The bus driver for the town of Sam Dent, Dolores Driscoll, seems very nice and caring, but there are definitely many examples throughout the first chapter that show her to be quite goofy. First of all, a lot of the things she says and the phrases that she uses are very out there and do not seem to make a whole lot of sense. In the second paragraph on page eleven Dolores says, “Doreen was a Pomeroy from Lake Placid, a sweet little ding-a-ling of a girl”. On page 31 paragraph two Dolores also says, “...and it scared the bejesus out of me, although I could not for the life of me tell you why”. These two sentences make her seem a little loony because the things she says are so unique, and even I rarely ever her people use those phrases. This is just one example of how the author portrays Dolores to be just a bit nutty.…

The quote ‘It’s only knows things that make you afraid’, said by Elizabeth, affects Matilda the most. Matilda is a sneaky little girl and is known to know the most of secrets. She attempts to keep all the secrets she knows private, “like a spy”. She is also unable to about the sight she wasn’t supposed to see at the Basin, to anyone because of the fragile state everyone is in. Her fear causes her to create an imaginary friend, Floreal 22, which carries her doubts and negative outlooks on everything. He is very arrogant and stubborn and like to contradict everything Matilda says; “ ‘my father’s brave… He was it the war’ “, but then Floreal retorts “ ’The war is over now…he’s not brave, anyway’”. Part of her wants her to forget because she wasn’t supposed to see, nor does she know how to react to this incident “ ‘but I don’t want to remember’ ” .Her fear has the most impact on her because of her age and the way she sees everything and mainly because she doesn’t understand. Since she is just six of age she has the wildest imagination ”the Cowboys and the Red Indians”. Having such imagination, you cannot imagine what Matilda would be thinking about, when her father has a rope tied around his neck, but…

Conflicts at home notably between Mr. and Mrs. Ross become reflected in the general struggle. Robert envies a soldier in who he meets and wishes to leave home due to the private guilt he carries due to his sister Rowena’s death “She fell. It was Sunday. Stuart was meant to be watching her and so it was Stuart's fault but no, it wasn't Stuart's fault. It was Robert's fault. Robert was her guardian and he was locked in his bedroom. Making love to his pillows.” (17). Roberts’s motivation for enlisting in the army is the guilt over his supposed desertion of duty to Rowena; in other words, a very private and personal imperative drives him to participate in a public act of violence. He is then thrown in to an awfully public war where he is left exposed and judgement is waiting. He struggles as he tries to preserve his isolation. Socially awkward especially around girls Robert is set back by the idea of going to the brothel with the other soldier but is inclined to go. Such private acts such as sexual intercourse are now no longer even private as Robert and Barbara are spending time together in the believed to be haunted room of Lady Sorrel. “What I did was worse than blundering… This was a picture that didn't make sense. Two people hurting one another. That's what I thought. I knew in a cool, clear way at the back of my mind that this was 'making love', but the shape of it confused me.” (183) this is how Juliet describes what she seen upon opening Roberts door in hopes of exacting revenge on Barbara by dressing up as the ghost Lady Sorrel although it did not go as planned as she herself is kept awake that night by what she has seen. While Robert is the one who feels most exposed during this scene, both characters reveal more of themselves than they…
