Murder on the Orient Express is more than just a murder mystery. It is a novel that utilizes a great deal of existing social issues of the era in which it was written and formed a commentary on those issues while giving the reader an intriguing yet approachable narrative. Through this approach, Agatha Christie has given the reader an opportunity to see the world through the eyes of the seasoned private investigator Hercule Poirot. In this world, nothing is at it seems and apparent coincidence belies a hidden truth, a world in which the geographical connections created by passenger railways allowed people of different nationalities and classes to rub elbows. Stereotypes of class and nationalities are both dominant social themes that persist throughout the novel. Social themes of crime, as well as good versus evil of the era also play an important role in the narrative.…

These characters, using all of their skills and wits, catches the murderer nevertheless. Over the course of this murder adventure, their actions change the plot of the story. If Poirot was not a good detective, the Clarke could have gotten away. If Cust wasn’t so self-blaming, then maybe he would have caught on faster and realized who was the true murderer. All of these “if”s only lead to different scenario, none quite the same as the original plot. All in all, this book ABC Mystery shows that the character's actions shape the story’s…

Through out one of the greatest Christmas stories of all time, it is easy to find the symbolism through the book, A Christmas C’arol. But one of my personal favorite symbolism is what the man Bob Cratchet represents along with his horrible relationship with Scrooge. The only character you feel more for Bob Cratchet is his son tiny tim. Through the first arc of the story, all you can really think of is how the mean Ebenezer Scrooge treats poor Mr. Cratchet. But what does this sad man represent. Well he represents the lower middle classes and is a symbol of how they are treated by their upper classes. But as the story kept moving we learned that there was still hope. lt is not hard to relate to the sad story of Bob Cratchet. Though he is an incredibly…

Lord Chesterfield once said, “ You must look in to people as well as at them.” Chesterfield believes that ones appearance cannot show there internal characteristics. This is proved by two scenes in the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest. The first of the two scenes is when Bromden speaks to McMurphy, the second scene is when McMurphy begins to obey Ratched’s rules. In both these scenes the characters show a great sense of dynamism. The two characters are originally judged on there appearance. Through out the novel, Bromden and McMurphy change and cannot be judged on their looks.…

Tom Robinson is a strong, honest, and humble man who has never been given the chance to be viewed as an equal. Because he is a Negro, he has never and will never be respected or treated for the man he is. Throughout the trial (so far,) he never once raised his voice, noticeably got angry, or disrespected anyone in the courtroom. He is aware that he is a black man going against a white man in trail; there is almost no way he can win this case. However, Tom exemplifies his strength and honesty when he claims he is not guilty, and places the fault on Bob Ewell. This is not acceptable, and Tom is fully aware of that, however he can say nothing but the truth and the whole truth. While Scout was observing the trial, she took a good long look at…

Oliver Twist is a novel teeming with many closely interrelated ideas. There is preoccupation with the miseries of poverty and the spread of its degrading effects through society. With poverty comes hunger, another theme that is raised throughout the book, along with Dickens's notion that a misguided approach to the issues of poverty and homelessness brings many evils in its wake. One of the worst consequences of poverty and being deprived of life's essentials is crime, with all of its corrosive effects on human nature. Dickens gives a great deal of attention to the painful alienation from society suffered by the criminal, who may come to feel completely isolated as the fragile foundations of his own hostile world snap it is the book unlike many others. Oliver Twist is a magnificent piece of literature, the enjoyment of reading this novel by Charles Dickens comes from the use of vocabulary, the great adventures Oliver faced, the new things he learned, like the time Oliver ran off to London and met Fagin who gave him step by step procedures on how to be a pocket picker.…
