Multicultural Counseling
As schools are becoming increasing diverse, school counselors are responsible to help all multicultural student. Thus, school counselors are ethical obligated to have awareness, knowledge, and skills to assist the multicultural student population. As a minority, I believe that multicultural counseling can greatly impact students to gain a better understanding of others, themselves, and shape their experiences and interconnection with other cultures. Although I was born and raised in Fresno, California, which is “one of the largest, fastest growing, and most diverse counties in the states of California” according to the County of Fresno website (2015), I lived in a close-knit community where the majority of the families around me were other Hmong families like myself. I also wished I had a school counselor who was multicultural competent like Connie Cha, a vice-principal at McLane High School, that always tries her best to connect with each students. I believed that if my assigned school counselor was understanding of my reasons to apply only to Fresno State, I could’ve feel more accepted. With these are the reasons, I ultimately believe that school counselors and administrators must take action to address and embrace multicultural at their schools to create well-rounded multicultural experiences for all students to prevent students feeling defeated and alienated.

Dodson wrote that “One of the major challenges school counselors face is uncertainty about whether they are sufficiently prepared to meet the needs of multiracial, multilingual, and multicultural students” (2013, p. 18).
