Mr Mloney Questions
Reflection questions:
In the opening paragraph, there is a very peaceful and ordinary scene set by the author.
This scene is set with the description in the paragraph. “Warm and clean” is how the room is described and the drawn curtains implies a relaxed, safe atmosphere. With the soda water, whisky, and ice cubes ready, it is obvious that they were planning to have a very stress-free afternoon. An image of a very sunny day is given because the room is warm and the curtains would not be drawn if there is not a sunny day. Three adjectives that would describe the mood and atmosphere would be relaxed, serene, and ordinary. 2. The time where we get a sense that things are not going as well as usually is when we Mr. Maloney was acting strange. He was not saying much and also drank his whisky in one big gulp, which is unusual. “And as he spoke he did an unusual thing. He lifted his glass and drained it in one

Mr. Maloney was telling his wife about how he wanted to divorce her. This can be inferred as a result of what Mr. Maloney said at the end as well as Mrs. Maloney’s reactions. “Of course I’ll give you money and see you’re looked after” implies that he will be going away from her as he will be sending money for support as well as making sure she’s looked after. “But there needn’t really be any fuss” implies that what will happen may have some conflicts which a divorce would contain. Mrs. Maloney also reacts as if she suffered a large loss which is what a divorce would be. Therefore, Mr. Maloney most probably told her about wanting a divorce. 4. Three adjectives that would describe Mrs. Maloney would be impulsive, deliberate, and persuasive. Mrs. Maloney suddenly murdered her husband without thinking too much about it, which is a very impulsive thing to do. She is also deliberate with her very elaborate scheme to make sure she get caught. Finally she is persuasive as she was able to persuade the detectives to eat the murder

Steinbeck describes the bunk house as a plain, dark, hostile place with “small, square windows”, this creates the impression of a dark, lonely environment. The workers don’t have proper chairs to sit on, using “grouped boxes”, this shows that there is no comfort within the bunkhouse. The workers belongings are kept in an “apple box” which shows little luxury and comfort. This image is the opposite to the image of the brush; a tranquil, safe place. Using words like “he stepped out the door into the brilliant sunshine” creates the image of an oppressive room, somewhere you wouldn’t want to stay; a sense of danger nearby.…

Tension in the household are portrayed immediately at the opening of the play. The household is being described as, “substantial and heavily comfortable by not cozy and homelike” which illustrates that although the Birling family attempted to decorate their residence to a standard that is equivalent to the expectancy of those times with their class, they did not succeed to create a atmosphere suitable for a “homelike” feel . The words “not cozy and homelike” portray a cold, unwelcoming and inhospitable atmosphere, which as you progress through the play, reflects the characters themselves. Thesaurus…

"There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair (261)." The fact that the chair faces a window (and an open window especially) shows a longing to be free; it doesn't mean that she isn't allowed outdoors, but it symbolizes her feelings of being trapped. The chair is roomy and comfortable, this implies that she spends a lot of time at this window, an uncomfortable chair would not be practical or enjoyable.…
