The piece “Devi Niye Tunai” is in kriti genre. The kriti genre is made of three major parts: Pallavi, Anupallavi, and Charanam. There are usually sections that are played before and after these three parts that make a piece that is in kriti genre sound complete, so we can say the kriti section of the piece is in the kriti genre (the whole piece). There is a section that is played before these three sections, and it is called alapana. Alapana does not have rhythm; in other words, it has free rhythm. In the alapana section of Devi Niye Tunai the singer is improvising in the Keeravani raga. She does so in order to warm up, become familiar and explore the notes in the the raga, and make herself ready for the main section of the piece which is the kriti. The alapana section can go on for even half an hour, but in the piece “Dive Niye Tunai” the singer improvises just for a few seconds. After the alapana section, the singer moves on to the kriti section of the genre. The first part of the kriti is pallavi which is when the mridangam player joins the group. In the piece Devi Niye Tunai there are three sound producers that construct the piece: voice, drone (tambura), and maridangam. In this piece, the drone starts and ends the piece, and it harmonizes the piece and provides a unique sound experience for listeners. The voice (singer) plays the melody of the piece, and she also represents the text which has a religious meaning and it is representing the praises of the goddess Meenakshi and asking for protection. The three powers who are being referred to in the text are Lakshmi Devi who represents wealth, Parvati Devi who represents power and love, and Saraswati Devi who represents learning and art.
When the singer enters the pallavi section, she still sings the melody in the Keeravani raga (the notes ga and da are flat), but the difference is that the piece gets metric rhythm in this section. The tala of this piece is Adi which has eight bits and is represented by

For this assignment I chose “Farandole” from L’ Arlesienne Suite no. 2: Georges Bizet (1/37). Listening to this piece with both listening guides I choose the Connect Karmien guide as best for myself. Both guides show in detail breakdowns of the music. But following along in the book was harder for me. Seeing it in front of me using the Connect Kamien listening guide showed each section broken down by seconds as did the text book only thing different was that it also went down the steps as it was happening. Such as high lightening each change once it took place. That alone made it easier for me to follow along with the music. It also helped me stay focused on the music instead focusing on the book and keeping time to notice the upcoming changes that were about to take place.…

The famous main melody, introduced after a few counts of quarter notes from the lower instruments, is played and repeated by the upper instruments three times with slight changes each time. During this melody, it can be difficult to play the notes short and precise while maintaining the delicacy. It then completely shifts to a moving section with chromatic eighth notes from the upper instruments that through crescendo and decrescendo with the lower instruments playing an interesting part in between repetitions. Eventually, it switches back to the main melody until the song ends with a rich long tone from the lower…

Another melody in the song no. 2, melody B (fig. 19) appears together with the melodies A and A’ in the middle of the song in mm. 88-99 and mm. 128-139. Contrary to the melodies A and A’, the orchestra and the melody B have the same mode, C# Aeolian. Therefore, a direct modulation in fourth relationship occurs between melodies A and A’ in G# Aeolian and melody B in C# Aeolian, while a modulation using a common chord G# minor occurs in the accompaniment as seen in fig. 20.…

In the final movement of the piece is when the soloist in mezzo-soprano sings her part in the Hebrew language (Chilsom, Kate Web). The tone of her voice at times intensifies as to show her sorrow and shame. The instrumental music becomes somber again, and the texture of the music seems to be in anguish, as the orchestra comes together in between the solo parts to emphasize the emotion.…

Nagra uses different uses of language and techniques to gain attention. In stanza one the word "Daddy" refers to showing how innocent the character is and how it is easier for his wife to get him in control as he is innocent and naive so she can trap him easily. through out the poem Nagra uses phallic imagery as it says "your bananas are plantain" this sexual imagery is shown to create a sense of humor as when we think of bananas it then relates back to phallic imagery like the penis. He also uses sexual imagery again where it says"like we rowing through putney" the word 'putney' refers to the word puddi which is not an so romantic way to put it, he then again does this by purpose just too spice in a sense of humor. his wife is not presented as such a pleasant Indian wife as in many points in the poem she is described as an rebellious type of women who doesn't really go with the stereotype about how Indian women speak to elders with respect as "she egging at my mum" and "den stumble like a drunk making fun of my daddy" the first line shows how she has no respect for her mother in law and how disrespectful she is, due to her husband being naive and innocent maybe that is why she gets away with what she wants. This also shows negative effects towards her husband because if she loves her husband she would no treat her in laws in this way, gives a sign that maybe she is not that stereotypical Indian women you would expect from her. The same with her father in law she treats him in quite ghastly as who would make fun of their in laws. Then comes a point where it is written "above my head high heels tap di ground" When we think of heels we transmit it too someone who is working in an office or someone really posh, so this shows cleverness as office people tend to and are really clever .…

In the first section started on dark stage, only dancer has a spotlight. Music was soft and smooth. We could hear only piano while dancer was walking forward in straight posture with graceful movement. Started with smooth then mixed up with sharp and pedestrian movements. She uses long white scarf on the floor by showing to us hard work. In dance we say ”low” level. For example, she scrubs the floor, uses as a headband representing to carry something. Emotionally sad ness, she worked hard, she contracts in pain, she flutters her hands like captive birds and she tried to get out of struggling life, but she never gives up. There is pain here as well as power, and the music, so oddly modern to me. In…

Last Monday, I got to experience a sensational performance by the University Symphony, composed by Dr. Jonathan Pasternack, that enhanced my knowledge and emotional state through the uniqueness of both the symphony and opera act. Having only experienced a symphony once during the course of my life, I was ecstatic to attend such a soothing and joyful concert. The concert was fairly short, it last two hours, and consisted of 2 symphony songs and 1 opera act. The first two were symphony, which were played in a very unpredictable manner. The melody (violins) started off very slow and quickly increased their tempo. The orchestra performed many instances of crescendo and decrescendos; this kept the audience on the edge of their seats in anticipation. The second part consisted of an opera in one act entitled “L’Enfant Ee Les Sortileges by Murice Ravel, which was sung like an act, and played by the orchestra. Both parts of the performance were very unique in there own ways, however, what intrigued me the most, was the ability of the performers to create an emotional connection with the audience.…

The idakka is considered to be Devavadyam (a divine instrument) and is customarily played standalone during the puja at temples or as the accompaniment to the Sopanam music just outside the sanctum sanctorum, customarily by the Ambalavasi community Marar. The idakka is slung over the left shoulder and the right side of the instrument is beaten with a stick. The left hand is used for tightening and loosening the tape wound round the middle. Varying the tension of the tape produces variations in tones.…
