Motor Vehicle Safety Scenarios
I am writing to discuss my recommendations about the unintentional deaths and injury that are a prevalent problem within the United States. I believe that this is a public health issue and it is our moral obligation to seek change. As reported by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unintentional injuries or accidents is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Focusing specifically on one age group, unintentional deaths by motor vehicles is the leading cause of deaths for individuals between the ages of fifteen to twenty-four in 2010. South Carolina needs to make serious changes in order to reverse this extremely important public health issue.

Legislators in South Carolina are being as proactive towards this public health issue as they ought to be. South Carolina made minor strides towards change in 2014 when the texting-ban was finally put in place. The law states, “it is unlawful for a person to use a wireless electronic communication device to compose, send, or read a text-based communication while operating a motor vehicle on the public streets and highways of this State.” Furthermore, if a driver is caught using their phone they will receive a twenty-five dollar fine and no record will be made on their license. This is the second lowest fine in the United States for texting and driving. The department of Public Safety of Alaska stated that if a driver is caught texting they could face a fine up to ten thousand dollars, a year in prison, and be tried for a felony. Unintentional death and injuries by motor vehicles is a public health problem. Many young adults like myself are ignorant to the fact that getting behind the wheel is a very high-risk activity. We must take preventative measures such as placing a higher importance on life saving technology and creating harsher laws in order to save lives. I look forward to hearing from you.     The number of people who have been affected by texting and driving is dramatically increasing. Clearly the laws, punishments, and education up to this point have not done much to change how people view texting and driving. Due to the facts that have been revealed about texting and driving, it is imperative that the government takes strong action to fight this rising epidemic. Although it may be near impossible to keep people off their phones, it is vital that stricter laws are put against it. Law enforcement, including police and the judicial system must put their foot down and stand by it. All ages must be targeted as well. Even though older people may think they are more experienced behind the wheel, accidents can happen and they should not be able to use their phones either. It should also no longer be a question whether it is a safe time to pick up the phone and send a quick text. License suspension would be a strong preventive in order for people to keep both hands on the wheel. On top of the new laws that should be put against texting while driving, drawing attention and focus to people who have suffered tragedies from texting and driving could be a key part to prevent more from happening. Making sure people are fully educated, enforcing stronger laws, and following through with stricter punishments are the first things that need to be done in order to keep people off their phones.     In 2007, the latest year for which data are available, motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of death among 13-19 year-old males and females in the United States. A total of 3,466 teenagers ages 13-19 died in motor vehicle crashes in 2009. This is 60 percent fewer than in 1975 and 15 percent fewer than in 2008. Thirty-three percent of deaths among 13-19-year-olds occurred in motor vehicle crashes, 39 percent among females and 31 percent among males. 16-year-olds have higher crash rates than drivers of any other age. The crash rate per mile driven is twice as high for 16-year-olds as it is for 18- and 19-year-olds. About 2 out of every 3 teenagers killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2009 were males. Sixty percent of teenage passenger deaths in 2009 occurred in vehicles driven by another teenager. Among deaths of passengers of all ages, 18 percent occurred when a teenager was driving. Statistics show that 16- and 17-year-old driver death rates increase with each additional passenger. Eighty-three percent of teenage motor vehicle crash deaths in 2009 were passenger vehicle occupants. The others were pedestrians (7 percent), motorcyclists (4 percent), bicyclists (2 percent), riders of all-terrain vehicles (2 percent), and people in other kinds of vehicles (2 percent). Fifty-five percent of motor vehicle crash deaths among teenagers in 2009 occurred on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. In states with GDL programs that include at least five of the most important elements, there was a 20% reduction in fatal crashes involving 16-year-old drivers.
