At the base of Mount Fuji, Aokigahara is located, is it believed to be the most infamous forest in all Japan. This is also known as the Sea of Trees(Jukai), Suicide Forest and Japan’s Demon Forest. This forest has over 500 confirmed suicides since the 1950s (TOFUGU). Aokigahara is a forest that spreads across the northwest base of Mount Fuji, it is less than 100 miles from the west of Tokyo. This forest is growing on top a lava that flowed during the eruption of Mt. Fuji in 864. The forest has been here around 1,200 years ago. Although the lava that flowed from Mt. The last time the results were made public was in 2003, when about 105 confirmed suicides took place. It is believed that more people die here but their corpses are never found. The local government has stopped publicizing the numbers in an attempt to minimize the association with suicide in the forest. In the 1970s the suicide had become so infamous that the Japanese government had started to do an annual sweeps of the forest to search and to also clear out the bodies. In 2002, 78 bodies were found within the forest, in addition to the previous record of 74 in 1998. When 2003 came, the rate went up to 100. In 2004, 108 bodies were found in the forest and in 2010, 247 people attempted suicide but only 54 of them succeeded. This story ended with two lovers committing suicide in the forest. A large number of people believed that is how this all started. The history of suicide in the forest actually predates the novel and the place has long been associated with death. Hundreds upon hundreds of people have hanged themselves from the trees of Aokigahara. Wataru Tsurumui is a controversial 1993 bestseller of the book called “The Complete Suicide Manual”. This book describes various modes of suicide and even would recommend Aokigahara as the perfect place to die. This book is easily found in the forest, usually not too far away from a suicide victim and their belongings (TOFUGU).
