The debates over Italian national identity and unification in the period circa 1830-1870 were controversial. The ideas of the unification of Italy were preferential to those who wanted it to become a republic, but to others, they favored a separated monarchy of kingdoms and territories because a republic may be pernicious and consisted of mixed opinions.…

Before the decision of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Macaraeg v. E Care Contact Centers Ltd.[1] in December 2006, it was common ground that an employee could not claim civilly a remedy or benefit conferred to him or her by employment standards legislation because such legislation was viewed as a "self-contained statute," that exclusively governed the scheme or process for enforcing any contravention of its provisions. However, after the Supreme Court's decision in Macaraeg, there were, for a brief period while Macaraeg was under appeal, two inconsistent lines of authority on the subject in British Columbia until the Court of Appeal affirmed the pre Macaraeg line of authority. The purpose of this article is to critically examine both the Supreme Court's and the Court of Appeal's decisions in Macaraeg. In the interest of affording the reader a better understanding of these decisions, by way of a preamble, this article will review instructive cases in British Columbia prior to the Supreme Court's decision in Macaraeg.…

There are a lot of things that I have read and have influenced me. I think that reading an essay, book, or even just a poem can bring endless imagination. Reading opens endless worlds, and often time helps people in the real world. In “No Name Woman” by Kingston Maxine H., “Two Ways To Belong In America” by Mukherjee Bharati, and “What If Shakespeare Had Had A Sister” by Woolf Virginia, the authors write about how women have been repressed through the years in different cultures and different times.…

Encouraging an individual to communicate their needs, preferences and personal beliefs affecting their personal care is very important in health and social care. As care workers we have to always consider people’s preferences even if it is not what we would like as individuals. There may be cultural considerations that I might need to think about as a person but this does not stop me from encouraging an individual to communicate what they want. When I realize that the service user is not able to communicate their needs, preferences and personal beliefs with ease, I am always patient and give them more time or use other methods of communication to find out. An exciting year started between the Chinese and Turkish governments by committing to, and celebrating, a new form of friendship--a friendship of promising collaboration. 2012 kicked off by dedicating to “The Year of Chinese Culture in Turkey 2012" This will be followed by “The year of Turkish Culture in China 2013.” These cultural ventures are motivated by the reestablishing of the Legendary Silk Road between Turkey and China. The two countries have committed to building prosperous diplomatic relations, economic collaboration and cultural exchanges. The recent bilateral Agreement entitled “Framework Agreement on Further Expanding and Deepening Bilateral Trade and Economic Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the Government of The People's Republic of China,” (2010, ratified on 12th January 2012, but not yet promulgated in the Official Gazette) between Turkey and China can be considered highly inclusive. It contains past agreements dating back to the 1970s, thereby demonstrating our expectations of witnessing a tremendous growth of business relations in the history of Turkey and China, together with prosperous diplomatic relations. On July 17, 2012, the Turkey (Istanbul) China (Guangzhou) Business Forum was held in Istanbul. Both countries showed great deference to the Forum by having high level officials participate in the opening ceremony. Apart from the diplomatic highlights, the Forum attracted businessmen from both countries, and provided a platform for networking, creating a brainchild of business opportunities. The Forum aimed to establish the China (Guangzhou) Turkey (Istanbul) trade partnership by naming Istanbul and Guangzhou as Sister Cities3. In addition, the Forum celebrated July 17, 2012 as the Istanbul-Guangzhou Economic & Business Day, which will be followed up by the next ‘business day,’ estimably on October, 2013, in Guangzhou.
