Art Appreciation IP UNIT2

Part 1: My first Ancient Art piece I choose from the New York Museum was the Head of a roaring lion from the Neo-Assyrian period.
My second piece of Art was chosen from Washington, DC Museum. I chose the Head of a pharaoh from the Ancient Egyptian Art.
Part 2: While comparing and contrasting between the two Arts I noticed that they both where created With strength in mind as the subject and content matter but it was hard not to notice the different materials used within the two sculptures while the Head of the roaring lion was created with ivory carvings the Head of a pharaoh was created with stone and copper. While they both are representational and 3-demensional head figures of art they both contain different meanings. (The Mteropolitan Museum Of Art- Head of a roaring lion) For example take the head of the roaring lion represents the strength of the Assyrian culture where as the head of the pharaoh is more of a symbolic figure as a ruler over southern Egypt. Back then such statues where placed on tombs for eternal images of the deceased.(Antient Egyptian Art Collection Highlights) I believe that the subject matter of both art forms is a little similar while they represent the artist message of strength, leadership, hierarchy, respect and most of all discipline. The head of the pharaoh is black and copper looking but made in a cone shape that’s very smooth but yet also curvy and polished while the roaring lion on the other hand looks grey, rough and edgy and broken in several places.
Part 3: (The Mteropolitan Museum Of Art- Head of a roaring lion)the head of the roaring lion was during 9th-8TH B.C. and the head of the pharaoh 2675-2130 B.C.E. (Antient Egyptian Art Collection Highlights). To me the artists of both pieces are trying to show us (the art viewers) that important reputation that these to sculpture had in society during those time frames. For example in today’s society the Lion is still considered to be

By comparing the two sculptures of Khafre, image 3-11 ca. 2520-2494 BCE (1), with the statue of Doryphoros (Spear Bearer), image 5-40 ca. 450-440 BCE (2) you get a true sense of the evolution of art, from Pharaonic Egypt to Classical Athenian Greece two millennia later. This was not just a revolution in art but also philosophy, which transported itself into not only the types sculptures created but also the style used by their creators.…

On the fifth floor of the Denver Art Museum’s North Building, four panels of a sarcophagus lay dismembered, mounted upon the wall. The sarcophagus is native to China, hailing from era of the Han dynasty from 500-534. Though unfortunately dismantled, the panels remain in exceptional condition especially being made of out of a single block of limestone. As might be expected, the sarcophagus is of reasonable size, likely to encase an entire human body and then some additional items. The most captivating features of the sarcophagus, however, are the two animals dominating the two largest panels: a tiger and a dragon. The subjects illustrated unto the pieces share similar enchanted aspects but they undoubtedly demonstrate two discrete…

The statue of the Lion, as described by Herodotus, was commissioned specifically to be given in honor of Apollo. It’s unlikely it would have been created otherwise. While the lion may have been damaged in a fire, many other pieces of art have managed to survive to the contemporary world. Such as the Dreros Apollo, a statue of the god Apollo which was found with two female figures, likely Leto and Artemis. This statue dedicated in honor of the god, is important to our understanding of the development and production of Greek statuary art as it is the only known example of a technique called sphyrelaton work.1 Another object left behind as a result of offerings to the Gods, is the Mantiklos figurine, also dedicated in honor of the god Apollo. This figurine shows key traits of Geometric art, however, it also reflects changes and developments in the style, as it’s more rounded out in the shoulders, chest, thighs, and buttocks.2 It also features an inscription stating “Mantiklos dedicated me to the Far-Darter of the silver bow, as part of his tithe, do thou, Phoebos, grant him gracious recompense.”3 As the texts pointed out, the offerings were given in exchange for the God’s favor, just as this inscription…

Statues come in many different forms, sizes, styles, and reasons. After watching our online video and I saw a statue from “The New Kingdom” of the infamous Pharaoh Akhenaten. I was intrigued by the unusual features of this statue. They were unlike the traditional features on a statue I am accustomed to. My research was to find out a little more about this Pharaoh and why he was featured so radically different from the typical statues I was accustomed seeing from ancient times including that of ancient Egyptian tradition. I took a look at some historical facts to see if they may help put the pieces of the puzzle together.…

At first glance of the Lion hunt of Ashurbanipal ca. 645-635 B.C. (Frankfort 1996, 187) one will notice that there are three figures; two male human figures and one lion. One would notice first that the middle figure which is Ashurbanipal the main focus of the work of art because he is doing all the actions. It is also apparent that the Ashurbanipal is the main subject because it is the largest figure in the work. This work is done in stone using low relief technique. The lion and the servant are in supporting role to make Ashurbanipal standout from the rest of the composition.…

The subjects featured in the artwork are Pharaoh Menkaure and Queen Khamerernebty. At first glance, the part of the sculpture that seems to stand out the most are the heads of the pharaoh and the queen. The faces and headdress appear more detailed than the rest of their bodies and have a sharper quality to them than the smoothness of the bodies. Of course, seeing the image at a different angle or under a different light could potentially make other areas of the sculpture stand out more.…

I have chosen two statues from different eras to make a comparison, Marble statue of Dionysos leaning on an Archaistic Female Figure from the Roman era and Bronze statue of Artemis and a deer from Greek or Roman, late Hellenistic or early Imperial periods. The reason why I have chosen these two objects are that both of them have one big figure and one small figure which makes eyes of viewers move around. They also depicted gods with smaller figures. These two statues have many differences as they are made of different materials and have different poses even though these have similar composition.…

    The Dying Lioness

    • 438 Words
    • 2 Pages

The Dying Lioness a small detail of one of the many Assyrian relief carvings that were found during the Assyrian rule. The Relief itself was titled Ashurbanipal hunting Lions and belonged to the North Palace of Ashurbanipal. It was created in 645 to 640 BCE and like many reliefs; it pictured a hunt taking place. It was average sized at about five and a half feet tall and carved out of Gypsum rock giving itself a red hue. This falls into place with the description of most reliefs from this time. But what made this Assyrian relief stand out? It was a small detail, a lioness to be exact. The hunt depicted did not take place in the wild but in a controlled environment, ensuring the king would be victorious. The king is in his chariot with his attendants. He is throwing a spear into a lion, which already has several fatal wounds on its body. All around the royal chariot is a pathetic trail of dead and dying animals pierced by far more arrows than needed to kill them. All around the chariot are the bodies of dead lions littering the ground, most overkilled with far more arrows and spears necessary to kill the beasts. The artist does a fantastic job of showing the rippling muscles and facial wrinkles in all of the lions. But there is one lioness that is different from the other lions. She is pictured holding herself up with her front two legs while dragging the back two on the ground. Her muscles are tense and her face is full of emotion. Even though the multiple wounds she has sustained will inevitably be the death of her she still holds herself up to let out one last roar. Her roar is a roar that suggests defiance against the cruel game that is being played against her and her fallen feline comrades. The artist was obviously not re-creating exactly what happened during this “hunt”, suggesting that he would have had to feel sorrow or sadness for these animals to depict them this way. Otherwise the…
