Moving Home Narrative
The door shut with a bang. I looked outside my blurred window, and watched the droplets of rain, dance through the sky and on to the ground. I glanced at my phone it was 11:00 pm. I looked out my window again, and I saw it. What we drove 12 hours for. Our new house, for a while. I climbed out of the moving truck, and started helping my parents and siblings unload the truck. It took us 4 hours to get everything out. It was night, and the house was empty, it looked like no soul had lurked here for a while. Since we got here so late there was no beds. So we had to sleep on the cold hardwood floor with pillows and blankets. Sounds like the perfect day ever right, moving away from somewhere you have lived since kindergarten, to half way across the country. Having to ride in a car for 12 hours then unload a moving truck for 4 hours. Then having to sleep on the hardwood floor. The most perfect day. You’re probably wondering how I got myself here, I’ll tell you.

“He got the job. We’re going to be moving to Missouri.” My mom said excitedly. It felt like the whole world just stopped. I felt nauseous, like I was falling off a cliff, like I was in a dark cave with no way out. I felt like my world had just ended.

“What do you mean he got the job, Mom?” I asked stuttering.

“The place in Kansas City, Missouri that interviewed him, hired him, and they’re are the only ones to give him a job. So, we’re moving to Missouri.” She said like it was so obvious.

The next day I walked into school depressed, and I didn’t try to hide the emotion on my face. It wasn’t until I walked into my Mrs. Nicholson’s room that I told my friends what was happening. Shock, confusion, and depression showed up on their faces, and they looked like I just slapped them.

“What do you mean you’re moving?” Karlee worriedly asked.

“My dad got a job in Missouri. So, we have to move there.” I said like it was no big deal, but it was a big

We were on our way to Canobie Lake Park. It had been a long two hours, but my dad was playing comedian albums from his phone, so we were preoccupied. “Are we almost there?” my brother asked. “No, were not stop asking.” Little brothers can be so annoying with their questions. We were almost there just five minutes to go. The view was so gorgeous. The lake was glistening from the sun. I had been to focused on the view and before I knew it we were at the…

I entered into the new house, it was so empty. I could feel the weight in the air. The cold, frightening new air. I walked over to what is now my parents room, I rolled the sleeping bag onto the carpet, and slept on the floor. Something felt strange, I was sleeping on carpet. Never before had I fallen asleep on carpet. Always on hardwood floor. I recall falling asleep in sorrow, trying to grasp a little bit of hope out of myself. I tried to see the best in the situation, but all I could think about was the people I just left, all I could think about was the past. I couldn’t bring myself to the present. My mind and heart still in Ecuador, my cold body here. This was probably one of the worst moments of my life. I don’t think I have ever cried so much. I don’t think that I’ve ever felt so isolated. I didn’t know who I was. Everything that made me had the reset button pushed on it. All of my pride and courage felt lost. I felt so weak. I needed to become someone new.…

We drove in a bright emerald minivan who was older than America. The seats were a gray-blue color, the color of a stormy sea. The cup holders were half broken and the windows were covered in tiny sticky fingerprints. The sun beat down in hot and stifling waves. All the liquid in the car was near boiling and crayons were melting into the seats. The air conditioning was a blessing on my skin. When we first arrived, we stayed in a Best Western hotel by the river that made really good cheesy omelets. After two weeks, we rented a dull, brown house in a neighborhood near where I live now. It had thick fluffy jade colored carpet in the basement, petite bedrooms, an overrun backyard, and a painfully small…

I didn't grow up in the most conventional household. My parents both worked and we consistently had babysitters and nannies taking care of us most of my childhood. My mom was the “breadwinner” she had always made significantly more than my dad and there was really no reason for my dad to work in the first place, he really just did it because he loved it. As my 4 brothers and I got older it got progressively harder on my parents being away from home so much. When a job opportunity with less hours and a sizable amount of money came to my mom she was quick to consider it. She eventually made her decision, consulting my dad very little, she made the decision to move across the country to a place we all had never been to.…

It was a cloudy summer day and I was going to camp. I can remember my Mom forcing me out of the vehicle to meet other kids with the same look on their faces that I had. We were all being loaded up onto the bus and my thoughts of the future events were as negative as they could be. After the hours of driving, the destination was right beyond my eyes. A glistening circular lake with unkempt looking cabins was among us. In the little amount of time acquaintances were made, with one being Dawson. He was a bright thirteen year old boy with the height of a grown man. I never predicted what I would learn about him through our days before we would departure. In the months before camp, Dawson had a brother named Wyatt. Wyatt was fifteen. The two brother’s…

I’ve never realized how much stuff I had until I forced into a box; unfortunately, this didn’t stop from forcing as much as possible into bags, boxes, or luggage. Overall I packed almost my entire room. There’d be no room in my car for the mattress so it looks like the back seat will be my bed for the foreseeable future.…

Everything was loud. The overstuffed bus of children was leaving the school parking lot for its normal route of sudden stops, unforgiving bumps, and of course, transporting students to their destinations. Opposite from every other child on the bus, I sit quietly in seat fourteen listening to the screaming laughter and shrill excitement of the conclusion of another school year. I sit there in silence because I knew that it would be my last bus ride home. I was trying to take everything in: the smell of the old brown bus seats, the half opened windows that tried to keep us cool, the pleasantly plump and incredibly sweet bus driver, and the jovial and rambunctious sounds of kids cackling and yelping. At every stop, I could literally feel my heart drop a little. As the bus neared my neighborhood, my mouth was completely dry. When I saw my house, my heart stopped. There was the moving truck. It was symbol of my leaving home, and the realization that the move was going to happen, and that I had no control over it.…
