It seems like just yesterday Mom was telling me to pack my bags. We were living in a small farming town just outside Catarina, Mexico. Times were really tough and Dad had lost his job. My family knew of people moving to the United States for work, but my family never considered it. Our entire family resides in Mexico; the thought of moving was unbearable.

When we crossed the United States border into Texas, things seemed surreal. It did not feel like this was really happening. I remember staring at the road behind us, watching everything I knew disappear. We only stopped a few times on the drive. We did not eat at any restaurants; we ate chicken tacos Mom cooked at the rest stops. It took us almost two whole days.

We arrived in a town in Illinois called Rantoul. Dad said the business he was now working for found a place for us to live. We pulled into a parking spot in front of the apartment building. I got out of the car and looked around. Fancy condos and townhomes stood across the street. I turned and looked at where my family and I would be living. The building seemed dark and dingy. At least the lawn looked like it was taken care of.

When Dad opened the door to the building, I smelt the familiar scents from home. I could not help but smile. The hallways were painted in bright yellows, reds, greens, and purples. I was so happy to see we had our own little community in the building. Everyone greeted us and introduced themselves. I was pleased to meet several teenagers my age in which I could interact with. They said they have lived there for several years and enjoy the town.

I found out Dad had a job at a pork processing plant. He cuts the meat for packaging. I was really excited to hear that he would be getting a steady paycheck every week. Mom has also applied for work. She has applied at several places in town, and is very optimistic of the

I could see the intricate designs of grapevines that had been masterfully carved into the light oak posts that held the entryway above my head. Through a miniature window on the far side of the room, I could get a slight glance of the steaming pasta noodles that had been drenched in luscious red spaghetti sauce, before the waitress guided us to our seats. I could feel anticipation building up as the waitress guided us to one of the most well placed tables in the whole restaurant. The light brown, cloth drapes that rested against the smooth brick wall of the restaurant grazed my arm as I passed under one of the exits outside. As soon as the fresh air whipped my face, the noticeable scent of fresh chocolate mousse cake assaulted my nose. I could feel the soft, plush cushioning that rested underneath my backside as I sat down to great relief. My eyes scanned my surroundings, taking in all the sights and smells that I could contain within myself without being overwhelmed. Of all the places to be right then, Charleston was the one. I had experienced the smell of chocolate, the taste of lasagna, the sound of the ocean, the sight of warm, crisp sand, and the feeling of being happy and glad for what I…

We departed from my hometown (Montecristi) to Santo Domingo on April 12, 1993 at 7:00 a.m. I went by and got there four hours later. In the airport, we went to the American Airlines counter and checked in for my daughter and me. We went through security. It was really empty because it was very early. After that we went to our gate. We walked around the airport and took a seat to wait for a while. I took my daughter to a cafeteria to eat some food and a soda. We were very early so we had time to walk. Two hours later, we went back to the gate to board the plane. I am sure that my daughter had no idea what was going on, and luckily she was a very quiet child, so I was not nervous.…

The sky was really grey and it was about five in the morning no one was up and it was bitter cold, it was a sudden change from the harsh humidity weather I lived in. We drove past many old victorian houses that was surrounded by trees, grass and weeds. Awe-inspiring. Very different from Hawaii, I was used to buildings after buildings. Canada, unlike Hawaii had beautiful trees and houses; I could stare at them forever. It had been about a year since Ive been on trip, especially since the last trip I was alone with my mother, this time my brother and his girlfriend decide to come with us .…

Tradition is existing knowledge. A tradition is a group of related ideas that have lasted for a long time. In some cases people have spent that time trying to improve the ideas. We'll call that a dynamic tradition because it changes over time. In other cases, the focus has been on keeping the tradition exactly the same over time. We'll call that a static tradition because it does not change. Although these approaches are contradictory, some traditions are mixed.…

I took a risk when I decided to come in the United States, and there is no doubt that this decision has been the biggest choice I had to make in my life so far.…

People move to an other country for many reasons: to escape from their exausting routine, a career change, health purpose, but for me it was as part of an University exchange. I’m a moroccan student who live in South Korea since August 2012, and I was suprised of some aspects of this country. I had some experiences that bring me to ask myself new questions and even let me confused sometimes. In fact, there are three things that impressed me most: their similarities, their deceptively quiet nature (which create some misunderstanding) and respect according to their own codes.…

That Monday morning, I woke up late and stumbled out of bed, threw on some clothes and was out the door with no time for breakfast. I will never forget that car ride down to Carpinteria, and the anxious feelings I felt in my stomach. My mind was racing in a million different directions and I really had no idea what I was in for. Pulling up to the warehouse, I remember the cold wind blowing across my face, the distinct smell of ocean heavy in the air, and the flapping of the State Park flags in the distance.…

The flight was nine hours long. I was tired when we arrived in the airport in San Diego, California. We took our suitcases and left the airplane. I saw some people waving to us, I knew immediately that they were from my family. It was one of the best parts of the holiday. I had never met them before, so I was a little bit shy in the beginning, but I overcame the feeling, after we arrived at their home. The first day we relaxed because we were tired. The next day we went to museums and took a lot of pictures. There was a guide, who told us everything about the tings in the museums. It was instructive. I love to be at museums, that is the best thing I know. Some days after we went to the beach. It was a huge beach with thousands of people. There were people from Denmark, Germany and many other countries. It was the most beautiful beach I ever had seen. Our stay in San Diego was about 15 days long, and then we had plans to see our family in Michigan, Detroit. We bought some tickets and flew to Michigan.…

Aunty Sara carried me to Venezuela when I was nine years old. That was my first vacation out of Chicago and the first time I flew on a plane. We stayed in a hotel named “El Caribe” in the city of Caracas and our first day in that country we had breakfast at a small restaurant located just a short distance away from the hotel. I remember like it was yesterday. We had tacos, with sweet sauce and I had a large glass of orange juice and Aunty Sara had coffee with two milks and one sugar just the way she liked it. After breakfast we went shopping. To me it felt like we walked the whole of Venezuela and some. My feet hurt but I had so much fun it really didn’t matter. I ate so much sweets that day that my stomach hurt and my teeth edged. Every stop we made there were these little carts with little short men selling sweet ice or flavored ice shavings. I specifically remembered watching my Aunt with awe and admiration when she rattled Spanish fluently when she asked for something or purchased an item. Then we would move on to another village like area and shop again. After shopping we had lunch and dinner in one, because we spent most of that day running around buying clothes, shoes, etc. We ate at the same little restaurant. This time the atmosphere was different. I remember soft Spanish music playing on a radio, lighted candles flickering around the restaurant and my aunt dancing with a…

The next week, my parents took us to see our new house. It looked perfect for my family, but it did not feel like what I call a "home." It was empty and dark. The night before we moved, I sat up for a long time thinking about new friends, classrooms, teachers, and sports teams. I looked around. Blank white walls stared back at me. Boxes were stacked from floor to ceiling. Although things were a mess, I still felt connected to this place. My father knocked on my door, and came in.…
