Mrs Polkinghorne Character Analysis
Mrs Polkinghorne was the intriguing woman from social services that comes to my house every week. She is lean and strong, and her skin looks rough and hard. Her eyes are glassy and small, they don’t show much emotion. She drives a large blue wagonette that rattles like pots in the wind. You never quite know what to expect when Mrs Polkinghorne visits. She is a lonely old woman, she lives alone in her prehistoric cottage with only her two cats. She is never angry but doesn’t show many signs of happiness either. She never laughs but I have also never seen her cry. She reminds me of God. Slow to anger and kind. She is almost like God trapped in a human body, I am not sure why I get this impression though.

She makes my mum happy which is the best thing about her. Mum always cleans up the place for Mrs Polkinghorne and wears her best clothes, which to be honest, are not very flattering. She gets out of our creaking cupboards, her cracked china cups and sets them on a tray in

I don’t know why she would want to spend time with paupers like Mum and I but she always comes. I can hear her rattling wagonette coming from a kilometer away. Sometimes I think it will just collapse, the way it leans and shakes.

I know I am just a child, so sometimes it’s hard for me to understand things, but Mrs Polkinghorne never looks down at me, she says that I have a bright future ahead of me. I think it’s just because I am really good at maths. I don’t have many friends because I hardly ever go to school. I can’t get there most of the time because we don’t have a car. But sometimes Mrs Polkinghorne takes me. I really like school though. It’s the only thing I am good at.

When I am older and I have finished school I want to go to university and be like Mrs Polkinghorne. I want to help people like she does. I want to be able to change people’s lives, just like she has changed my life and my Mums. She is my

The late Mrs. Henry Dubose was the definition of a courageous soul, from the way she spoke her mind proudly, being a role model for future generations to her bravery in quitting her addiction. In a world where opinions are hidden, Mrs. Dubose was unlike any other. She shared her opinion, no matter who it harmed or helped, because she wanted to be heard. As Jem and Scout were passing Mrs. Dubose shared her opinion about their lives, exclaiming: “‘what are you doing in those overalls? You should be in a dress and camisole, young lady!’” (Lee 135). Mrs. Dubose was an experienced lady, so her knowledge of young ladies attire was vast, and it took a brave woman to give advice that could be heard as an insult. Because of Mrs. Dubose’s disconcern of social niceties, she was courageously going against a stream of people who disliked her.…

From the way Fitzgerald portrays Judy Jones, for example, it can be determined that internally she is full of youthful vigor and passion. Remarking upon her appearance after a prolonged separation from the narrator, he describes her rosy color as giving “a continual impression of [. . .] intense life, of passionate vitality” (Fitzgerald 190). Whereas as a child, this vitality in Judy is described as only being a “faint glow”. As she grows older, the color becoming more potent and “centered” expresses her growth into a passionate and vivacious woman. This change is a subtle notion that Judy has grown out of her sickly state and into one of power, livelihood, and as proven from her numerous encounters with men,…

The inference I would draw is Ellie learning that being partially deaf may be a gift. But, towards the end she knew that she could make a big difference in her life by using Gertrude as an example. I know because from watching Gertrude Ederle’s swimming Ellie learned that even Gertrude was also partially deaf but yet she still persevered. In the text it states that Gertrude kept going even though the water and the weather got rough. It also states that she had swam from France to England without giving up. In conclusion, Ellie learned that she could still do a lot of amazing things with or without the…

The portrait of Dublin people and society is shown subconsciously through a series of Mrs. Mooney’s plan on forcing Mr. Doran’s marriage. The significant points that describe the characteristic of Dublin people and society are the sexual violation and unspeaking sexual story. Sexual activities or anything related to sexual activity cannot be discussed publicly. Additionally, in the eyes of Dublin people, which regard the 10th commandments and mainly are Catholic, having sex before marriage is considered to be a sin. For those who act such an unforgivable manner as a premarital sex might be criticized severely by the people. As we have seen on page 111, Mrs. Mooney believes that social opinion will be on her side. This can confirm that Dublin…

At that moment I thought of her as if she was something unattainable, yet I changed my mind when I knew her closer. She is very sociable, polite and down-to-earth. Moreover having her sensitive nature, she admired me deeply . I will keep firmly in mind the day when she found an alley cat in the street. Mary was about to weep, so helpless it was. That’s why she couldn’t help taking the poor thing home. Apart from being apprehensible she is a girl, who is capable of quite courageous deeds. Her only disadvantage is an excessive naïveness, but nevertheless this is exactly what I like about her.…
