Multicultural Supervision Influence
The results of this study suggest that multicultural incidents in supervision influence the supervision process and the multicultural competence of supervisors and supervisees. This influence may be positive or negative, depending on the nature of the supervisory relationship and the manner in which the cultural issues are addressed. This finding is important because it suggests that the relationship may be a pivotal component of multicultural supervision that moderates how all other experiences are perceived . The negative perceptions and experiences resulted from conflicts in communication and in the relation­ ship between supervisor and supervisee. The most striking influence of positive experiences of multicultural incidents was increased awareness for both supervisors and supervisees. The largest number of …show more content…
First, both supervisors and supervisees noted this influence, which suggests that the increase in awareness was significant enough to be observed by both parties. Second, this finding suggests that increasing awareness may be one of the most reason­ able goals for multicultural supervision. Another notable finding was that al­ though supervisees did not indicate that exposure to cultural differences was influential in their development, supervisors did believe that exposure was influential in their supervisees' development. This finding highlights the role of the supervisor in identifying and observing situations in which supervisees come in contact with cultural incidents because supervisees may not be consciously aware of the situation's impact on their counseling competence. The influence category of Skill Development highlighted supervisors' gains in cultural sensitivity as a result of the self-disclosure of supervisees and other in­ sight-oriented interventions.
