions of Greek Vases such as naming the artist, dating the pieces and then grouping them based off of similar characteristics. Beazley “provided for the first time a comprehensive framework of analysis for Athenian painting, and a way of dating and classifying.” (Pg. 16) However, what Beard’s main argument suggests is that it is not the artists that help us understand the importance of the vases because even if a vase is assigned to a specific time period or artist, there is still no way of knowing anything about that artist. These artists “have no existence, no social or historical reality that we can investigate outside the pots.” (pg.17) So, rather than focusing on the artist-producer, Beard makes the argument of switching the focus to the viewer. What is important is the actual vase and thus, we should be asking questions about the vases and what the images on the vases represent and mean. Beard’s claim is that the images on Athenian pottery are directly related to Athenian culture, society and ideas.…

The first two pictures that are being compared are Shirin Neshatb “Allegience with Wakefulness” 1994 and Jasper Johns “Three Flags” 1958. In the “Allegience with Wakefulness” is instrumentalist. It is instrumentalist because it is the writing on this person’s feet is not English and there is a gun between the person’s feet. This might be taken as things that are different from what we are used to be taken as threat. American people in general have a closed minded way of looking at things. The other aesthetic perspective for this art piece that are noted is linguistic. Linguistic are has symbols as well and the gun could also be seen as a symbol. It has words written in it too specifically on the feet. This artistic piece is powerful because it can have so many meanings to it and can mean many things to many different people. “Three Flags” is a linguistic painting. It is obvious that this is a linguistic painting because it is the American flag. The American flag is tied strongly to American culture. It is a symbol of our freedom. Imitationist is the next aesthetic perspective that is seen in this paper, obviously because it looks just like the American flag. The American flag looks like it is popping of the page because of the way they get smaller as they move forward. Both of these art pieces have a strong message behind them. The first one, “Allegience with Wakefulness” has a language in it that most Americans would not be able to understand. It also has a gun which could mean a lot of different things in this particular picture. The second picture “Three Flags” is pretty much the opposite of that. It is very recognizable for everyone in the American culture. It stands for freedom our freedom.…

After visiting the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, I will write about four art works. The first one is called Salome Receiving the Head of St. John the Baptist by Andrea Solario. The work is very colorful, and it shows chiaroscuro with the dark background and light on the faces of Salome and John the Baptist. The focal point is on John’s head. This is one of Solario’s most notable works, and the figure style is influenced by Leonardo Da Vinci. The story behind the painting is that Herodias had a quarrel with John the Baptist, and would have killed him herself. Instead, her daughter, Salome, danced for Herod and he was so pleased that he said he would give her anything she asked for. She asked for John the Baptist’s head on a platter at her mother’s urging. I believe I was interested in this work because I already knew about the subject matter, but I don’t think you have to know a lot about the art before entering the museum to be interested in it.…

In the Ancient Gallery in the Chazen Museum of Art, there is a bell krater from Attica, Greece that was made around 460-450 BCE. It is a ceramic vase that is in excellent condition with the exception of a few chips on the red-figure decoration. The Bell Krater (figure 1, figure 2) stands under two feet tall and is just over one foot in width. Overall, the scene and design style on this krater is mostly consistent throughout the entire body of the vase, but there are a few formal elements that separate the scenes on Side A (figure 1) from Side B (figure 2). The three main elements that will be discussed include technique, space, and line, as they all have a significant impact on how the viewer sees the artwork. While the Bell Krater is cohesive as a whole, the different use of formal elements on each side would have created individual impressions for the viewer in Ancient Greece as they surveyed both viewpoints while dining in their home.…

Marble statue of the Diadoumenos is a Roman statue by Polykleitos from the Flavian period, A.D. 69-96. Polykleitos was a Greek sculptor in bronze of the fifth and the early fourth century BC. Next to Phidias, Myron and Kresilas, he is considered the most important sculptor of Classical antiquity. He was of the school of Argos, a contemporary of Phidias and, in the opinion of the Greeks, his equal. Diadumenos means “diadem-bearer”.…

This paper is a formal analysis of the Marble grave stele with a family group relief sculpture. It is a pentelic marble style relief standing at 171.1cm tall carved by a master. It is from the Late Classical period of Greek, Attic which was completed around ca.360 B.C. . I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because I’m mainly attracted to art and sculptures from the Greek era. The overall color used in this relief is ivory with a few cracks and pieces broken off. There is some discoloration which causes the color to come off as slightly light brown for most of the relief. The sculpture appears larger compared to the other sculptures in the art room. It represents a family which includes a man, his wife, and their child united on one high relief. There is a fourth character that is a part of the relief but she appears to be incomplete. The high relief contributes to the overall size of this sculpture by expanding the shape and proportions of all the characters. The right side is compact consisting of three of the four characters while the left is loose with just a head present.…

The second-largest art museum in the country, the Art Institute houses treasures and masterpieces from around the globe, including a fabulous selection of both impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. The theme I decided to pick was called the Holiday Thorne room. The Holiday Thorne room has the most magnificent displays including descriptions of holiday objects that were labeled as historic from previous ownerships. Some artifacts took us all the way back to Germany and China which sparked the room for the holiday spirit. The 68 dollhouse-like rooms, built on a scale of one inch to one foot, display what rooms around the world looked like in different historical eras. The curator name was Lindsay Morgan, and said adding the Christmas decorations was a lot of work. Morgan says she spends months researching the holiday traditions for each room. Last year on NBC’s Today show, they had labeled the Art Institute’s most popular attractions. As I was absorbing the room’s beauty, I took note on how the rooms were specially made for holiday fineries that showcases historical traditions. Also they had offers on the window into seasonal festivities. New to the decorating tradition this year is the Pennsylvania Dutch (German) room. And, for the first time in 50 years, an original German Rococo room will be displayed in the same Thorne room.…

My vase is made in approximately 520-510 BC, a crucial transitional period in Greek art when black-figure technique reaches its pinnacle and begins to be replaced by the red-figure technique. The overall high quality of black-figure painting of the period is visible in my vase through the vividly depicted figures and details such as the folds in clothes and the additional use of white and red colors for female skin and decorations. Specifically, my vase exemplifies the styles of the Antimenes Painter and that of the Leogros group, both are active in the last two decades of the sixth century. The Antimenes painter is the most prolific Attic artist who specializes in painting hydriae and neck amphorae at his time. His vases are identified by stylistic traits such as the primary picture on the front of the body, a subordinate one on the shoulder, the linear pattern at the bottom of the neck, the ivy pattern framing the body and the ray pattern at the predella. The artist has a special fondness for chariot processions and Herakles as subjects. One of his other hydriae closely resembles my object in terms of subject matter and…

The Geometric Krater is a magnificent piece of Greek Art. In the eight century, vase painting became very popular. The vases show a great show a great variety of style and development over the centuries, beginning with the geometric and very linear style. They then continued through the oriental style which borrowed images from the eastern world, and into the classical era with mythology portrayed with as much classical accuracy as the ancient Greek potters and painters could muster. The majority of the vases were made of a ceramic material which could easily be used for everyday uses, however in this time, the artists would then paint on them in order to decorate them and make them ornate enough to be used for cultural or ceremonial uses such as grave markers. The Geometric Krater is a prime example of the vase painting movement in Greek art.…

For my cultural event I decided to go and visit the Orlando Museum of Art. There were a lot of different types of art on display. My favorite exhibits had to be the ones on American landscape and the Tony Robbin exhibit. Those both really captured my attention. I also saw all of the art that the Aztecs created. It’s crazy how people from such a long time ago can create such wonderful art. There was one really cool exhibit by David Isenhour and instead of actual paintings, it was very unique looking sculptures that actually made you stand there and think about them and what the artist was thinking when he created them.…
