Topic: The Question of Reducing Youth Unemployment

Sponsor: Egypt

The Economic and Social Council,

Recalling that in 2009, about 81 million young people were unemployed, the most ever.
Noting that young women have more difficulty than young men in finding work. The female youth unemployment rate in 2009 stood at 13.2 % compared to the male rate of 12.9 %.
Recognizing that youth unemployment rate rose 11.9 % to 13.0 % between 2007 and 2009, an increase of 7.8 million. 1. Calls for making targeted programs whose goal is to prepare the youth to get good jobs that would suit their needs, these programs would include; a) Providing a good basic education, by strengthening the teachers by offering a kind of teacher training. b) Providing vocational training or higher education and initial work experience that would grant the youth experience to prepare them and qualify them to decent work. 2. Emphasizing the need to increase investments countries’ rural areas to provide decent work for youth, to avoid low living standards and de-population of rural areas. These investments can be but not limited to; a) Rural farms that offer jobs like; i. Farm manager ii. Sales coordinator iii. Technology coordinator b) A production assembly for Farm equipment that offer jobs like; i. General Manager ii. Sales Coordinator iii. Technology Coordinator 3. Recommends awareness raising to business men to encourage them to
Incorporate youth in their businesses, some methods are but not limited to; a) Phone-ins to radio stations b) Protests with media coverage (perhaps using celebrities) c) Mobilizing of members of parliament to take up the cause d) Conducting media interviews

4. Suggests holding workshops in the countries in which are largely effected, between the country’s government, the youth organizations in the country and the Youth Employment Network (YEN) to provide ideas on
