Mullainathan Racial Bias
The article, Racial Bias, Even When We Have Good Intentions, written by Sendhil Mullainathan focuses on the racial bias African Americans experience compared to White Americans or any other racial group. In the article, Mullainathan refers to a study he conducted with a colleague. Mullainathan and his colleague mailed resumes to different jobs that had job openings, but they mailed some with “African American” names and some with “White American” names. At the conclusion of their studies, it was concluded that the resumes with “White American” names on them received more feedback and call backs compared to the resumes with “African American” names. Mullainathan goes on to say, “Because the résumés were statistically identical, any differences …show more content…
The racial bias doesn’t stop here though. In the article, Mullainathan goes on to talk about how African Americans are treated unfairly in everyday situations. Mullainathan says, “When doctors were shown patient histories and asked to make judgments about heart disease, they were much less likely to recommend cardiac catheterization (a helpful procedure) to black patients — even when their medical files were statistically identical to those of white patients.” This is a big issue, because the color of a person’s skin or a person’s native origin should not be the reason that a group of people are discriminated against. This continued racial bias and discrimination will only affect the public’s opinion in a negative way as well. When people begin to see that a certain group of people are discriminated against, they may in turn not even want to have dealings with the person who is doing the discriminating. This will impact the offender’s business/ company in a negative way, because they may begin to lose business simply because of the unfair treatment they are doing to a group of
