Muscle tissue
Muscle tissue has a ability to relax and contrast and so bring about movement and mechanical work in various parts of the body. There are other movements in the body too which are necessary for the survival of the organism such as the heart beat and the movements of the alimentary canal.
Muscles can be divided into three main groups according to their structure * Smooth muscle tissue. * Skeletal muscle tissue. * Cardiac (heart) muscle tissue. Types of Muscle Tissue
Cardiac (Heart) Muscle Tissue is so named because it is found in the heart. Cells are joined to one another by intercalated discs which allow the synchronization of the heart beat. Cardiac muscle is branched, striated muscle.
Functions of Cardiac (Heart) Muscle Tissue * Cardiac muscle tissue plays the most important role in the contraction of the atria and ventricles of the heart. * It causes the rhythmical beating of the heart, circulating the blood and its contents throughout the body as a consequence.

Skeletal Muscle Tissue which is attached to bones by tendons, is associated with the body's voluntary movements. Skeletal muscle is striated muscle. Unlike cardiac muscle, the cells are not branched.
Functions of Skeletal Muscle Tissue * Skeletal muscles function in pairs to bring about the co-ordinated movements of the limbs, trunk, jaws, eyeballs, etc. * Skeletal muscles are directly involved in the breathing process.

Smooth Muscle Tissue is found in various parts of the body such as the arteries, the bladder, the digestive tract, as well as in many other organs. called smooth muscle because it doesn't have cross striations. It contracts slower than skeletal muscle, but the contraction can be sustained over a longer period of time.

    The myocardium is the middle layer and finally the endocardium is the innermost. The heart is composed of different cell types which all contribute to structural, biochemical, mechanical, and electrical properties. Forming the walls of the heart are atrial and ventricular cardiomyocytes. Cells specialize in different roles. They determine the function of a tissue in the human body. Endothelial cells form the endocardium which is the interior lining of blood vessels and cardiac valves. Over 50 percent of the cells the heart contains are cardiac fibroblasts. There are also pacemaker cells and Purkinje fibers that are specialized cardiomyocytes that generate and conduct electrical impulses. The sinoatrial node is composed of some of these pacemaker cells and rests in the right atrium generating impulses to initiate contraction of the heart. Between the atria and ventricles is the antrioventricular node. It conducts electrical impulses from the atria to the ventricles. If organs were comprised of just one type of cell they would only be able to carry out one task rather than multiple specific tasks. Instead, having multiple cells gives us an advantage.     Heartbeats are needed to pump blood around our bodies. Heartbeats are initiated with electrical impulses which start out in Sino Atrial Node. The Sino Atrial Node sends its electrical impulse to the atrium when it detects that it is full as when the atrium is full it contracts and squeezes the blood in to the ventricles. In order for the ventricles to squeeze the blood out of the ventricles and in to the arteries so it can be pumped around the body, the electrical message from the Atrial Ventricular Node needs to be at the bottom of the heart, otherwise known as the apex. This is so that the blood is squeezed from the bottom to the top so as to not put pressure on the apex of the heart. However, the Atrial Ventricular Node is positioned towards the top of the heart so in order for the electrical pulse to get to the apex, it has to travel down the septum (the middle of the heart). 1 problem with this is that the electrical impulse could spread to the cardiac muscles, causing it to contract which we do not want. To prevent this from happening we have a protective case surrounding our septum known as the Bundle of His. This prevents the contraction of cardiac muscle. When the ventricles or atriums contract, this is called ventricular/atrial systole. When the heart is relaxed, it is also known as dystole.…
