The breaking news piece of the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 left the world holding their breath. The story broke via BBC Breaking News’ twitter account on the 8th of March 2014. It seemed like a routine flight from Kuala Lumpa, Malaysia to Beijing in China. The Boeing 777-200ER was carrying12 crew and 227 passengers, 6 of which were Australian. The four news pieces chosen to analyse vary in proximity and format, including internet articles from news businesses The Wall Street Journal and the Sydney Morning Herald as well as newspaper reports from The Canberra Times and, lastly, an online news report via the ABC’s program Lateline. As this investigation is still pending and is so vast I have chosen to focus on one day’s worth of news and the subsequent newspaper articles (stories covered from the previous day). The main findings of Thursday 13th March 2014 were that China released satellite photos of the possible debris of Flight MH370 and theories that the aircraft may have continued flying for up to four hours.

Embed Tweet. The tweet informs us of what happened, the airline involved, the flight number, where the plane was travelling to and from and how many were on board. BBC Breaking News also included a link to Malaysia Airline’s Facebook page that informed the public of exactly what was going on.

The Wall Street Journal has been one of the central sources keeping the public up to date with the current disappearance of Flight MH370. The latest breaking news headline for Thursday 13th March 2014 read ‘Possible Crash Site’ of Malaysian Jet, According to China’ with the lead ‘China has released satellite images it of what it says could be the crash site of missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, though it’s not clear how strong the lead is.’ The angle of the lead suggests that the story will shed some light on a mysterious topic but may be skeptical. It focused, firstly, on the sizing of the ‘debris’ spotted off the Southern tip of

The official report by the U.S. government reads that Earhart and Noonan ran out of fuel, crashed into the water, and sank (“What Happened to Amelia Earhart?”). One of the most common hypotheses made about Earhart and Noonan’s death is that they landed on Nikumaroro (“What Happened to Amelia Earhart?”). For a while this island was left uninvestigated because at the time it was “uninhabited” (“What Happened to Amelia Earhart?”). Evidence later found by the TIGHAR, or International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, contradicts this idea with The Earhart Project (“What Happened to Amelia Earhart?”). TIGHAR found improvised tools, remnants of shoes, traces of a campfire, and aircraft wreckage that looked much like Earhart’s plane (“What Happened to Amelia Earhart?”).…

At around 8:45 am on a Tuesday morning, an American Airlines Boeing crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The plane was loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel leaving a burning gaping hole on impact (“9/11 Attacks”). The statuesque steel-framed tower had 110 floors, where many people were instantly killed and others trapped on the higher levels. Meanwhile in Tower 2, employees were in slight panic as the first building was beginning to collapse before them. They soon believed that it was a freak accident and were told to return back to work. Unfortunately, that was a precaution that should have been rethought. As people watched the unfortunate events in New York, American Airlines Flight 77 circled over downtown Washington, D.C., and slammed into the west side of the Pentagon at about 9:45 a.m. Approximately, 18 minutes after the first plane hit a second plane swiftly appeared with an intended target; the second tower. As bystanders on looked this horrific sight, it then became very evident that this wasn’t an accident and America was under attack. Instantaneously the busy New York City streets became permeated with falling debris from. The pretty clear sky that beamed a morning sky was now a very flush and dark sky with fear in the air. As paramedics and firefighters arrived to the scene they were dismayed with what…

In Britain public outrage over the hacking of people's mobile-phone voicemail messages, by investigators hired by newspapers, continues to grow. At first it was the royal family and celebrities whose messages were found to have been intercepted. As the number of cases multiplied, the News of the World, the Sunday tabloid at the centre of the scandal, found it ever harder to maintain its line that just one “rogue reporter” was to blame. Now, to widespread disgust, there are reports that the messages of murdered schoolgirls, and of victims of the 2005 terrorist attacks in London, may also have been intercepted. On Thursday, as advertisers continued to desert the tabloid, its owners, News International, announced that it would be closed down.…
