The Hunger Games With the grossing of 691 million worldwide, The Hunger Games has become one of the most popular movies of 2012. This science fiction adventure film is an adaption of the best-selling novel written by Suzanne Collins. Directed by Gary Ross, the movie’s opening weekend gross of $152.2 million has become the third highest grossing film in the United States. Actors Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss), Josh Hutcherson (Peeta), Liam Hemsworth (Gale), Elizabeth Banks (Effie), and Woody Harrelson (Haymitch) are just a few who star in this popular film. Overall, the film has received positive reviews for its acting, writing, music and visual style. The story takes place in a dystopian nation called Panem. Panem consists of a wealthy Capitol and 12 districts. Each district has a niche and provides something for the rest of the nation. Its totalitarian government requires one girl and one boy from each district to take part in The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games are a televised event where tributes, children randomly chosen, are forced to fight to the death until one remains and crowned the victor. The Games started decades ago when a civil war broke out called “the rebellion”. As a reminder of their defeat, the Capitol holds the Hunger Games every year. The movie revolves around Katniss and her journey as a tribute in the 74th annual Hunger Games.
