William Somerset Maugham was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author during the 1930s. Maugham's style is clear-cut and elegant. The attitude of the novelist to his character seems mostly to be cynically sarcastic. A play upon contrasts and contradictions lies at the basis of Maugham's sarcastic method in portraying his characters. The author often thought upon the problems of relationship, society, art and traveling.
The story under analysis , «Mr know all» , is about boat trip of the narrator from San Francisco to Yokohama. His neighbor in two –berths cabin is Mr.Kelada, also called Mr know all, because of his behavior .He is very sociable, he tries to please everyone, and to be everywhere, he is sure that always right and tries to prove it. But in happened dispute with Mr. Ramsay about quality of chain of his wife Mrs. Ramsay , Kelada admits that he is wrong , despite he is right in fact ,to save reputation of women.
The text under analysis presents a piece of narration, dialogues and description. Writer apply a lot of dialogues in the text to show how talkative Mr.Kelada is. A lot of things are described in details. The general slant of the story is not homogeneous .
First of all , the name of the text «mr know all» is made with help of antonomasia , the name, which contains description in it.
The main character Mr.Kelada Is described directly and indirectly. The narrator tells us , that he is : «short and of a sturdy build, clean-shaven and dark skinned, with a fleshy, hooked nose and very large lustrous and liquid eyes. His long black hair was sleek and curly » with help of epithets. He mentions with irony : «He spoke with a fluency in which there was nothing English and his gestures were exuberant» . But we can also imagine who is Mr.Kelada according to the description of the things he has : « he was a patron of the excellent Monsieur

    Literary analysis THE STORY Mr. Know- All is a story with a moral lesson. The subject is simple. A rich Britishmerchant of Oriental origin, called Mr. Kelada, meets a group of Westerners on a shipsailing across the Pacific Ocean. His cabin-mate, a British citizen who is the nameless narrator of the story, dislikes Mr. Kelada even before he sees him.
