mountain lion
Why is the Mountain Lion such an important animal?
Mountain lions, also known as cougars, panthers, or pumas, are highly efficient predators. These cats have a wide range throughout the Western states, and populations are increasing. An individual cat's range depends on food availability. Thus, a range can vary from 10 to 370 square miles. Male lions weigh up to 165 pounds and grow to more than eight feet in length. Females weigh about 100 pounds. Female lions generally first reproduce at about two and one half years of age.
The first part of a mountain lion’s life is its kit phase. The female mountain lion will usually give birth to an average of two to three young, called kittens in a very secluded place where there is little to no interaction with other dangerous animals. Newly born kittens are about one foot long, weigh one pound with blackish-brown spots around their body. They start to peek out of the den as their eyes open after three weeks while the female is on hunting for food. They become fully aware and playful after their eyes are opened. They are generally dependent on their mother for the milk.
Mountain Lions are solitary and very powerful animals. The mountain lion is only found in the western hemisphere and resides around the Americas. Colorado is prime residence for most of the mountain lions. The Mountain Lion is a mammal of the family, Felidae and it is also native to the Americas. A mountain lion's lifespan is estimated at 12 years in the wild, although cats have lived up to 25 years in captivity. Mountain lions are solitary animals. They tend to live in remote country and are seldom seen by humans. They hunt their prey by stealth and ambush. Their method of killing is usually with a powerful bite at the base of the skull, breaking the neck. The mountain lion, like the domestic cat with a mouse, will kill for the sake of killing. A lion may kill many more animals in an attack than it can possibly consume. Lions have killed as many as twenty

They are solitary hunters, cougars depend on certain traits to stalk and ambush their prey. Their keen senses, muscular body and adaptability make it well-matched as a predator. Cougars have large paws and have the largest proportional hind legs in the cat family. This structure allows the cougar to leap great heights and sprint short distances. Their fast, and very skilled; although lions are the ‘King of the jungle’ the cheetah, is more fitted to catch their prey. Of course, nearly all big cats hide in the tall grass (if you’re picturing them in the Savannah) they wait for their prey, patiently. The one thing that help the big cats’ survival skill are their patience. Since, big cats have big appetites, they wait among a large crowd of deer, buffalos, etc. When their prey isn’t aware (know that when the big cat approaches, their prey will notice, but then settles when can’t see the big cat) the big cat strikes and attacks. Honestly, I think that this move is most advantageous, considering they must literally chase them down. For the type of animals they are, I think it’s method of hunting is great, because it’s a large crowd of animals, so when one section hears and walks away, there’s always another section…
