( LO1: apply communication skills in various situations. ; LO4: analyse information gathered as a means of learning in the process of lifelong learning. )
Community services is the practice of altruism ( unselfishness ) within one's community. People become involved in community service for many reasons: for some, serving community is an altruistic act, for others it is a punishment.

Community services therefore refers to projects that members of certain youth organizations, such as Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, Religions’ (such as Buddhism, Christianity, Islamic and etc) activities, NGO’s activities, the Knights of Columbus, Key Club International, and some high school students perform. It is also an alternative sentencing technique in a justice system. And at times groups of people will commit to perform service to the community as part of the gift economy.

Mandatory Community Research has recently increased in many schools in the advanced countries such as United States. A study was done that correlates community services with academic success; it was found that there is a strong positive association between students who maintain a weekly community services record and their GPA than those that don't at all.

Examples of community services projects include:
Collecting items for charity such as clothes, food, or furniture.
Getting involved with Habitat for Humanity
Cleaning roadside verges.
Helping the elderly in nursing homes service.
Tutoring children with learning disabilities.
Participating in school activities that benefit the wider community.
Others …

Overall, community service is paying back to people and animals that are in need. That is why it is necessary for the people that are able to participate do. Not only should people do it because they have to, they should want to. I have learned this personally through my community service experiences. By participating in community service it has allowed me to change as a person and look at life differently. In the beginning I was not enthusiastic about volunteering, but afterwards it made me feel good about myself. However, according to Sally Brown, volunteering brings these groups together and unites communities through bonding and “mutual understanding” (qtd. in Dykhuis 16). In fact, Pappas states that many youth volunteers get started in service work through church or school. Consequently, these closely knit programs encourage friendship and address areas of each community’s concern (Dykhuis 16). This allows communities to come together through a similar cause whether that be “illiteracy, teen pregnancy, high crime rates, or drug abuse” (Spiegel and Safrit 14). Due to the different opportunities for community service, volunteers are able to understand the barriers between affluent and limited resource areas and use their knowledge of these barriers for further personal and communal…

Standardized tests, grade point average and community service involvement should all be considered when lowering cost of education as time passes for students. With some students not being good test-takers, the productivity of a student should be able to be determined by using that student’s GPA. Other methods of measuring academic success, for students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia or dysgraphia, can be used to aid these students as well. Community involvement can be whatever the school board deems necessary when dealing with the needs of its citizens. This could be anything from charity drives to helping feed the…
