Andrew Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830. This act called for the government to make treaties that required Native Americans to relocate west. Jackson thought that this policy was “just and liberal.” He thought the Native Americans would be able to keep their way of life. He was wrong. The Indian Removal Act brought a lot of hardship to the Native Americans. It also forever changed the relationship between whites and Native Americans. Before Jackson passed this act, he gave the Native Americans two choices. The two choices were that they could take on white culture and become citizens of the United States, or they could move to the Western territories and keep their…
In the film “Fast Food Nation” there are some obvious goals here. This film gives you an insight of what a fast food corporation is really like, and how they aren’t as great as they seem to be, as well as the problem with illegal immigrants coming over to America, being token advantage of, and mistreated. This film tries to make you more conscientious of what is going on behind the closed doors of America’s fast food industry. Don, who is Mickey's hamburger chain marketing director who helped develop “The Big One”, is sent to Cody, Colorado to inquire about the meat being tainted at the UMP packaging plant. The writer, uses some rhetorical appeals, as well as some common topics in order to make these points.…
The documentary, Supersize Me by Morgan Spurlock, is one of the most revealing and shocking works of film that I have ever seen. This movie shows that it really does take only one man to make an effective change in the world. Supersize me revolves around one man, Morgan Spurlock, who decides to challenge the fast food industry through a shocking demonstration. He embarks on a one month experiment in which all he consumes is the famous McDonald’s fast food chain’s food. The rules are that he cannot eat or ingest anything that is not sold on the McDonald’s menu, he must eat everything on the menu at least once, and he must eat three meals a day. His intent is to put on display, first hand, the effects that fast food have on the human body. While this was his intent to begin with, Spurlock had no clue what was in store for his body.…
In 1850 and later on, several transcontinental railroads were built for easier transportation. The government also granted federal land for the laissez-faire ideologists for building the railroad (Doc. A). However, the process was slower than it’s planned. “More than 800 petitions were presents to Land Commission, and already 10 years of delays have elapsed and only some 50 patents have been granted” (Doc. B). The petitioners eventually have to sell their possessions little by little. Richest landholders ended up “living as objects of charity” (Doc. B). Red Cloud was also upset by the poor work of the government. He believed that “commissioners are sent out there to do nothing but to rob [us] and get the riches of this world away from us” (Doc. C). As the chief of Oglala Sioux, the Native American felt that the new American had come to kick them out of their lands and to steal their properties and possessions. In addition, Native American was suppressed by the colonists. “White man a teacher who tortured an ambitious Indian youth by frequently reminding the brave changeling that he was nothing but a “government pauper” (Doc.J). They lost trust and faith in the new government of the United States. Furthermore, the freight rates had done more injuries to the Western region than anything else. “The railroads have retarded its growth as they first hastened it” (Doc. I). F.B. Tracy…
Super-sizing meals should be stopped because it has a negative effect on an individual’s health. This movie discusses that, because of the legal law suits that McDonalds has faced due to selling unhealthy choices. It was decided by the court that the plaintiffs would have a claim “only if they could prove that eating the food every day for every meal is dangerous.” The solution is to educate society on the effect that fast food has on an individual’s body.…
food production worldwide has undergone dramatic changes in the last 50 years then in the past 50,000 years combined. Farms now produce food at incredible rates by introducing large scale farming practices, genetically modifying seeds, pumping farm animals full of hormone injections to increase efficiency and introducing preservatives to extend shelf life. As a consequence of some of these practices, Farming animals suffer horrifically due to the fact that their bones do not develop at the same rate as their increasing weight resulting in painful fractures and in some cases complete immobility. The United States in particular uses these supposed advances in technology to make food available year around and in abundance for its populace. Moreover,…
It is without a doubt that fast food is causing many health and weight problems for a large percentage of Americans’. In the documentary by Morgan Spurlock, Supersize Me, Spurlock decides to experiment with the effects of eating too much fast food, McDonald’s in particular. This film puts a lot of emphasis on the large percentage of obese Americans’, particularly the unawareness of how bad fast food is for the body, and also questions how responsible consumers are for their own choices versus the responsibility of corporations. Spurlock uses many different rhetorical approaches throughout the film; a logical (logos) approach by documenting his own health and emotions, he provides interviews and statistics from experts creating trust and credibility (ethos), and evokes many emotions (pathos), such as humor and disgust from his audience. Morgan Spurlock in his documentary, Supersize Me, attempts to convince his audience that the consumption of fast food has caused a large part of the health problems that are seen in the majority of Americans’ today.…
Schlosser’s sense of humor and word choice set the all-inclusive tone throughout the book. His presentation of his argument is straightforward and out in the open. Although, Schlosser gives opportunities to side differently, his overall standpoint is potent. His intent in writing the book is to challenge people to consider the consequences of eating at McDonalds or any other fast food chain. He gives us insight on what really is going into our food.…
Back then, the nation had been divided up into two regions: one being of the native Americans and the other side being for the northerners. This separation caused many problems for the Americans. Tired of this separation President Thomas Jefferson had forced the native Americans on a long and deadly path known as the trail of tears. This trial lasted many days and weeks for the natives This trail was located on the western part of the United States. This forced trail had caused blending into the bigger culture which is known as assimilation.…
To begin with, when Andrew Jackson became president, he had an idea during his presidency to remove all the Native Americans west from the Mississippi River. Thus creating the Native Americans to move from their homelands that they have settled for…
By 1890, the first Transcontinental Railroad is completed. It runs through once serene land the natives called home. The tracks have dissected their frontier, carving out even smaller allotments then what the government issued to the natives.…
As if being relocated once from their homelands to reservations isn't bad enough, Native Americans were often forced out of reservations and pushed even farther West due to broken treaties by the U.S government and expansion. The government was unfair in most of its treaties and often did not follow through with them. The Dawes Act, for example, gave each family 160 acres of land to cultivate and after a probation period of 25 years, Native Americans would be granted ownership of land and United States Citizenship. The problem with this…
During the time of immediate displacement and dispossession of all Native Americans, former president Andrew Jackson was in office. Jackson thought that assimilation could not work and believed the only way to expand the white culture, was to move Native Americans from their lands to areas farther west (and pass the Indian Removal Act).…
In the first inaugural address of Andrew Jackson, he said he would observe the Indian’s rights which is a consistent habit of our government but, President Jackson turned his back and forced the Cherokee to move west because he found gold in their territory which at the time was in Georgia. Over 70,000 Cherokee had to move west. Many of which died due to diseases transferred by Americans and natural everyday colds. The term “Trail of Tears” was given to the period of ten years in which over 70,000 Indians had to give up their homes and move to areas assigned to tribes in Oklahoma (Indian Removal Act of 1830, November 3, 2013). The government promised this land to them “as long as grass grows and rivers run" (Indian Removal Act of 1830, 2013). Unfortunately, the land that they were given only lasted till 1906 and then they were forced to move to other reservations. Andrew Jackson also closed the National Banks. Due to this, inflation rose and the economy collapsed. Inflation is the result of higher prices and a decrease in the purchasing power of money. With the economy collapsing came the Panic of 1837.…
Welcome to At the Movies on ABC 1 and as usual I’m your host, _______. Tonight we’ll be reviewing the socially critical 2004 documentary, “Super Size Me” directed by and starring Morgan Spurlock. The film documents the 30 day period in which Morgan Spurlock ate three meals a day consisting of nothing but McDonalds whilst following these four rules: he can only eat things on sale, he must super size his meal if asked, he must eat everything on the menu at least once and lastly he must restrict himself to the ‘average’ amount of exercise, typical of the American population. It also documents the drastic effects this lifestyle has on Spurlock’s physical and psychological, wellbeing, and explores the fast food industry’s corporate influence, including how it encourages poor nutrition for its own profit.…
